Velocity. Benoit and Regal were both moved ("moved back" in Benoit's case) to Smackdown earlier this summer.

I agree. I've actually remembered seeing RESTHOLDS in CRUISERWEIGHT matches in WWE over the past few years, in addition to some shitty brawling. Now, this will become even more noticeable, which is a damn shame considering how good wrestlers like Jamie Noble, Paul London, Spanky (as of this year from what I read about his 2005 ROH work, it's even better now), etc. really are.

The piledriver that Owen did was a frontal piledriver that is much, much harder to do correctly, than an inverted piledriver like the one Bret Hart and Jerry Lawler used to do. I don't think anyone has been injured taking an inverted pildriver.

Actually, I think the inverted piledriver is the proper name for the version Owen used, and Bret/Jerry's one is the regular one.

 

Unless there's some difference stemming in Japan. But they call a vertical suplex a "brainbuster" so screw 'em.

 

And even the inverted (or belly-to-belly sitdown piledriver, whatever) ones are relatively safe used by larger wrestlers. Rikishi and Bam Bam's big fat thighs make for great padding, but Kish had to stop using his anyway.

I think Benoit might have given a Dragon Suplex to Angle in the Wrestlemania 2000 Triple Threat Double Title match with Jericho in it and accidentally injured Angle's neck a little from what I read a while back.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me laugh whenever people get excited about some news tidbit that the WWE is building up its cruiserweight division. No matter what is said, the audience is going to get cruiserweights working like heavyweights, matches that don't go above ten minutes, and nothing over ***.

After seeing that posted, I now know that the last time Benoit used the Dragon Suplex as a part of his regular moveset in WWE was at No Way Out 2001 in the Fatal 4 Way match. It was then not seen anymore from Benoit until Velocity this year against Regal.

 

BTW, I started having low expectations for WWE Cruiserweight matches when The Hurricane and Jamie Noble wrestled a WWE-style match at KOTR 2002. Their Velocity match then turned out to be ironically better than their KOTR match with Hurricane actually doing high-risk moves.

I'm with the rest of you guys now. Whats the purpose of having a cruiserweight division if you cut off all the flashy moves? I guess now the smaller guys will have to rely on their mat wrestling skills to win themselves over with the crowd. There can still be technical cruiserweights like Noble and Nunzio that try to ground the high-flyers by working over body parts until they make a comeback later in the match with the high spots while selling the injuries. That's fine with me if a match like that comes about once in a while, because it worked for the Malenko/Mysterio match back in WCW.

 

What the Cruiserweight division SHOULDN'T be, however, is a match that reminds me of Batista vs. JBL or Batista vs. HHH matches with crappy brawling, restholds, slow movement, stalling, etc.

Hopefully, though, TNA can take advantage of this in October with the X-Division.

London (as well as Hardcore MF'n Holly of course) are the only reasons why I bother to record Velocity on Saturday nights and watch Smackdown. I have never seen London fuck up the 450 splash at all. Why ban the guy from using a finisher that he has been able to perform perfectly? They give the guy the Cruiserweight Championship, obviously because they felt confident in him. Just because Juventurd went and fucked up the move, London is banned from using it? Makes no sense, but of course, with this being WWE, who the fuck is surprised.

Recent neck injuries in the WWE (to give an example) consists of Rhyno & Edge being hurt, then why didn't they ban the SPEAR/GORE ? For this move you basicly dive neck first into the stomack of your opponent !!

A lot, actually. Amazing Red was out for a long while with injuries and hasn't really been the same since he came back, Sonjay Dutt was hurt for a while, there was that whole thing with Jack Evans having a close call not too long ago, Daniels has had nagging shoulder problems for a while now, and that's just off the top of my head.

 

Lately, TNA's X Division has toned down the highspots compared to the PPV only days, and there are more ground-based wrestlers, like Petey Williams and Samoa Joe. ROH scramble style matches tend to have a lot of outside dives, which are generally less likely to hurt either the guys receiving it or the guy doing it.

Vince McMahon has sent word down through WWE that he wants cruiserweights to tone down several risky high flying moves, unofficially banning maneuvers such as the 450 splash and the shooting star press.

 

Apparently the number of injuries has caused McMahon to decide that high flying risky maneuvers are simply not worth it. The unofficial ban actually went into effect around two weeks ago and when Paul London used the shooting star press against Nunzio on a recent edition of Velocity, he was told by company officials not to use it again and to come up with a different finisher.

 

London along with other WWE cruiserweights are upset about having to tone down their style. Many in the industry are comparing this unofficial ban to the ban of the tombstone piledriver where WWE officials only let the Undertaker and Kane use it in dramatic situations.

And Kane's version of the tomebstone is very poorly executed, and nowadays, given UT limited schedule, every match is a 'dramatic situation' for him.

Flying axhandle

Flying clothesline

 

Naturally, cruisers won't be able to do the first two moves, though, becuase they're trademarks of HBK.

Well, that's a subjective opinion.

 

Toning down highspots doesn't mean that they can't do them anymore. If anything, I'd find it more interesting and "special" if they saved high risk spots for certain occaisions. After seeing a frigging highspot a hundred matches in a row, it kind of loses its lustre.

He was using the Dragon Suplex earlier this year right after he became "Futuristic Caveman Jimmy Jacobs rip-off" Paul London in a Cruiserweight Elimination match on a Smackdown PPV.

 

The sad thing is it'll be rare to see anymore in WWE with Vince being so cautious about high-risk moves getting wrestlers "injured often" now. Of course, Vince toned down head-dropping moves a while back, which is why I only saw Chris Benoit using a Dragon Suplex against Regal on Velocity not too long ago, but within the past few years, Benoit hadn't even used it.

And this is one of the reasons why I won't give their programming the time of day...everyone wrestles the same match. It's like an SNES game...all the guys do the same stuff with one finisher and maybe 2-3 signature moves. Their little main event style = no more variety. As such, count me in as another who says Impact can't show up on Spike soon enough. If Jeff Jarrett is the only thing I have to put up with, then it's already miles ahead of WWE's situation.
