Does that make Al Jolsen in black face a tribute to African American culture?

MAMMY~!

Here is a follow up article on the situation. Florida State is none too happy with the situation

If it's of any relevancy, Native American golfer Notah Begay III has said names like Seminoles, Braves and Warriors didn't bother him, and while he doesn't like cacicatures like the Cleveland Indians logo, it wasn't offensive.

Redskins, however, he says, is as bad as the n word.

Yeah, there is a line. like when the white guy is painted red and rides the horse and shit.. Thats just offensive. Of course, it would be hard to repremand that example and not say anything to the rest of the Indian mascot having schools. I think this is an example of to punish the worst of them, the not so offensive ones are being punished too. They are just caught in the crossfire.

I'm guessing you mean Chief Osceola of FSU, in which case you do know that the Seminole nation provided authentic tribal gear for the outfit... right?

No I mean when white guys dress in red paint. You know, he isn't the only one right?

And another thing, about being offensive.

You know, there is a black person out there somewhere that you could walk up to in black face, talking "street" while eating watermelon and fried chicken and he won't be offended. That doesn't mean the shit isn't offensive because someone of that race thought it was okay. I get so tired of hearing people say "its not offensive to jews, because Joe, he is Jewish and he didn't find it offensive."

I've been desensitized to this kind of nonsense ever since the malcontents reduced Syracuse to a color.

Why is it they became the Orange?

Because some people thought they were referring to Native Americans by the term "Orangemen", when in fact Orangemen refers to Protestants in Ireland, who might have had a hand in founding the school...

People down here are fucking livid at this. FSU has hired a lawyer and even gotten the governor on their side. This will be a war.

Like it takes much to get the governor of Florida involved.

Honestly, I am not sure if FSU has any legal standing. The NCAA is ultimately a private institution, and they have the right to decide what is allowed at their events. If FSU does not like it, they have the option to split from the NCAA.

That's what a lot of people are suggesting that they do if the NCAA doesn't drop the charge. And the news broke down here this morning that the Seminole Indians in Oklahoma, who apparently had the big problem with FSU using the name (according the NCAA) have said that they have no issue with Seminoles being used by FSU. I'd love for it to come out that the NCAA went with this without consulting the Oklahoma Seminoles.

I thought it was so they could be gender-neutral

That's the official, on-the-record reason. They wanted to brand all their sports teams, men's and women's, the same way.

A uniquw way to look at this controversy is that with the University of North Dakota logo, the university contacted a Native American artist to design the new logo.

The first logo was used in the 1980's. the second logo is the one currently in use.

Igonre the last logo, it is not important.

The first one looks like a gas station logo. The second is more interesting, and the trend with sports logos lately is multi-layered, textured designs.

Does anyone really find those logos offensive? I just have trouble find those threating and hurtful.

I suppose it could be argued that the logo is still offensive, since the artist that designed the second one was a Chippewa Indian instead of a Sioux Indian.
