Insane. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I doubt Damon will get it, but that's fine. Boras' tactic is to start high, and work his way down. It's certainly better than starting low. It's all part of the negotiations, and it's not a problem unless some team buys it.

The righthanded-hitting Nady, 27, batted .261 with 13 home runs and 43 RBIs in 326 at-bats for the Padres in 2005. He appeared in 68 games in the outfield, 44 at first base, and three at third base. Cameron, a 10-year veteran, batted .273 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 308 at-bats for the Mets last year. He missed the first month of the season recovering from wrist surgery and his year was cut short when he collided with Beltran in a game against the Padres on August 11.

Acquiring Xavier Nady is supposedly part of a bigger deal where the Mets send a package to Boston for Manny. I don't know about that though since the Red Sox don't even have a GM. Only Cubs trade I could find was this The Chicago Cubs today traded right-handed pitcher Jon Leicester to the Texas Rangers in exchange for a player to be named later. Link

devo Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 Well, if this is the end of the trade (i.e., they're not sending Nady to Boston after this), it's not a bad deal at all. Nady's younger, about as good a hitter, and can play several positions. You sacrifice a bit of defense if you play Nady in OF, but at the same time, you get someone who can play 1B just in case Jacobs completely bombs. Also, there's no telling if Cameron will ever be the same after surgery.

If this is a harbinger of things to come, the best teams will be the ones who DON'T spend money this offseason. That's a huge chunk of change to spend on a pitcher who's essentially a situational lefty.

At $5.5 million/year they better hope he duplicates his 2005 numbers. Again if I'm a GM I completely avoid this free agent market as much as I can and look for trades to improve my team.

They have a few weaknesses, but I don't think there's a strong enough free agency pool to pursue them. They're probably going to reach for a middle reliever and get burned by it.
