UZI Suicide 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 What does a 30 game win streak, 2 straight national championships, #1 in both polls, and not having lost a game in regulation in nearly 4 years get you? #2 in the BCS. Only in College Football.
Damaramu 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 This is all based off of this year. This is an annual thing. We're not going over the era. Maybe if we were looking for the best team since 2000 in ever poll then yeah USC would be #1. Ah who am I fooling. Even I can't argue to justify this. But don't use the rankings as an era thing. It should be based off this year.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Not that it's likely to happen or anything, but can you imagine the media firestorm that would come about if Va. Tech ended up passing USC for #2 in the BCS rankings. If the undefeated defending champs got left out of the "title game", it might be about the only thing that could possibly steer college football toward a playoff. The Hokies still have Boston College, Miami, and likely Florida State on the schedule, so they have plenty of room to improve on their computer ranking. Meanwhile, Alabama also has plenty of room to improve with games against LSU, Auburn, and (likely) Georgia. If Virginia Tech could improve to #1 in all of the computer rankings, and Alabama could move up to #3 in most of them, it actually might be enough to move USC out. Of course, VT would have to improve a little bit in the polls, steal a few votes away from Texas and USC here and there, but it's not impossible. I'd still say there's at least a 95% chance that USC and Texas will end up meeting in the championship game if they win out, but just the possibility that the champs could get left out kind of keeps things interesting. USC still has 3 ranked games left, including one with undefeated UCLA, and has 2 previously played teams (Oregon and Notre Dame) who may not lose again this year. Not relevant to this year's rankings, except for the last 7. #2 in the BCS. Only in College Football. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You make it sound like getting back to #1 is some insurmountable obstacle. The BCS rankings by their very nature are going to be volatile until the season ends. Really they shouldn't release them at all until the end of the year but if they didn't all sorts of people would calculate them anyway, or get mad because they arn't available. And really, there is no difference between being #1 and #2.
slabinskia 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 I don't see USC or TEXAS losing so it doesn't really matter who is #1 or #2.The team I feel sorry for is Va Tech. They will most likely go undefeated and be left out just like Auburn last year.Of course that is old news but it is still unfortunate for them. As for Cal and Fresno State, they may be ranked in the polls, but Cal's in the Top 25 in only one computer ranking, and Fresno State's not in the BCS Top 25 at all, so I can't even see if they're ranked in the computer rankings or not. The late-season game against UCLA should be enough to keep USC ahead of VT, but it's far from a given that they'll regain first from Texas.

That would put an end to all this "Texas RULZ!!!" talks. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, if you're talking about the Rose Bowl, then I can see it, but it would take a miracle for Texas to lose in the rest of the regular season. They've already played the three next-best teams in the conference and they beat them all handily. Their toughest test over the rest of the season will probably be against Missouri or Colorado for the Big XII Championship in a rematch of a game they already won. Texas A&M isn't even close to being good enough to test the Longhorns right now. In fact, I'd be surprised if anyone comes within two TDs of Texas before the Rose Bowl. USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Yeah perhaps. If it comes down to USC/Texas, so be it. I'm fine with another squash. (And yes I'm being painfully cocky on purpose). I really think OU's team last year was much better than Texas this year.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Texas jumps USC for a week cause they beat Texas Tech. That's it really. If USC beats UCLA, they go back to the top of the board. They shouldn't have jumped them period but oh well. It's college football. I gave up on an actual National Champion years ago.
razazteca 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Texas over THE Ohio State > USC over Notre Dame? Or is it the blowout victory over Texas Tech that put them over the top to #1?
Guest Report post Posted October 24, 2005 I think Va. Tech is losing to Boston College and Texas will lose to Texas A&M. The early BCS standings don't mean shit.

Hell we were very close to having a Texas/OU title game! USC played close with UCLA and if they had won and Auburn had lost to Tennessee then it was possible that OU and Texas would've played against each other. That would've been weird. Wilbon just said it. The rankings and national titles are not lifetime achievement awards. If we were going off of what you did since like 2000 then USC, OU, and Miami would be 1, 2, and 3. USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Hey hey now. Texas is the most superior team in the entire history of NCAA football. They have never choked in big time games. They have never lost a single game in their school history. They have the next Dan Marino as their QB. They are pure gods! They deserve the #1 ranking! The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 As I know nothing about college football, but some about music, I select my allegiances by way of fight songs. Thus, I like USC, and am thoroughly outraged by this injustice. (P.S.: Notre Dame's is okay, but I'm not Catholic, and the way all Catholics act as if its THEIR team as the Mormons do with BYU makes it a turn-off.) Or something. USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 What has USC done? They have sucked in every game this year. I mean those guys, they can't seem to find the end zone. They lose every game. Matt Leinart is the equivalent of Jim Zorn. Reggie Bush is Ki-Jana Carter reincarnated. They clearly need to be ranked #117th!

cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 Just wondering but why is Texas considered such hot shit by these computers? Yeah they beat an Ohio St. team that's really not that likely to win the Big 10. And beat an insanely overrated Texas Tech. Add that to the Big 12 being generally crap this year and why would they even make the BCS title game over an undefeated Va Tech? If Va Tech beats down BC, Miami, and then FSU to run the table in the ACC that's quite the resume. Beating WVU in Morgantown is pretty much the same as Texas over Ohio St (#17 vs. 13 in the BCS...and Va Tech's win was far more dominant). The Big 12 is extremely down this year. There are maybe 2 legit top 25 teams in the conf. (no, Colorado isn't worth a shit). The ACC has 4 teams in the top 15. The SEC has 5 top 25 teams, so if someone goes unbeaten out of that conf. they really should get a reward. I think the SEC's main problem is that most of the games are ugly brawls like that Bama/Tenn game the other day. Not very aesthetically pleasing.

Damaramu 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2005 Wow......overreact much? Read baseball threads much? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually no. Anyway does it really matter if USC and Texas are 1 or 2? If both win out then they'll play each other in the title game. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> What if Tech beats #13 BC this week? And #6 Miami the week after? We've got five weeks until USC faces UCLA, a game that could decide who plays in the National Championship. If USC can hold off Tech until that meeting, they've playing for the berth. But the point is, where does Tech end up after next week's game? If Tech gets on the inside track, does USC leap-frogging them after a UCLA win seem fair?
