Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2005 So after 6 months of my store not having a single authority figure we got a new manager about 2 months ago and already the staff is sick of him for a few reasons, the biggest being that he's always in the store. Constantly. On his days off. Coming back in when he's done for the day. He's a full-time employee which means he's contractually obligated to work 40 hours a week. If he choses to work more I suppose he can. But two weeks ago an employee of ours that used to work for a law firm mentioned that there is some kind of law that prevents somebody from going completely balls-out with their hours. The worst part about all of this is that every time he comes back in it's never for anything nescessary. He just dicks around on the computer, reading e-mails, fixing the shelves etc. Two weeks ago from today was one of his days off and he came in THREE TIMES for nothing. Last week alone he probably logged well over 12 hours of extra labour with him doing nothing for it. As a manager when you do that you send two messages to your staff: A) I don't trust you B) I'm terrible with my time-management so I need to stay around much longer to finish the work. Anybody that has any expierience with this sort of thing: What did you do? The other supervisor at our store and our assistant, along with myself are going to sit him down and let him know that we have an issue with what he's doing, we're just trying to think of the best way to approach the situation. BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2005 Is he hourly or salaried? If he is salaried, then they can work pretty much whatever they want or what the company wants them to do and overtime laws don't apply to them.

Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2005 my boss (the manager of the entire distribution center I work at) is a chronic whork-a-holic...dude easily puts in close to 80 hours a week (including Saturdays and Sundays, which we usually have off unless really busy)...it's nuts...and you can tell it wears on him...none of us on the management staff can fathom why he does it... Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2005 As BruiserKC said, he can do whatever he wants if he's salaried. But, if he's hourly, the company can prevent him from doing that. The only way the government comes into the picture, though, is if he's forced to work the overtime.
Annabelle 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2005 my goodness, what a mindless question/complaint. having him around must really bust your balls, huh? say you work 30 hours/week and he's around all those 30 hours - is that any different than mostly everyone else who works full time 9-5 mon-fri with their boss for *gasp* all 40 hours/week? i don't get why it concerns you so much. maybe i am making a mountain of a molehill. and yes, if he's salaried (which most bosses are) dude could work 24 hours/day 365 days/year if he's so inclined. maybe you should get a telemarketing job at home where bosses aren't around. Failed Bridge 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2005 you don't do telemarketing at home unless you do like Avon. Normally you sit in a cubicle with many other people in their own cubicles calling people that don't want you calling them and asking them to come down and talk to people that make more than you about various products. Dispatcher for a Phone Sex network does their work from home. I know a girl who's mom does that. She works like 4 hrs a day connecting different people to phone sex operators from the comfort of her own home.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted November 1, 2005 Depends on the place. I've been obligated to limit employees to no more than a couple hours overtime per week. I can work 15 or 16 hours every day if I wanted to, provided I'm not operating a machine for over 14 of them. There isn't anything you can do from your position, though. kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2005 He'll probably get burned out in a few more months. And if he's salaried, he can come in whenever. Thank God I work for an hourly wage...

But I'm answering that question for myself because it's you.
