Mik 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Looks like we're about to have ourselves an old-fashioned bidding war. Beckett is better than any free agent on the market, easily...so why not... Monday, November 21, 2005 The Texas Rangers remained optimistic Sunday that pitcher Josh Beckett would anchor their starting rotation next season. But a baseball source with knowledge of the negotiations said the Marlins won't trade their 2003 World Series hero without receiving a top pitching prospect from Texas. The source also said there is a chance Beckett would remain with Florida in 2006 because the Marlins won't make any concessions in negotiations for their right-handed pitcher. At least six teams are interested in Beckett, but the Rangers are one of four teams in serious pursuit of him, the source said, adding that there is another team that has presented Florida with a more attractive proposal than the one presented by Texas. The source would not identify that team, only to characterize the Rangers as being second in the pack. One of the teams pursuing Beckett is the Boston Red Sox. The Detroit Tigers are thought to be another team in the Beckett hunt. As of Sunday night, the Rangers felt they had "given it their best shot," according to an industry source, and were waiting to hear back from Florida. On the table is a deal to send Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to the Rangers for third baseman Hank Blalock. The original deal called for Texas to include either left-hander John Danks, the organization's first-round draft pick in 2003, or right-hander Thomas Diamond, the team's first-round pick in 2004. The Rangers' front office is divided over whether to include either pitcher, but the Marlins could walk away from negotiations if they don't get one of them. Florida also is telling teams that Lowell — and the $18 million he is owed in the next two years — must be included in any deal for Beckett. I'm guessing all of these other teams and all of the media didn't get the memo that Beckett is terrible.
the max 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 He is? At worst, he's a #3 starter. On Texas, he instantly becomes their ace.
Mik 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 No, no, no. I think Beckett is awesome. That was in reference to all that went on in pages 13-14. I think Beckett would be the ace of about 85-90% of the teams in the MLB.
Cuban Linx 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 He's certainly a VAST improvement on Texas entering last season with Ryan Drese as their supposed 'ace'. The Rangers need to pull this off if they can, it's a better deal than blowing the bank on an inferior Florida pitcher in AJ Burnett like i expected them to at least attempt to do, and probably still will if they can't grab Beckett. mike546 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 I know the dailynews isn't a terrific source, but its reporting that the Tigers offered Craig Monroe and some prospects for Carl Pavano, and the Yankees turned it down!?!? An Outfielder with great range, who had 90 RBIs and 20 HRs in Comerica, and you don't want him?!? Sure his OBP is pretty bad, but hes basically got decent splits from both sides of the plate, and again, plays an awesome CF. Saying this report is true, wtf are the Yankees thinking? The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Part of me hoped he'd stay in the NL just so when he'd face the Cubs and have to come out of the game early, I could keep yelling "I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON MAH FINGERS!"

Saying this report is true, wtf are the Yankees thinking? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's a stretch to say he plays an "awesome" CF. He's only played CF 62 times in his career, and last season his numbers were below league average at the position. Also, he's a left-center pull hitter, so not a good fit for Yankee stadium. He's a decent player, but nothing special really. They can do better than Monroe in a Pavano deal.
Guest Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Something I just heard on the radio...... The Dodgers are hiring Jim fucking Fregosi to be their manager. Shoot me.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 21, 2005 news about Al's second favorite player from rotoworld Minor league free agent Calvin Pickering went 3-for-4 with with two RBI and two walks in a doubleheader for Los Mochis of the MPL yesterday. Pickering ranks second in Mexico in OBP and slugging. He's tied for second with 10 homers in 108 at-bats. just for you Al
Guest StylesMark Report post Posted November 21, 2005 They paid way too much for Pavano to let him go for Monroe...that's why it was turned down. Pavano money SHOULD bring in something better. Of course, he proved he had no worth last season...but.
Guest Report post Posted November 21, 2005 Monroe is likely the best player they could get for him.
mike546 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 According to Jason Stark, Lowell and Beckett are going to the Red Sox. edit: Gammons confirmed it on SC. FUCK.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Really? How the hell did the Red Sox pull that one off? We have no GM!
mike546 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 How in the HELL is Lester not in this? Only Ramierz and Sanchez? GOD DAMMIT. I'm guessing George forces Cashman to overreact, and signs either Morris or Millwood to 4 year deals.

Guest Report post Posted November 22, 2005 That's almost as bad as the hiring of Fregosi, but that's not enough to fix my day.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 a healthy Schilling and Josh Beckett are a pretty good 1-2 punch in either league. Its still alot of salary to pick up so I wonder if a Manny trade is near. I also wonder if they'll try to move Lowell or keep him and put Youkilis at first. Guest Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Lowell stays. Too much upside with the Green Monster.
Mik 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Interesting. Step out for dinner and miss everything. I like this trade better than the proposed Rangers trade, but I was downright salivating at the Joel Guzman/Chad Billingsley rumor that was floated earlier today. Thanks for the memories, Josh. Now that he's on the Sox I have some cards to sell.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Lowell stays. Too much upside with the Green Monster. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I was thinking the same thing actually, but I don't want to see Kevin Millar part two. Not to mention I'd like to see Youkilis at third base. Somebody is going to have to be moved to first base out of the two if Lowell stays. Sox have alot of starting pitching right now... Schilling, Beckett, Wells, Clement, Arroyo, Wakefield, Papelbon, and Miller. Wells won't be sticking around and Wade Miller probably won't be ready for the start of the season. I suspect they put Arroyo in the bullpen and go Schilling Beckett Clement Wakefield Papelbon
Guest Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Lowell's going to be near impossible to move again and that's the bad part of this trade. If he starts poorly, he's immovable. I'd look for the Sox to try to move Arroyo with Lowell but if that doesn't work, Lowell's probably going to start at 3rd with Youkilis at 1st.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 The Twins have shown interest in Lowell. If the Red Sox could move him there and eat about half the contract while picking up somebody like J.C. Romero then I'd be happy as a pig in shit. Essentially it would be... Sanchez Hanley Ramirez (who has a shot at being a stud player) PTBNL $9mill for Josh Beckett J.C. Romero I can live with that. I don't have to pay the $9mill
Guest StylesMark Report post Posted November 22, 2005 No one is sure if Schilling will ever be Schilling again. He did what he needed to in 2004, and was never the same in 2005. I really doubt he'll ever be the same, the same doubts I have about Randy Johnson. I don't fear Beckett, not even after he wiped the floor with us in 2003. The transition from NL to AL doesn't seem to work so well in the first season. Georgie is seething though. What's up with AJ Burnett? I wonder if Clemens phone will be ringing anytime soon... Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Great trade for the Sox. The Yankees need to trade away Pavano for Monroe, and sign AJ Burnett, instead of focusing on fucking Delgado.
Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 22, 2005 I wonder if Clemens phone will be ringing anytime soon... If it is then it won't be New York calling. They let him go on waivers last year, but put a claim through on Andy Pettite. I was just thinking, if Manny does get traded then it will most likely be to the Mets. Any deal with the Mets will most likely include Yusmeiro Petit. If that happened then the Red Sox could be looking at a future staff of Beckett Papelbon Lester Petit random 5th starter that would be a filthy rotation
Guest StylesMark Report post Posted November 22, 2005 Didn't Clemens insinuate last year, that if he went anywhere else, it would be NY? That's the only reason I said that. Steinbrenner should be kicking himself for letting Pettite go. He WOULD have stayed, had they showed a little more interest. Instead, Georgie went wining and dining on Sheffield and let Andy get away.
