College Hoops: November

Recommended Posts

And thus, it is upon us. College Basketball is back, and the Season begins today. Now I know it may be November, but now is a good a time as any to start to the Season with the monthly threads for November and December (weekly or bi-weekly threads will begin in Janurary).

The Curtain Jerker tonight is a Contest between Syracuse and Bethune Cookman, which also happens to be part of the first round of the Coaches Vs. Cancers Classic.

So there you have it. I'm going to try to get a November National TV Schedule Up soon.

Exit Gammons...Enter Vitale

Yeah, and since Duke is supposed to be so damn good...He's going to suck and ride that Cock all damn year.

I think everyone who is not a Duke Fan is going to want to kick him in his face before the year is out.

So it'll be just like every other year with Dukie V.

My guess for the Final Four: Duke, Michigan State, Kentucky and West Virginia as the dark horse pick

With the killer recruiting class UNC has coming in 2006 - I only have to get through this year before they return to glory.

All that matters this year - a win over Duke.

Yay... love college hoops.

Should be more exciting now there's some teams locally worth a damn for me. :)

Shame that the ESPN video game is postponed until next week. :(

And so in the Coaches Vs. Cancer Tournament First Round.

Cornell goes past The Red Flash of St Francis Pa. 75 - 54

Syracuse bops past the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman 68 - 37

Syracuse and Cornell will play tomorrow in the Second Round, right on the Ocho (ie. ESPN U)

UK plays NAIA powerhouse and my alma mater Georgetown College tonight in an exhibition game. If it wasn't for school, I would be at Rupp tonight. Of course, this is only exciting for central Kentucky (mainly Georgeotwn grads).

Yeah, Cornell!

Actually, we suck every year but our school paper predicted us to win the Ivy League championship this year - which would be a first. They aren't afraid to admit that we are going to suck either - so I think we might have a decent team this year. I would love to see the Big Red get whomped by Duke in the first round of the tournament.

Cornell acutally gave Syracuse a game tonight. They only lost by 5. And from all reports, it seems like "The Big Red" played a great game. This could be the beginning of something good for them.

And it means that Syracuse definetely has to step it up in the Garden, or they're screwed.

I hope Michigan St. doesn't go back to the FF. God they are just so stale and boring. Almost as dull as Wisconsin. If it's someone from the Big 10 and it isn't IU, go away.

UK looked pretty solid last night and man this JC transfer Sims looks awesome for them. If they can just get Rondo and Sparks to quit turning the ball over they'll be harsh.

I'm looking forward to the Guardians Classic tourney once the jobbers are gone and we get to the projected 4 of UK, Texas, WVU, and Iowa. I'm kinda wanting UK vs. WVU in the finals, or if not there in the 3rd place game. Is it just me or is Texas insanely overrated? They lost to friggin Nevada in the first round and are now #3?

On a website I saw they were highlighting games throughout the season to watch, they listed Duke/Texas as a possible National Championship preview...so I would say Texas is overrated.

Oh? You mean this.

I saw this too, and it had me go "Oh Really?" ("O Rrly?" to all of you owl fan folks.) One of these isn't making the title game, but they also said that Wake Forest Vs. Illinois was also a National Title Preview Game, and look how that ended up.

I do like that they gave some props to Northern Iowa and Old Dominion who are both supposed to be really good this year.

Does anyone else think Virginia Tech is overrated? I've seen them on some Top 25 lists, along with Miami.

Not sure what to think of Arizona yet. When they are highly touted, they usually disappoint and when they have no real expectations, they come out and shine brightly.

I am dying for Arkansas to do something. I'm just glad college hoops are back though.

Speaking of Arkansas why would UK vs. ARK be a major game? Arkansas won't be all that much, UK should win by double digits there.

I'm curious to see what Memphis does this year. They are ranked quite high for a team that didn't even make the tourney last year. I know they have the talent to be a top 20 team, but are their heads on straight?

They had to include a SEC Conference game? If anything it should be the game between UK and Alabamba, because it'll just show the gap between Kentucky and the rest of that Conference.

As for Memphis. I can see them justifying that ranking for these reasons.

1) Killer Freshman Class.

2) Killer Back Court

3) Calipari

4) Killer Schedule, which they could pull a UNLV and win through most of it, while winning the 17 games (14 conference, 3 Tournament) without anything close to a loss.

The big question will be chemistry, and if they're mature enough. Memphis' eyes got far too big for their stomachs last year, and that was painfully obivious after the losing record going into CUSA play.

Texas for some reason is listed as the best team in the Big XII when OU did better last year and returns more talent from than last years squad. And OU is the defending Big XII co-champ.

I never thought I'd see the days in Norman again when basketball is doing better than football.

I'm with you on that. I don't see why Texas is so hyped considering they lost the 1st round to Nevada and don't really have a drastically different team. I also like OU over them in the Big 12, at least they are tough. Not particularly skilled, but tough.

Anybody think Bobby Knight might get past Dean Smith this year? He's averaging 22 wins a year at TX Tech and needs 25. If not this year, early next year.

And by the way Memphis won't remotely go undefeated even in the shitty CUSA. I think UAB will be decent enough to beat them at least once. And hasn't UTEP made the tourney the past couple years too? I think they might beat Memphis.

Well see the thing about OU is that they couldn't shoot the ball last year but they were tough under the basket iwth Taj Gray and Kevin Bookout. This year they've supposedly recruited some JUCO players and some freshmen that can shoot the ball.

But Sampson's mindset is defense so expect the games to still be slow.

For some perverse reason I'd like to see a UK vs. OU game, just to see how vicious it would be and how bad the shooting would be. It might be an intense, entertaining game on some levels, but not an artistic masterpiece.

That said, Tubby is allegedly going to let Rondo run and gun this year. Which means UK might actually break 70 points in all the games.

I was gonna say something to refute that, but then I looked up the stats. In Pitino's last year, they didn't break seventy 4 times. Last year they didn't break seventy 12 times. Yeah, maybe the faster pace might make for higher scoring games. I can see this strategy backfiring in terms of turnovers, which is not a good thing.

I saw a bit of this in that G'Town exhibition. Rondo is often out of control and prone to turnovers, ditto Sparks. I keep hearing about Rondo being so awesome but I've yet to see the following from him: 1. A decent jumper. 2. Ability to control himself and not be out of control.

Oh and Alro, UK might not have broken 70 a few times in Pitino's last year due to Derek Anderson's injury.

Sims was the star of the Georgetown game. I'm hoping he looks that good all year.

I wasn't using those stats to show that even under Pitino, UK didn't crack 70 a few times. I meant that as you are correct. Tubby ball isn't geared towards high scoring. Doing the opposite of Tubby ball with Tubby Smith as head coach has me a little worried this year.

The Preseason NIT tommorrow begins tommorrow. Here's the 1st Round match-ups:

Boston Univ at #1 Duke

Manhattan at Seton Hall

Sam Houston State at Missouri

Drexel at Princeton

Miami of Ohio at #15 Alabama

Wisconsin-Milwaukee at #12 Memphis

Army at Temple

New Mexico State at #19 UCLA

You look at the top half of the bracket and then look at the bottom and the cynic in me figures they wanted to make sure Duke is in the final.

That's the BRACKET?!?

What the fuck is that. It's Duke, the 4 mid/low major job bitches, former cinderella darlings in Princetion, Mahattan and the 15th place Big East Team on the top bracket. Then it's the Mid-Major Nightmares, the Patroit Leauge Suck Brigrade, the SEC's joke #2 team, Memphis, Temple, and the question mark in UCLA.

Wow...I've never seen such a Preseason NIT field so shitty. It's almost like they're feeding DUKE 4 wins.

Well, Alro...UK put up a mighty 71 tonight so the running and gunning is apparently not in the cards yet. It was just against some jobber though, as is the next game. We'll see what they can do next week against Iowa and then either TX/WVU.

Compare that shitty NIT bracket to the swank Maui bracket with Gonzaga, Maryland, UConn, Kansas, etc.

Yuck, the NIT tourney is ugly this year.

But, I always love the Maui tournament. Gives me the first taste of college hoops, and the first feeling that the holidays are here.

Your hate of MSU is what is stale and boring, have you even WATCHED them play? All they do is push, push, push. I don't see how that style of basketball is boring.
