So far, the two big ones are:

Packers WR Walker out for season with torn ACL

September 12, 2005

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (Ticker) - The Green Bay Packers lost their opener on Sunday and Brett Favre lost his top receiver for the rest of the season.

Wide receiver Javon Walker, who made the Pro Bowl in 2004 after catching 89 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns, tore his right ACL in Sunday's 17-3 loss to Detroit.

"Javon tore his right ACL and will be out six to 12 months," Packers coach Mike Sherman said at his media conference on Monday.

Walker suffered the injury when he caught a 55-yard pass down the right sideline and was tackled by Terrence Holt midway the third quarter. Walker was called for pass interference on the play.

Walker was able to walk off the field, but was carted to the locker room. He had four catches for 27 yards.

In the offseason, Walker's agent Drew Rosenhaus asked the Packers for a new contract but was rebuffed. Walker is in the fourth year of a five-year deal and will make $515,000 in 2005.

Robert Ferguson likely will replace Walker as a starter alongside Donald Driver. Ferguson, who had one catch for four yards on Sunday, lined up as the third receiver. That role now will be filled by rookie Terrence Murphy, a second-round pick out of Texas A&M.

"It's an opportunity for Ferguson and Murphy to step up," Sherman said. "Javon stepped up when he got his opportunity to play and now these guys will have to do the same."

A first-round pick in 2002, Walker caught a total of 64 passes in his first two seasons before becoming a starter in 2004.

and

Jenkins out for the season with torn ACL

By JENNA FRYER, AP Sports Writer

September 12, 2005

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Kris Jenkins was poised to regain his status as the best defensive tackle in the NFL this season. Instead, the cog of the Carolina Panthers' line will miss his second straight year due to injury.

Jenkins, a 2003 All-Pro, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Carolina's loss to the New Orleans Saints. Although he was injured in the first quarter, he said Monday he didn't realize the severity and briefly returned to the field in the third quarter before leaving for good.

``I didn't think it was that bad ... it felt like I had hyperextended it at first,'' he said. ``I could still run on the thing. I know that's a little odd.

``When I went back out there, I realized then I had torn something big.''

The two-time Pro Bowler missed 12 games last season with a shoulder injury, but declared himself fit last week and ready to return as the NFL's top defensive tackle.

So when he first left Sunday's game with the knee injury, he was determined to get back on the field. It was similar to last season, when Jenkins hurt his shoulder but played two more games before finally submitting to season-ending surgery.

``If I felt I've got a shot at playing, then I'm going to do that,'' he said. ``If I felt I could play, if I could still help give my team a shot, then I'm going to be out there.''

Jenkins, who was taken in and out of Bank of America Stadium on a golf cart, insisted on standing as he talked with reporters Monday. Midway through, he took a deep sigh and sat down in the cart, relieving all pressure on his heavily wrapped right leg.

This is the third season-ending injury for the Panthers, who were devastated last year with more than 12 players going down with such injuries. Jenkins joins safety Colin Branch (torn ACL) and rookie running back Eric Shelton (broken foot) on the injured list.

But the loss of Jenkins is the most significant and will carry heavy consequences for a defensive line regarded as one of the NFL's best. With Jenkins out, teams can now increase their coverage on All-Pro end Julius Peppers. It also leaves aging veteran Brentson Buckner vulnerable on run defense because he's not the stopper that Jenkins is.

Kindal Moorehead replaced Jenkins most of last season, but was inactive for Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Saints. When Jenkins was injured in the first quarter, the Panthers only had second-year player Jordan Carstens to fill in. Backup defensive end Al Wallace was sporadically used inside and admitted to being overmatched.

Aside from replacing Jenkins on the field, the Panthers must also work hard to prevent him from feeling disconnected with the team.

Jenkins admitted to struggling with depression last season while he was injured. He hit a low point after the Oakland Raiders beat the Panthers in Carolina and Jenkins watched Warren Sapp, his bitter rival, celebrate on the field.

Jenkins has said that moment sent him into a downward spiral and he began drinking too much. When he was finally cleared to play again, he was overweight and had to work hard this spring to get back into shape.

Carolina coach John Fox said the team would work with Jenkins to prevent that from happening again.

``It is a long process and something we are going to have to help him with,'' Fox said. ``I don't think there has ever been a player who has had an injury who hasn't struggled with it emotionally.

``It's something these guys work hard to do and not being a part of it is hard. I don't know many that have eased through it.''

Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker said the team will do its part to support Jenkins.

``We'll still be messing with him in the training room,'' Rucker said. ``We need to keep (him) feeling connected.''

The Panthers have offered Jenkins a support system and use of a counselor, but he so far plans to attack his emotions on his own. Jenkins said he learned from his bad experiences last season and won't repeat his mistakes.

``Last year was different. Last year was the first time I had to go through all of that,'' he said. ``I didn't know what it was going to be like not playing. I'm not going to sit here and act like it's going to be a nice time, sitting on the sideline and not being able to do anything.

``But my career is not over.''

Rough times for both of these guys, though the Panther's d-line would probably miss Jenkins more than the Packers will miss Walker. Although Walker's a great player, Ferguson is a starting-caliber receiver and him and Murphy should be able to fill the roles, considering that the majority of the offseason was spent preparing for a season-long holdout by Walker anyways. Wonder what'll happen with his contract negotiations as a result of this, by the way.

Both teams are losers here.

Favre needs all the help at WR he can get and the Panthers defense is now (potential) easy pickings for teams to run the ball down their throats. Both teams could have another long year ahead of them.

Not as major as the first two injuries, but Patrick Ramsey is questionable to practice with a sprained neck from the clothesline given to him by a Bears LB. (name escapes me right now)

After the replay, intentional or not, that should have been a 15 yard penalty. Stan Hansen and JBL couldn't have executed a better lariat than that guy and it should have been called.

I wonder if Ramsey fucked the lead NFL officials daughter or something as he gets the least respect of any QB I've seen in awhile. I remember a season or two ago, Roy Williams fucking german suplexed Ramsey for a sack in full view of the officials and nothing was called. Last I checked, you are not allowed to pick a person up and slam them to the ground, much less pick him up by the waist and head drop him.

How long will Kyle Boller be out?

X-rays on Ravens quarterback Kyle Boller's right toe were negative and he has been diagnosed with a hyper-extended right big toe.

Boller was injured Sunday night while being sacked by the Colts' Larry Triplett in the third quarter. He was helped from the field after the team trainer removed his right shoe and sock.

After Sunday night's game, Boller told The Baltimore Sun that his toe was sore.

"I've never had any foot problems before," Boller told the newspaper. "It's concerning because it's my plant foot."

Team officials told The Sun that there is no timetable for Boller's return.

"It's always more severe than it sounds," Ravens coach Brian Billick, who called the injury "severe turf toe" told the paper. "We'll have to see on the toe."

Boller was replaced by Anthony Wright, who entered with the Ravens trailing 17-0.

Boller was 15 of 23 for 141 yards and one interception before the injury.

"I love the fans of Baltimore, but that was a little classless," defensive end Tony Weaver told The Sun after some fans cheered Boller's injury. "Kyle is our guy. He is our quarterback and we are going to stand by him."

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

To me, the "turf toe" injury always seems a little shady. Maybe the Ravens wanted to pull Boller from the game intentionally but didn't want to let people on or something? Shit like that happens a lot..

Ravens have a Bye in week 3. I could see Boller starting in 3 weeks.

Which sucks, cause Im not the only one that thinks the Ravens are better off with Wright..and Wright will only get one game to make an impression that he needs to remain the starter even when Boller is ready to play.

Anyone seen how long Rex Grossman will be out, exactly? It was brought up in the other thread and now I'm curious.

Grossman's out for most of the season, with an outside shot of coming back for the last couple weeks, ala Mike Vick's injury in `03.
