JAPANESE LEGEND SET FOR TNA DEBUT

by Mike Johnson @ 8:00:00 PM on 9/6/2005

PWInsider.com has confirmed with sources in Japan that Japanese legend Jushin "Thunder" Liger will be making his TNA debut at the 10/23 Bound for Glory PPV in Orlando, Florida at Universal Studios.

It would be Liger's first appearance on PPV in the United States since WCW's Starrcade '96, where he pinned Rey Misterio, Jr, although he made later appearances on WCW television. There is no word on who Liger will be facing yet although Christopher Daniels, AJ Styles, and Samoa Joe seem to be the most likely candidates.

Considered one of the greatest Junior Heavyweight wrestlers in history, Liger is a former IWGP Junior Heavyweight and WCW Light Heavyweight champion. He helped break ground for the high flying style that is associated with most Cruiserweights with a historic series of bouts with the late Brian Pillman in 1991 and 1992.

I don't think you can go wrong with any combo of Liger/Joe/AJ/Daniels unless they were to do a 4 way, which I know they aren't dumb enough to do.

Liger coming in for BFG is nothing but positive. I'd like it if this could lead to more international guys coming in, even if it's not on a permanent basis. International guys coming in just helps make the product look more important and not as bush league.

The other guy I'm dying to see come in is Mistico from CMLL. That guy could come in and be a star from Day One if they brought him in.

As discussed in the other thread...

barring something stupid it's either Joe/Daniels and Styles/Liger or Joe/Styles and Daniels/Liger.

Cool beans.

I'm not up on my puro - has Liger wrestled either Daniels or Styles in the past?

Not Styles.

Daniels and Liger looks like more of a possibility than Liger/Styles since Daniels and Liger both wrestle for New Japan while Styles does shows for "rival" Zero-1MAX.

Anyone think this could possibly begin a trade deal with a Japanese company like what WCW had going with NJPW in the 90's?

According to a buddy of mine in Japan, this is looking like it might be the case. There have been rumblings about Simon Inoki wanting to reach an agreement with TNA for a couple months now. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the start of something between the two companies.

Yuji Nagata or Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Samoa Joe

Make it happen, Simon.

I agree that a Daniels match would make more sense. Not only is it a clear face/heel match...but Daniels claim to be the best X worker in the world makes it make sense. Hell...I'd have Liger win the friggin thing and then lose it at the tapings two days later (One would hope they'd be able to use him for those as well. Liger on Spike...happy times)

Christopher Daniels can't lose the title only to win it back the next week.

Daniels/Liger is best choice and most logical decision to make where Daniels must go over.

Mistico would be awesome for TNA, Ultimo Guerrero would be awesome as well.

Stupid question...not having seen Liger wrestle since his embarassing final run in WCW where Juvi beat him with a tequila bottle...can Liger still go in the ring? I'm sure he doesn't do all the high flying stuff he used to do, but is he still pretty good in the ring? Has his style changed much, etc?

Liger can still go, just not as a flyer. He works a bit smarter and paces himself better. Spot fans won't like him much now, but he has credibility, he's still got a unique look, and he'll get over just fine.

The one thing they better not change is his theme music.

Apparently Konnan has recommended Mistico and is working on getting him into TNA. He's also brought up Homicide to them, so if both (or either) wind up in TNA, we can thank K-Dogg.

Both Mistico and Homicide are welcome additions, especially Mistico. Even if Mistico isn't available on a full time basis, he's worth it. Trust me on this. He's the best high flying wrestler in the world right now, bar none. Can't really say much more about Homicide that hasn't already been said.

Someone just brought up Yuji Nagata.

I found Nagata to be one of the top 10 most awful wrestlers in WCW history. Ever. I HATE HIM. Even Kurasawa was below him on the "random mid-card Japanese workers who bore me" list.

I know the Japan marks pimp him. Did he suddenly get good in the 2000s?

He needs to be the booking agent NOW.

Say what you want for Konnan as a person but he clearly has an eye for talent and what would work.

Yes UTSU, he got way better since his very lame WCW run.

He is a smarter worker and paces himself way better. He was just getting out of Young Lion status when he came to WCW. He understands things like fire and selling. He really took off after he won G-1 in 2001 and he's been one of the better IWGP champions in the last 5 years, although they screwed up by having him fight in shoots and getting killed, which hurt his drawing power immensely.

Yes he can go judging by my only expierence with Liger since that atrocious period. He had a great set of matches last fall in ROH and I'm certain he and Daniels or Styles would put on another gem.

Anyone else hate Liger's kicks like I do?

Personal feelings on Liger:

Would have revolutionalized American wrestling in early 90s if they actually kept him booked in the states. Amazing little short stints in WCW.

Today though, just another older cruiser. Though I bet Jerrel Clarke would sell the PALM STRIKE~! by doing a 1260 over the top rope.

He's more than just another older cruiser. He can't bump like AJ but he's still a far smarter worker. Dragon/Liger was better than any Dragon/Styles. He'll have a very good match with whoever they pair him with.

Even Kurasawa/Manabu Nakanishi isn't all that bad. The problem he and Nagata had in WCW is that WCW had the mentality that all Japanese wrestlers are reincarnations of Bruce Lee. They had Nanakishi doing nothing but kicks, when kicks were the one thing he did worst of all.

As far as Nagata goes, it's both like Dangerous A said and Nagata working free of the constraints of WCW.

I'll give credit to TNA, ever since they wen't to the PPV shows again TNA has been on a role with everything. They've been having awesome matches, bringing in great talent and also big names. If TNA can keep on this path when they get back on TV, it'll work wonders for them.
