Since when has having ties to hollywood ever prevented any film makers from leaning to heavily to one direction? Ok, maybe not to the right, but I don't see anyone attempting to stifle the creative visions of nutjobs like Michale Moore and Oliver Stone.

Eh you have a point, although Moore did get dropped initially, and picked up by a smaller company, and it opened in select theaters before going wide due to the arthouses getting bigger capacities then they could handle.

There have been plenty of right-wing films, such as these classics.

Those are action films. I don't think anyone would consider those to be great political statements. But you were probably being sarcastic weren't you?

Red Dawn is just as conservative as The Day After Tomorrow is liberal. If you only think documentaries count, there's plenty right-wing documentaries, they just go straight to video.

Were any Nam movies actually made WHILE the war was still being fought? Between this and the show on FX it's too much too soon, it's bad enough being worried about the boys I know on the ground without it being mass marketed for entertainment purposes

I believe the God awful propoganda film The Green Berets was made by John Wayne during the war.

IMDB info

I can't believe George Takei worked on this

Checked the site, yes, it was made during the war, and Takei missed The Trouble With Tribbles for THIS?

This is pre-Desert Storm.

Ahh, my bad. So people are trying to make it political because it has an anti-war message? Start burning books...

Eh, I don't think it looks too preachy. Then again, it's just a trailer. Even if it is anti-war, who cares?

I'd be more concerned with the November 2005 release. That's the launch of the holiday run of movies and this could get lost in the shuffle, especially if it has a downer feeling about it. Thing is, if they release it post Xmas, then it runs the risk of not making back much money, but as I stated earlier, it could get lost in the holiday movie shuffle and may not find an audience of people who want to see a movie about war during the holidays.

This thread shows what the movie's biggest problem in getting people to see it will be. Some are obviously just going to watch the trailer and assume it's "liberal prop".

Oh, man did the commercial that aired during Impact look good.

God bless Sam Mendes. Road to Peridition and American Beauty are two of my favourite movies of all time.

I was underwelhmed by the cast and the trailer. I'll just stick to "Over there", even with it's horrible title.

I didn't know "Jarhead" had a message so that doesn't influence me. Just don't get more than an "eh" from the trailer and not a fan of the director.

The movie takes place DURING Desert Storm.

I don't suppose any of you bashing this movie have actually SEEN IT have you?

Didn't think so.

I'm curious, did conservatives back in the day dismiss The Great Dictator, High Noon, In The Heat Of The Night and The Deer Hunter as liberal propaganda? There are plenty of movies with positive messages about America and plenty with negative messages. It doesn't necessarily affect the quality of the film, so why get hung up on it?

And yeah, Mendes is all right by me so far, so I'll probably go see it unless I hear awful things about it.

By the same token, those defending it haven't seen it, either.

Been there. Done that. Watched Kubrick do it 1000x better.

Agreed, but I'm pretty sure Sam Mendes will go about it a different way, Kubrick directed Full Metal Jacket with the intention of showing the dehumanization of war and the desensitation of violence it causes within the human psyche, while I think this is going for more of a different, social aspect to it. I'd hold off on any judgment until it comes out, Mendes is a more than competent director.

I can't see any way this could suck. Unless Akiva Goldsman wrote the script.

William Broyles, Jr. is credited with the screenplay. On the bright side, he penned Apollo 13 and Cast Away, but he also did the remake of Planet of the Apes, Entrapment, Unfaithful, and The Polar Express.

This should be a half way decent movie. All the Marine Corps movies I've ever seen haven't scratched the surface of what it's really like to be in the Corps.

Full Metal Jacket boot camp scenes were awfully tame compared to what I've seen and had done to me at boot camp.
