Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 Either "Far Away Eyes" or "Going Home."
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 29, 2005 Author Report Posted November 29, 2005 In a similar vein, "Angie" is the most overrated in the canon of classic Stones songs. And sometimes I don't like "You Can't Always Get What You Want," but other times I do. Mostly, I hate the choral opening. (Also, I like "Salt of the Earth," except when the choir comes in at the end. Not that I hate choirs always—though I usually do—I've long enjoyed the Blur song "Tender," for instance.)
Henry Spencer Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 I don't know about worst, but Wild Horses is the most overrated.
Slayer Posted November 29, 2005 Report Posted November 29, 2005 I've never liked "You Can't Always Get What You Want"
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 "Wild Horses" is the only one I find unlistenable in the given timeframe.
Guest Coffey Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 I hate Angie and Wild Horses but I'm not going to look up what year they came out.
Henry Spencer Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 Ruby Tuesday. you is on drugs, man Seconded. Fuck, Ruby Tuesday is one of the best.
Murmuring Beast Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 'Start Me Up' is my favourite Stones song.
Guest Anticrombie Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 I hate Angie and Wild Horses but I'm not going to look up what year they came out. Both before 1978, so they count.
Annabelle Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 'Start Me Up' is my favourite Stones song. after '78 & easily the worst stones radio song. made those fuckers dead in my eyes after that shit.
Red Baron Posted December 1, 2005 Report Posted December 1, 2005 Under My Thumb, Honky Tonk Woman, Ruby Tuesday
Annabelle Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Under My Thumb, Honky Tonk Woman, Ruby Tuesday what? i agree on honky tonk. but ruby tuesday & under my thumb are easily two fo the best. odd. just odd.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 "Ruby Tuesday" and "Under My Thumb" are two of my favorites too. I also like "Honky Tonk Woman," but won't really fight its inclusion here, especially cause I don't really have a vote of my own. I probably should listen to some of the pre-Beggars Banquet albums for that. "Play With Fire" is kinda boring, I guess, and a lot of their better songs achieve the same things in more impressive fashion.
Annabelle Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 the stones were the best with brian jones. i know i am excluding the work from exile & sticky fingers but tis how i feel.
The Czech Republic Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 I thought everyone thought they were never the same after Brian Jones. I'm not certain; the Stones are a band I'm not well-versed in.
Red Baron Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Under My Thumb has this nice mellow feel, and a groovy bass line, but is boring after the first minute. Ruby Tuesday sounds like a Beatles rip-off song at best.
The Czech Republic Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 "Ruby Tuesday" is a very good song, though.
Annabelle Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 the stones aftermath, between the buttons, & satanic majesties had some weird instrumentalism and such that the beatles didn't have. i read somewhere the list of exotic instruments that jones played during his tenure. and most people, i've always figured at least, have always enjoyed the beggars banquet to exile string of albums with mick taylor
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 5, 2005 Report Posted December 5, 2005 I love "Under My Thumb" and am indifferent to "Ruby Tuesday." "Paint it Black" is my favorite Stones song.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 6, 2005 Author Report Posted December 6, 2005 Goats Head Soup—the album that followed Exile on Main Street—is generally considered where the Stones' decline began. I rather like that album, though, even if it does contain "Angie." Some Girls, from '78, is held as the last great Stones record (hence why I chose that year as the cutoff). It's also their first studio outing with Mick Taylor's replacement and to this day current member Ron Wood, which isn't to say Wood had anything to do with the Stones turn to sucking. For what it's worth, I like "Start Me Up," overexposure aside. 1981's Tattoo You, the album which that song is from, also has "Waiting on a Friend," which is a really, really good song. The rest of the album is chaff aside from maybe "Hang Fire" and "Slave."
Giuseppe Zangara Posted December 6, 2005 Author Report Posted December 6, 2005 honky tonk woman I'd like to add I vastly prefer the acoustic redo on Let It Bleed.
Ravenbomb Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 When did they do Prodigal Son? If it's before 78, it's my pick
Guest Anticrombie Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 It's on Begger's Banquet from 1968. I actually like all of Begger's Banquet, but if I had to pick a weak song it would probably be "Factory Girl". I always wished that "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was on the album. As for worst songs, I never thought "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" was all that great of a cover; "If You Really Want to Be My Friend", "Can You Hear the Music?", and "Dance Little Sister" have stupid lyrics and could be improved upon, and at least 7 minutes should be cut from "Going Home". "Sing This All together" can be annoying sometimes, but I think Their Satanic Majesties Request is actually one of the best Stones albums, though I haven't heard Sgt. Pepper's... yet.

I always thought Ronnies first studio album with the Stones was "Black and Blue" which was out before "Some Girls", no?
