TNA Announces Multi-Year Video Game Deal

Recommended Posts

Well I guess Midway announced the deal, but the point is that it's official, so sayeth PWI:

Midway Games issued the following press release this morning:

Midway Acquires Exclusive Worldwide Videogame Rights to TNA Wrestling

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 7, 2005--Midway Games Inc. (NYSE:MWY), a leading interactive entertainment software publisher and developer, today announced that it has signed an exclusive worldwide, multi-year agreement with TNA Entertainment to publish videogames based on Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. Under the terms of the agreement, Midway has the rights to develop and publish games for the console, handheld and PC platforms. The first TNA Wrestling product is scheduled to ship in 2007 for current generation game systems.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling is the future of sports entertainment. TNA iMPACT! airs exclusively on SpikeTV on Saturdays from 11 PM-midnight ET/PT with an encore on Mondays at midnight ET/PT. In addition to the weekly show, TNA Wrestling also produces a monthly pay-per-view special where its top stars such as Jeff Jarrett, AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, Kevin Nash and Rhino compete in, above and beyond the signature six-sided ring.

"TNA Wrestling is one of the fastest growing and most exciting forms of sports entertainment available today," said David F. Zucker, president and CEO, Midway. "It's fast, powerful and cutting-edge in both presentation and style. We are very pleased to be working with TNA and look forward to leveraging our expertise in the fighting game genre to create the most compelling wrestling experience yet."

"Our brand of wrestling is perfectly suited to videogames and Midway is the perfect company to create them," said Dixie Carter, president, TNA Entertainment. "We are very excited about this collaboration and the opportunity to expand TNA Wrestling to a new medium."

About TNA iMPACT! (working title)

TNA iMPACT! is set to be the most complete wrestling videogame to date. Featuring top talent such as Raven, Jeff Jarrett, Monty Brown, Rhino, Christopher Daniels, Jeff Hardy, AJ Styles and more, TNA iMPACT! will deliver all of the excitement and action of the top-rated weekly television show.

This statement is confusing. Current-generation...in 2007? Does that mean they're gonna develop them for the ps2/xbox/gamecube in 2007, if so those games are gonna sell like crap being made for systems on the way out.

Or do they mean current generation AS OF 2007 (which means xbox360,ps3,revolution)

A year and a half to develop a video game?

Holy shit that's a lot of development.

And I hope it's not for the PS3. Unless those prices are down about 200 dollars or more by then, I doubt I'll see this game.

Hell, Gamecube has been on its way out now for the better part of a year, and the Xbox will likely be out of fashion by then for the most part, although developers will probably continue to support the PS2.

A year and a half for development wouldn't normally be that bad, and it'll probably be closer to a year or so only if they release it at the beginning of the year. Though from all accounts, they've already brought in people for some work on the game, so maybe it's more a safe, generous estimation. It at least assures they'll put some effort into making a good game instead of rushing it out. Then again, Anchor had as long to develop each of the Raw games for Xbox, and look at how those turned out.

The problem is that year-year and a half takes place during the console change. I doubt a great deal of gamers will be making a major shift to the next gen that quickly, or at least not enough for Midway to consider releasing it only on those systems. I should hope not.

Yeah.

Okay...here's what I'm wondering...how will this game rank, quality-wise, to the wrestling titles we have out there now?

Yukes has proven it can provide decent pickup-and-play games with fine graphics that leave much to be desired for the hardcore gamer, but are perfect for those that wish to just play a game for fun and not obsess over it.

Aki is the team behind the best gameplay in wrestling games ever, and now they do the EA Def Jam games, which are both better than any WWE title since Aki held the license for the non-PS games due to how in-depth the gameplay is. They took a big leap with the control changes for FFNY that they hadn't done before, and it paid off in some eyes, but failed in others.

Midway did Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game in the mid-90's for PlayStation, and while it's still a fun game to play, it wasn't terribly good. It's pretty lame, redundant, and over-the-top goofy, but a good pickup-and-play game.

Hrmmm...Yukes vs. Aki vs. Midway...this should be interesting in late '06/early '07.

That's the most meaningless thing ever. Since there's no way they've started work on animating the actual game, those are just hastily thrown together pre-rendered 3d graphics.

But I guess it shows they're gonna push the game :)

At least they'll push it. If the graphics in the game are anything close to that, we're in for a visual treat...so let's hope the gameplay is, at the very least, passable.

,Nov 11 2005, 11:38 PM]uhhhhhh who the fuck is that guy on the left? surely not jeff hardy!

Yup, Jeff used so much paint that he actually turned into a black man.

Great. Maybe now he'll be able to dance.

Or sing. Cause he damn sure can't do that now.

Don't mock the man. Alley cats from coast to coast make the journey to TNA take pointers from Jeff.
