Wal-mart's next move in controling

Wal-mart annonced they signed Garth Brooks to an exlusive deal that would make wal-mart the only retailer that can sell his CD's.

 

The idea is Wal-mart is #1 in selling CD's so Wal-mart is going to start saying "Sign an exclusive deal with us or watch your sales drop"

 

This can backfire of course on the Wal-mart Dynasty.

So...Garth Brooks signed a deal that would significantly damage his CD sales? Even if Wal-Mart is the largest seller of CDs, there's absolutely no way sales will even approach his previous levels with every other retailer in the world unable to sell it.

 

Pretty sure this trend will end when Brooks' newest album tanks.

After two and a half years in Walmart Electronics, I honestly can't recall a time when someone bought a Garth Brooks CD from me, and I work in a hick town.

Maybe thats because he hasn't put out a new CD in about 5 years.

 

Uh..I only know that cause my mother was a big fan of him and I used to have to buy her his new CDs as gifts, and I haven't bought one in a while.

"What is the world's largest seller of CDs?" has been asked at bar trivia twice in the past couple months for some reason. It's Wally World.

Probably because there's more Walmarts than just about any other CD-selling store. If the stats were kept by "CD sold per store" I doubt that Walmart would finish first. But since there's so fucking many of them, they can sell less per store and still sell a ton of discs.

 

EDIT: I miss Bar Trivia. I haven't done it since the spring ... maybe this Sunday I'll head into the city and play.

Unless they threw mountains of money at the guy up front I don't see the benifit in this for him. But then after his Chris Gaines gimmick tanked I don't see the benifit on having an exclusive on him.

You know the only Garth Brooks song I liked (I feel ashamed for admitting I liked Garth Brooks songs) are The Dance and the first single he released as Chris Gaines. There I said it! I did hate it when "Chris Gaines" did the remake of that 60's song "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together and try to love one another". I hate the original in the first place, but he butchered it even more.

Ok get this. 25% of RIAA sales in America are sold through Wal-Mart; a quarter of the music industry is controlled by one store. Moreover, cd sales account for well less than 1% of Wal-Mart's total sales. This means that Wal-Mart could have pretty complete control over the music industy (like they do with most of the other companies who sell through them). They could completely bail out of the music selling business at a very small cost to themselves while crippling the music industry.

I pretty much buy all of my music at Best Buy since I work there and get a discount. Otherwise, I've been known to buy stuff at Pitchfork Records, which is a privately owned shop in Concord, NH.

Basically, yes, Garth signed for a very large sum to have his records carried only by Wal-Mart until about 2010, or something.

 

He said something like "I don't plan on putting out a new record until 2010, anyway, so this basically just affects by back catalog."

Newbury pwns most record stores. They're far and away the best 'chain' store. I do most of my shopping either at a Newbury Comics or one of a few mom-n-pop stores in Boston or NH that have good vinyl collections.

 

Wal-Mart doesn't sell the music that I buy.

the last CD I bought at Wal-Mart was Let's Face It by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and that was back in 1997.

 

I did buy cassettes there two or three years ago when they were phasing them out. Mostly because they were like $2.99 and there was some good stuff in there.
