Matt Young 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2005 I've never been much of a hockey fan, although I loved older games such as NHL '94, NHL '97, NHL Breakaway '98, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey '98, etc. However, the labor dispute has actually caused me to pay attention to the sport, and I plan to watch this upcoming season. So really, others will have more to add here, but I felt that we needed a topic to discuss EA Sports' NHL '06 and 2K Sports' NHL 2K6 (and that Wayne Gretzky NHL game for PS2, I guess...), both of which were released on September 6th for PS2 and Xbox. An Xbox 360 release of 2K6 is scheduled for November. I've heard that 2K6 is not as good as in previous years, and that NHL is improved. I'm considering picking up 2K6 for league play, as it is only $20 and I like 2K Sports (NHL '06 is $30) but I want some opinions first.
Zack Malibu 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2005 The greatest hockey game ever was NHL '96. That said, I'm on the fence as to what one to buy this year, so thoughts and opinions are welcome.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2005 The greatest hockey game ever was NHL '96. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Incorrect. NHL '94 smokes it. I'll probably get both, but I'll have to play a demo to be sure. If ESPN makes a few tweaks on their previous game, they'll be the better game.
Matt Young 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2005 That's the thing... it's not ESPN anymore. They've got the Canadian Hockey Night crew (or something with a similar name) calling the action since 2K lost the ESPN license.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 7, 2005 Hockey Night in Canada? Even so, as long as they keep the same engine and don't tinker too much, it's worth the money. NHL 2K5 smoked NHL 2005.

The horror... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Aren't they both well past senility? I'd know, but I don't get many HNIC broadcasts in South Florida... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Ohhhhh yes. Neale is easily the worst colour man in the league. Cole would be the worst PBP guy except that Joe Bowen is still employed by the Leafs.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2005 Are we talking McCarver levels? I may have to watch some HNIC to see/hear just how bad this is.
treble 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2005 Oh, they're not THAT bad. Neale doesn't say 'An icing is just as good as a goal' or anything like that and there's just something right about hearing Bob Cole call a hockey game, even if he is 90 and falls behind the play sometimes (well, almost all of the time). I really liked the B-crew of Chris Cuthbert and Greg Millen over the 2 of them, but now that Cuthbert got canned and went to TSN, they're done. But if the CBC doesn't get their shit together, we won't be hearing any of them.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted September 8, 2005 I wonder if Neale would be as biased in this game as in real life.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted September 9, 2005 I doubt you could program that kind of biased. Because, not every game would involve the Leafs
kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2005 Incorrect. NHL '94 smokes it. My n*gga. I read somewhere that NHL '06 will have NHL '94 in the game (or it will have this year's rosters look/sound/act like the '94 version). Anyone else hear this? Also, will these new games feature all the new labor agreements, most notably the salary cap?...

Matt Young 0 Report post Posted September 9, 2005 Don't quote me on this, but from what I've read, I'm 99% sure he is not. His player model is available for download, however, along with (and I'm guessing here) probably some other rookies. A complete roster download covering the countless roster changes of late will be released prior to the start of the season.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted September 10, 2005 95 was the best, purely for the wicked Kirk McLean pic on the front.
the max 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2005 Wasn't '95 the year that they stopped letting you make people's heads bleed? I think it was the last year that you were allowed to make their legs flail when they got hurt as well. '94 still smokes it though. The Kings are fucking unstoppable in that game. lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2005 i am totally torn on which of the nhl 93-97 games were better but I might have to say that 94 has the most sentimental value. Its been over 10 years but my brother still points out he beat me 1-0 when i had like 44 shots with Vancouver(best team on the game) and he had like 7 shots with the devils and fucking Chris Terreri shut me out

Guest Olympic Slam Report post Posted September 10, 2005 I've never played NHL 94, but does anyome remember Stanley Cup Hockey for the SNES? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I loved that game, but NHL 94' for Sega is the best thing ever. The Kings were CRAZY good and it was the only game to ever use the Jaws music for the Sharks powerplay. Awesome! As for Stanley Cup: Mode 7 was the pimp shit back then. I bought that game with money I "won" at the horse races. Oh, to be ten and a compulsive gambler. I used to use the Penguins exclusively. Brett Hull hockey was pretty good too. But way too easy to score. Remember the Roller Hockey version of that engine? What a rip-off.

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2005 C'mon both of you are so wrong. NHL 95 was the best game for the SNES. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was a Genesis kid. And I heard '95 was more realistic and shit, but for me nothing provided more video game enjoyment than '94. Loved the one-timers and the manual goalie controls. In addition, the music was great for its time. It was the only game out there where we had realistic contests: Scores like 4-2 and 2-1 were commonplace for my friends and I, but the games were so fun to play, mostly because when you scored a goal, you had to work for it, not like the easy way to fake out the goalies in the first two NHL games; those contests ended up being 15-13 contests and took away the fun of the game for us. Because I was much better at Madden than anyone of my friends (they were much better at Mortal Kombat than I was, too) this was the only game we could play where anyone had a chance of winning... Matt Young 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2005 Re: Player downloads I have the PS2. Am I screwed here? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Honestly, I'm not sure, but since PS2 owners can play online, I'd imagine you could also download rosters/players.
10 Pounds 0 Report post Posted September 10, 2005 Have they fixed the franchise injury bug from last year ? As for retro hockey games, I gotta too with NHL '94. My team was the Canadiens ( Muller, Bellows and Damphousse on the 1st line ! ). Doing best-of-seven playoffs was so cool, but it sucked that there were no season mode. Of course, Ice Hockey and Blades of steel on the NES are classics too.
