Wrestlemania Anthology

Recommended Posts

Good question. There better be a lot of DVD-18s in the 21-disc set or a lot of the longer shows are going to look awful.

Haven't the last four WrestleManias or so been dual-layered, double-disc releases?

yea basically

wm 19 was a two disc, wm 20 was 3 disc but 3rd had just extars, wm 21 had 3 the 3rd was HOF

Horrible news regarding Jesse Ventura's commentary:

From Meltzer -- "I don't know, but I would presume no Ventura commentary on the Mania DVD's. Ventura's commentary will stay on 24/7 projects, but because of his lawsuit that he won years ago, he'd get a percentage of any tapes or DVD's with his commentary and they'd rather erase his voice than pay him that percentage."

It would be pretty hard to remove Ventura from the DVD's, though. He is shown many times during the events, so they'd have to edit the shit out of them if they were planning to cut him out of it.

So is the list at Silvervision wrong? They have what looks to be a chapter list of all of the DVDs, and it includes many mentions of Ventura.

http://www.silvervision.co.uk/viewindex.as...=wm1to21content

Isn't their information usually right? If so, I doubt they would keep any of Ventura's segments on the DVDs if they didn't include his commentary.

My only guess (and I know it's a stretch) is that Jesse's lawsuit was only for commentary, and it doesn't involve anything else like him being shown on TV for angles.

Let's say that sure, they don't have his commentary included. I don't want this to happen, it would be supid as fuck, but I'm just wondering if it would be fine. Would it be "legal" to find someone who can talk just like him, and record this guy saying all of Ventura's lines exactly the same, and putting that audio on the DVD?

Yeah, this is my thought as well. I'm pretty confident that Ventura's commentary WILL be on the DVD's. It would completely ruin the flow and the enjoyment of the first 6 shows if Ventura is cut out. There are several occasions where Jesse and Gorilla are "arguing" or generally being silly during a match, and these would make no sense with Jesse cut out. I'm betting they've paid him for the commentary this time, and we've got little to worry about. They're banking on this being a big hit, and I can't imagine that they would sell many at all if people found out the commentary was hacked.

If they did that, it would infringe on Jesse's intellectual property, which was more than likley covered in his lawsuit. It would be like my friends and I making a music cd, where we record everything from scratch, even though you would swear it was the actual album that some other band had put out, and then selling it for $1.

They may have paid off Ventura in 1998 when "The Collection" came out since all of the original WMI themes were in tact like "Eye of the Tiger", "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun", "Another One Bites the Dust", and "Born in the USA". Perhaps they paid all the royalties for those as well.

However for this set, they may not be willing to pay for anything which is a shame.

yep I have always wondered how they got away with that. dont hold your breath for the dvd set though. (though it would be a cool surprise if vicne and co handed out the cash and got the rights for the dvd)

Well since the absolute FUBAR with the ONS disc, it would be nice but I won't hold my breath for the wonderful people up north to actually open up their hearts to their fans and their checkbooks to the royalties

I read that Ventura wasn't even on the Hogan/Warrior match on the Warrior DVD, so I assume he won't be on this.

For a DVD such as for the Ultimate Warrior, they obviously thought it wasn't worth paying Jesse royalties for just one match. Instead they'll spend a lot of time making sure all his commentary is gone (in the documentary part also).

After all other recent DVD releases, I'm guessing the Bret and Jake DVDs will have all Jesse's commentary removed which may spoil some matches

Yes, they are being sold in sets of 5 each (1-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16-20) The entire boxset, from what I understand, will include WM 21 as well.

I'm in the same boat. I don't need 16-21, as I already have the original DVD releases, and they'll be edited all to hell in the Anthology. But, I will purchase the first three set just as soon as I see them.

I wonder if Wal-Mart is planning on carrying these, or just the whole set, or not at all . . . .

While we're on the subject - has there been any early sightings of the set on sale? I know that many times some retailers will "accidentally" put things out a bit early . . .

I very much doubt this sort of thing would be put out early as the fines are incredible

Same thing here. I already own WManias 16 thru 21 on DVD, so I'll just get the first 3 sets, but I'm only getting Vol. 2 first, because with Star Wars Ep.III, Seinfeld season 5 and the Bret Hart DVD set all coming out in November it's gonna be hard on the wallet.

Ok, now we have some answers. Someone on DVDTalk got this early, and posted the following. Some of it will piss you off, but some of it will convince you to buy it:

The video store i manage got this in today, i'm taking it for the full weekend so i will try to give some details on it throughout the next few days and i hope this might help any who are still undecided about purchasing the set. I haven't had the chance to watch any yet but i did get to open it. First of all, this set should be able to fit into everybody's bookshelf or shelving unit. I was kinda worried that it wouldn't.

2nd, each disk is a flipper. Not sure if each wrestlemania event is split in two or if there are just special features on the back. If it's a flipper does that make it a Dvd-18? Just curious. I usually hate flippers. THe packaging is also of the fold out variety. If you've seen the Alien Anthology Set, its pretty much like that.

3rd, this is my first serious problem with the set, besides being flippers, which i could handle. To open the box you pull the top half off, and then you see the 4 digipacks or whatever you call them. But the digipacks only hold the first 20 Wrestlemania's. Which caught my attention because i was looking for the WM21. Guess where i find it. Attached to the inside top of the top half of the box. Basically it looks like they glued a dvd try into the top of the box. Nothing is protecting the DVD at all. I can't believe they didn't just add it the packs. Did they forget about the last WM? 2nd Worst packaging Idea ever, onyl to the Undertaker debacle. Honestly, this is a sad, sad, piece of workmanship. I couldn't get the disk out very easily either. And if that disk becomes a floater, it'll have plently of room to get scatched up. The absolute first thing everyone will say when they see it is, WHY!?! Or if you did get a floater.. WTF?

Ok enough complaining, Other than that, the packaging is rather cool. Now i'm off to watch wrestlemania 1. I'll give details on if Ventura, Blurred out images, and quality either tonight or tomorrow. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask and i'll try to answer.

To answer some of your questions: I have no idea on the opening theme. I don't really know Phil Collins music very well.

But Girls Just wanna have fun is used with Cyndie Lauper. Hogan's intro was with "I am a Real American". Are you sure that's not the right song for it?

Also, apparently the disks are not flippers. I tried the other side of the disk and nothing happened. SO basically they gave us double sided disks for no reason. Couldn't they have sprung for some disk art or something.

Anyways onto some good news. Ventura is one of the commentators with Monsoon. Also, the WWF logo is in full effect. I hope it continues for the most of the other wrestlemania's.

And just a note on content. I never realized how bad the first wrestlemania. Not the matches, which aren't the best. But the interviews and the down times inbetween matches is horrible. Lord Alfred Hayses seemed absolutely lost and looked like he was carrying a program just to keep track. Ricky Steamboat was by far the best wrestler at the event. Not just wrestling wise but his interview was decent too.

If anyone else has any questions about any of the other wrestlemania's let me know i can jump ahead if need be.

So according to the DVDTalk guy, here's what we know about the set so far:

-Each disc is dual-sided, but only 4-7 and 16-21 have data on both sides.

-The disc for 21 is housed in the lid of the box, with no case.

-Ventura's commentary has not been edited out.

-Significant blurring of the scratch logo on 15-18.

More:

Here's an update:

First of all, apparently the disks are flippers. Just not all of the disks are flippers. The first 3 WM are not flippers but i believe the rest are. The show is split over the two sides.

As for the extras, all i saw on some of them were interviews and stuff like that. don't know if you classify that as bonus features.

I just checked out WM 17 and god dammit, we have blurring of the WWF logo. VERY annoying. They did the corner, the belts, the logos on the ref shirts, the shirts on the camera crew, and even on some fan signs. VERY lame. I'll try to find out later today if i can see which WM it starts with because the first WM had no blurring what so ever.

So expect another update later.

OK here's the list of flippers and non flippers:

WM 1: No Flip

WM 2: No flip

WM 3: No Flip

WM 4: FLipper

WM 5: Flipper

WM 6: Flipper

WM 7: Flipper

WM 8: No Flip

WM 9: No Flip

WM 10: No Flip

WM 11: No Flip

Wm 12: No Filp

WM 13: No Flip

WM 14: No Flip

Wm 15: No flip

WM 16: FLipper

WM 17: Flipper

WM 18: Flipper

WM 19: Flipper

WM 20: Flipper

WM 21: Flipper

There seems to be rhyme or reason as to why some disks are flippers and others are not. The 3rd digipack is all NO flippers and the 4th is all Flippers. But the first two are a combination. Very Confusing.

Also i am guessing that all the blurring will take effect in WM 15. In each digipack there is the OFficial logo for that WM above each disk. The first 14 still have WWF in them, but 15 does not and rest of them do not as well.

More to come later.

Ugh... it's only been what, three years since they've been bluring the scratch logo and ONLY the scartch logo... and this guy is just noticing now? Anyway that was all fairly predictable in terms of what would and wouldn't be blurred but it's good to know Jesse's commentary was paid for. He also seems confused by the issue of why some are "flippers" when the reason is right in front of him (show length).

We can't all be me though.

For the person who asked about it being sold. ROH put it on sale Thursday Night and will have them tonight at the show for sale. Not sure on retail outlets though.

For any Aussies (like me), it will apparently be released November 21st and will cost $399.95 ($350 at Atlantic Video though).

I don't own any Wrestlemanias on VHS/DVD, but I still don't know whether this boxset is worth the hefty price.

As an update - I just purchased the first three volumes of the Anthology at Wal-Mart. Our store had each of the individual volumes, but not the entire boxset. They sold for $42.88 each. Pricier than deepdiscountdvd and a couple of other places, but I'm impatient.

Haven't gotten to watch any yet as I'm at work, hopefully will know more later . . . .

Went to FYE to buy the boxed set and Star Wars today. At first, I didn't see the box set anywhere, so I was going to just buy Volumes I-III. When I got to the counter, the person showed me the boxed set, which she had just brought out from the back. It was a little under $180 I believe.

Having the WM 21 disc at the very top of the box is just as bad as it sounds when you read about it above.

I haven't watched anything in full yet. I've just popped in a few just to check things out. I put in IV, and Ventura's there for commentary.

I put in 13, and the one edit I saw with music and what not was the Godwinns/Hillbilly Jim edited to some random barnyard music. For some reason, they left the two promos for the April 97 IYH PPV in tact, which is really strange since they usually edit those out of every release.

X7 doesn't have Limp Bizkit's 'My Way' at all, which sucks very much. That means it's not in the intro, recap video, or build-up video for Austin-Rock. Meanwhile, looking at the insert and listings for XIX, both Limp Bizkit performances are listed. I would assume that 'Crack Addict' is left there, unless WWE's allowed to use live performances as opposed to theme songs.

I never bought 21 on DVD, so I don't know what the original DVD was like, but this version edited out the theme song for the event. I can't remember the name. ('Big Time'?)

I bought the package for the early WM's anyway, so I'm not THAT bothered by some of the edits and blurring in the later ones. The collectors cards that come in each package are cool, though.
