Ravenbomb Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 So, I was thinking, is there something like the iPod, but for video games? Like, with an iPod, you load the mp3's onto it and play them. Video games have roms and such, so (unless I'm wrong), there could be a similar device in which you load the roms onto it and can play them.
The Metal Maniac Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 I know you can somehow get Nintendo and SNES roms on PSP's, but that's it.
Ravenbomb Posted October 16, 2005 Author Report Posted October 16, 2005 Really? *shrug* Seems like something people'd be working on...
k thx Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 You can get them on a PDA, such as an iPaq. Also, some basic ones on a mobile phone. However, because it's a tad illegal, I strongly doubt any company will make an out and out rom-player.
The Metal Maniac Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Yeah, but you gotta consider the legal side of it. ROMS are technically illegal to have in the first place, so anyone who wanted to make something that was specifically just for these would have a lot of copyright issues.
Ravenbomb Posted October 16, 2005 Author Report Posted October 16, 2005 Similar arguments were made about mp3 players at first (IIRC). Why not just sell Roms on their website or something?
MrRant Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 You can mod GBA pretty easily to play NES and SNES cames and then store the roms on a Compact Flash card.
k thx Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Similar arguments were made about mp3 players at first (IIRC). Why not just sell Roms on their website or something? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Then why not get a GBA/DS/PSP
Ravenbomb Posted October 16, 2005 Author Report Posted October 16, 2005 Why not get a CD player instead of an mp3 player? I don't think this (thread) is going to start going anywhere anytime soon, so I'll just drop it.
El Psycho Diablo Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Similar arguments were made about mp3 players at first (IIRC). Why not just sell Roms on their website or something? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Then why not get a GBA/DS/PSP <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Because charging $20 for a game you made years ago, and just repackaged should be price gouging? (At least, for the GBA side of things..)

(At least, for the GBA side of things..) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> True, but if you're gonna charge for ROMs, why not just get a second hand game off eBay. This thread is going nowhere. We should forget it ever happened. Although I still reccomend an iPaq as the best option.
Fökai Posted October 16, 2005 Report Posted October 16, 2005 Similar arguments were made about mp3 players at first (IIRC). <{POST_SNAPBACK}> People can use the argument that they use the iPod for their ripped CD's. Apple masks any illegal activity by allowing iPod users to purchase legal copies of most songs. There's nothing legal at all about emulation. The general law brought by the emulator creators is that you can only play the game if you own the hard copy of the game itself. If that is the strongest argument that emulation has, there's no way that something legal will come out. Just get a PSP. It's the closest thing you'll ever get to the real deal without getting into trouble.
razazteca Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 GP32 buy one or get flashcarts for whatever portable you own.
tekcop Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 I have a flash cart and a GBA. I love it very, very, very much.
k thx Posted October 17, 2005 Report Posted October 17, 2005 GP32 buy one or get flashcarts for whatever portable you own. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I wouldn't spend anything on something that shoddy.
Positively Kanyon Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 Get the successor to the GP32, the GP2X. Way more features and supports more emulators as well as it's able to play DivX/XviD videos and so on.
