OAO TV Cancellations 2005-06 Thread

Recommended Posts

Figured I'd make this just for the hell of it.

So far we've had the confirmed cancellations of...

Just Legal (WB) - A decent law dramedy that was never going to find an audience after freakin' 7th Heaven. Canceled after two weeks.

Head Cases (FOX) - You know a show's ratings are disastrous when reruns of Nanny 911 build upon the previous week. The first thirty minutes of the pilot was just A-W-F-U-L, nearly leading me to just delete it. Most TV audiences aren't as forgiving as me, so that probably sealed its fate.

Likely canceled...

Inconceivable (NBC) - Yet another show that looks to be gone after two episodes. I saw those episodes a couple weeks ago on a screener DVD from NBC, and was really expecting to enjoy it. I thought it would a David E. Kelly-like dramedy with quirky characters and imaginative storylines. The stories were fun, but the characters were crap, and so was timeslot. Production's been stopped, leaving NBC time to "reevaluate" the show, so yeah, it's gone.

Sex, Love, & Secrets (UPN) - Did anyone else actually know the show existed? The advertising made it out to be a Denise Richards-lead drama, which isn't true, and even if it was that's a shitty marketing campaign. The star is Eric Balfour, from the TCM remake, the failed Hawaii, and long guest spots on 24 and Six Feet Under. Balfour is ratty, so it's hard to buy him as either a hairdresser or a former marketing man. The second episode got a terrible 1.1, and production has apparently stopped.

I had some empathy for Sex, Love, & Secrets after the decent pilot, but Jesus Christ did they copy Desperate Housewives. There's a voiceover by a Mary Alice Young-sounding woman that tries to make the show out to be more intelligent than it actually is that is just annoying.

Kitchen Confidential may have stopped production, but I won't write its obituary until I know for certain.

I have a horrible feeling Veronica Mars is going to get the boot, but I pray it won't.

I wouldn't worry about it for now. VM premiered last season to the same numbers that it has received the last two weeks (a 2.3 or so). Especially now that it's against Lost, which UPN should know it's not competing with anytime soon, VM is probably secure.

That is, of course, assuming the numbers don't dip. A 2.0 is acceptable for UPN, especially for a critically-praised show. Those stupid UPN sitcoms usually grab 2.4s, and they can't be put on every night of the week.

Inconcieveable was cancelled.

Marc Berman said How I Met Your Mother might be getting the axe soon which worries me. I love that show and well....I want to know how he met their mother!

I pray for The War At Home to be destroyed.

Have any of you guys actually watched that horrible piece of shit show yet?

It's gotten better, They went from zero laughs in the pilot to about 3 1/2 chuckles in the last episode. Maybe by the season finale, I'll have a full laugh.

I can't even watch it anymore. I gave it a shot, I really did, but after two episodes I just coulnd't continue. I have the last two on my computer, but I doubt I'll watch it.

How a horrible show like that can get better ratings than say, Arrested Development, I'll never know.

Is Surface still on? That show got some of the heaviest promotion of any new show this fall. I caught the first episode and if that wasn't the television equivilent of a sleeping pill, then I don't know what is.

I heard Reunion was getting cut. I know it is on hiatus for a couple of weeks due to baseball, but I saw on 411mania.com/movies that it was going to be cancelled. I watch the show with my girlfriend, and was actually looking forward to seeing who was killed, who the killer was, and why the murder took place.

If you want to have a hit tv show dont cast Will Estes. I swear that kid is on more cancelled shows than anybody in TV history.

That one girl from Reunion is bad luck as well. She was the punk chick in "That 80's Show" and also in some chick sitcom last year that was canceled after one show.

It's pretty boring, though it does have it's moments.

I hope Threshold stays for a while. I'm really loving that show.

I'm hoping Threshold goes. Acting is good, the story isn't. Die, Braga!!

To be fair to Ted McGinley, he joined Happy Days when it was long past due to be cancelled. He was on Dynasty during it's final years as well as The Love Boat. As far as Married With Children, Ted was on that show for years. I also enjoyed the Jefferson Darcy character alot more than Steven Rhodes.

She was also the star in Not Another Teen Movie though. Which is a pretty big (I guess you would say cult) hit.

Concerning How I Met your Mother, Seattle Times' TV columnist just said it was picked up for a full season already, along with Earl, Everyone Hates Chris, and one other sitcom I that I can't remember.

Well, there was just a google ad at the top of the forums page for "Reunion" on Fox, so I guess it hasn't been cancelled yet.

Anyone else watch that? I'm not terribly into it, but like I said I have been watching it with my g/f and I would hate to always wonder what the ending would have been.

The War At Home. Which was pretty much a lock considering it's sandwiched into Animation Sunday.

Paula Marshall=show killer

He's the new Ted McGinley?

She. But I don't think she's in the same boat as McGinley.

And Quintuplets sucked, even with Andy Richter. Especially considering how funny Andy Richter Controls the Universe was.

BLASPHEMY!!!!

Though Andy Richters Controls The Universe was a better show, Quintuplets was cool, well I guess at least to me. andy and the weirdo son Pierce made the show for me.

I actually watched every episode of "That 80's Show" still thought it was funnier than any recent season of 70s

I'm in shock that not only hasn't it been cancelled yet, Ghost Whisperer is STILL the top show on Fridays. Though NBC is mulling moving Criminal Intent to Fridays, so that might change very soon.

And I can't be any more happier that reality TV seems to be finally dying the death I've been waiting for.

I hate that Les was right about replacing Joan with Ghost Whisperer. Really pisses me off, especially since JOA had no resolution.

And yes, I'm required to bitch about Joan's cancellation and Ghost Whisperer everytime I see it mentioned.

Bones got a full season renewal. Here's Marc Berman, of mediaweek's status on the new shows:

NEW SERIES RESULTS

(in order of viewership)

-Commander in Chief (ABC, Tues. 9 p.m.): week two

Viewers: 16.94 million (#8), A18-49: 4.8/12 (#13t)

Without Fox’s House in the competitive mix this week, Commander in Chief built from its already impressive debut.

----------

-My Name Is Earl (NBC, Tues. 9 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 13.23 million (#18), A18-49: 6.0/15 (#11t)

Chances are bona fide hit My Name is Earl will be anchoring Thursday on NBC next season.

----------

-Criminal Minds (CBS, Wed. 9 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 11.98 million (#24), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#39t)

Despite facing ABC’s Lost, Criminal Minds is carving a solid niche for itself.

-----

Out of Practice (CBS, Mon. 9:30 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 11.73 million (#26), A18-49: 3.7/ 9(#31t)

Consider the generic Out Of Practice temporary time period filler out of Two and a Half Men. Henry Winkler would be better off trying to squeeze into his old leather jacket than this half-baked effort.

----------

-Invasion (ABC, Wed. 10 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 11.38 million (#28), A18-49: 4.4/11 (#22t)

More erosion in week three and retention of just 51 percent in viewers and 48 percent among adults 18-49 out of Lost is concerning.

-----------

-Ghost Whisperer (CBS, Fri. 8 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 11.07 million (#32), A18-49: 3.0/10 (#42t)

Consistency and another dominant time period finish makes older skewing Ghost Whisperer the surprise potential new hit of the season.

-----

-How I Met Your Mother (CBS, Mon. 8:30 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 10.44 million (#33), A18-49: 3.9/10 (#27t)

Solid retention out of lead-in King of Queens means a full season renewal is coming at any moment.

-----

-Close To Home (CBS, Tues. 10 p.m.): premiere

Viewers: 10.43 million (#34), A18-49: 3.3/ 8 (#39t)

Similar to former time period occupant Judging Amy at its worst.

-----

-Surface (NBC, Mon. 8 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 9.50 million (#38), A18-49: 3.0/ 8 (#42t)

Consistency from weeks two to three is the one potential positive to make note of.

-----

-Prison Break (Fox, Mon. 9 p.m.): week five

Viewers: 9.48 million (#39), A18-49: 4.5/11 (#18t)

The first new series renewed for the full season, and a bona fide keeper based on the competitive severity of the Monday 9 p.m. time period and lack of lead-in support.

-----

-E-Ring (NBC, Wed. 8 p.m.): week three (time period debut)

Viewers: 8.51 million (#45), A18-49: 2.5/ 7 (#56t)

Although relocating to Wednesday at 8 p.m. gave E-Ring a minor boost, it’s not enough to warrant a full season renewal.

-----

-Threshold (CBS, Fri. 9 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 8.25 million (#49), A18-49: 2.4/ 7 (#60t)

Respectable lead-in support from Ghost Whisperer has benefited the compatible Threshold.

-----

-Three Wishes (NBC, Fri. 8 p.m.): week three (two hours)

Viewers: 6.89 million (#64t), A18-49: 2.0/ 6 (#76t)

The last thing NBC needed was a two-hour edition of the sugary Three Wishes this week.

-----

-The Apprentice: Martha Stewart (NBC, Wed. 9 p.m.): week three (time period debut)

Viewers: 6.34 million (#68), A18-49: 2.5/ 6 (#56t)

Despite minor growth in week three, Martha still does not “fit in.”

-----

-Everybody Hates Chris (UPN, Thurs. 8 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 5.96 million (#72t), A18-49: 2.2/ 6 (#68t)

If Everybody Hates Chris levels off now, UPN has its first bona fide hit sitcom.

-----

-The Night Stalker (ABC, Thurs. 9 p.m.): week two

Viewers: 5.92 million (#74), A18-49: 2.2/ 5 (#68t)

A loss of 1.2 million viewers and 15 percent among adults 18-49 from its already modest debut one week earlier means the cancellation clock could be already ticking on The Night Stalker.

-----

-Supernatural (WB, Tues. 9 p.m.): week four

Viewers: 5.40 million (#79), A18-49: 2.4/ 6 (#60t)

Growth in week four with almost full retention out of lead-in Gilmore Girls are two reasons why the full-season renewed Supernatural is poised for a long run.

-----

-Killer Instinct (Fox, Fri. 9 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 4.95 million (#83), A18-49: 1.7/ 5 (#86t)

Despite growth out of waiting to be axed lead-in Malcolm in the Middle, the cancellation clock for Killer Instinct is ticking.

-----

-Love, Inc. (UPN, Thurs. 8:30 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 3.23 million (#100), A18-49: 1.3/ 3 (#96t)

Retention of just 54 percent in total viewers and 59 percent among adults 18-49 out of lead-in Everybody Hates Chris this week remains a concern.

-----

-Just Legal (WB, Mon. 9 p.m.): week three

Viewers: 2.88 million (#103), A18-49: 0.9/ 2 (#111t)

So long, Don Johnson.

----------

-Related (WB, Wed. 9 p.m.): premiere

Viewers: 2.77 million (#104), A18-49: 1.3/ 3 (#96t)

Minus adequate lead-in support from the season-premiere of One Tree Hill (Viewers: #96, 3.46 million; A18-49: #86t, 1.7/ 5) , and opposite ABC’s Lost, the Related faces an uphill battle.

----------

-Twins (WB, Fri. 8:30 p.m.): week four

Viewers: 2.47 million (#111), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#108t)

Word of advice: don’t get too used to Twins.

----------

-Sex, Love & Secrets (UPN, Tues. 9 p.m.): week two

Viewers: 1.40 million (#115), A18-49: 0.6/ 1 (#115)

Dead-last in all of primetime for the second consecutive week and, thankfully, put out of its misery.

Killer Instinct isn't all that bad now that I've seen the first episode. The two leads just aren't very good, which is a death touch for show. The awesomeness of Jeffrey Nordling as the killer helped it out a bit, although Chi McBride without the Boston Public goatee just doesn't work.

I missed last Friday's episode, but Killer Instinct is so hilariously over the top, that you can't help but love it.

It's basically just storylines that probably were rejected from CSI for being too stupid, since the guy who does it used to work on CSI.

I like it though, and it's good Friday night television.

I bet Dick Wolf has some satisfaction knowing NBC was retarded to cancel TBJ.
