2005-2006 MLB Offseason thread

I don't know how reliable this is, but a Newsday article is saying Boras asking price on Damon is 84 million over sevrn years.

Insane.

I doubt Damon will get it, but that's fine. Boras' tactic is to start high, and work his way down. It's certainly better than starting low. It's all part of the negotiations, and it's not a problem unless some team buys it.

So Matsui now makes $13mill a year and most likely has bonuses he can make too. That's quite the raise from what he made before.

Theo Epstein wants his job back. Just once I'd like the Red Sox to have a drama free off-season.

So I heard some Met trades, don't know if they're true. First one is Cameron for Otsuka (sp?), the Padres reliever. The other one is Heilman for Todd Walker. Again, don't know if they're legit.

The Mets have agreed to trade Mike Cameron to the Padres for outfielder/first baseman Xavier Nady, a person familiar with the situation said today, with San Diego awaiting the result of a physical to check Cameron's eyesight in the wake of his last season's damaging collision with Carlos Beltran.

The righthanded-hitting Nady, 27, batted .261 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs in 326 at-bats for the Padres in 2005. He appeared in 68 games in the outfield, 44 at first base, and three at third base.

Cameron, a 10-year veteran, batted .273 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 308 at-bats for the Mets last year. He missed the first month of the season recovering from wrist surgery and his year was cut short when he collided with Beltran in a game against the Padres on August 11.

the Cameron deal is pending a physical as the Padres wanna see if his eyesight is ok. Acquiring Xavier Nady is supposedly part of a bigger deal where the Mets send a package to Boston for Manny. I don't know about that though since the Red Sox don't even have a GM.

Only Cubs trade I could find was this

The Chicago Cubs today traded right-handed pitcher Jon Leicester to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later.

Well, if this is the end of the trade (i.e., they're not sending Nady to Boston after this), it's not a bad deal at all. Nady's younger, about as good a hitter, and can play several positions. You sacrifice a bit of defense if you play Nady in OF, but at the same time, you get someone who can play 1B just in case Jacobs completely bombs. Also, there's no telling if Cameron will ever be the same after surgery.

More good news for the cash strapped Marlins...

Dontrelle Willis is expected to get the largest ever first year arbitration in MLB history - somewhere in the neighborhood of 4.5-5 million.

And next year comes Cabrera. Oh god.

The Blue Jays have offered AJ Burnett 5 years and 50 mil.

There's so many things wrong there, I don't even have time to list them all.

Other players have made more, but they reached contracts with their teams before coming to arbitration. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Marlins and Willis reach a three year deal.

Gagknee only got $5 mil in his first year of arbitration. If I remember correctly he won the Cy Young, asked for 8 million, got 5. I laughed.

$5.5 Million a year? (Or $3.5 Mil if the player option's included in that). If this is a harbinger of things to come, the best teams will be the ones who DON'T spend money this offseason. That's a huge chunk of change to spend on a pitcher who's essentially a situational lefty.

Eyre had a very good year but it looks rather fluky when you look at his career numbers and that he'll be 34 next year. At $5.5 million/year they better hope he duplicates his 2005 numbers.

Again if I'm a GM I completely avoid this free agent market as much as I can and look for trades to improve my team.

So the Braves are going to pocket the extra money, or what?

They have a few weaknesses, but I don't think there's a strong enough free agency pool to pursue them. They're probably going to reach for a middle reliever and get burned by it.
