I was wondering how many people here are fans of players but not the team they play for?

Like for example. I don't like the Chargers at all. But I like LT and Drew Brees and I enjoy watching them play. But if the Chargers didn't have either player I wouldn't watch a minute of a Chargers game.

Same with the Pistons. I love that starting 5 but I could care less about the actual Pistons themselves.

Does anyone else get this? Do you root for the team b/c you like the players? I usually do if they aren't playing my team but like I said. If the team lost those players I would care less.

Ever had it grow into actual fandom? That's how I became and Eagles fan. I was such a mark for Cunningham and it grew.

I can buy it for an individual player, especially in a big-roster sport like football, but loving the starting 5 of a basketball team and saying that you're not a fan of the team is kinda silly. I get that you're not a fan of the Pistons historically, but you love all the starters, you're a fan of the Pistons.

Damn your speed, Czech Republic! Damn it all.

I was also a huge Cunningham mark, but kinda liked the Eagles, because I felt sorry for them. Philly fans blow, and Vets Stadium was the pits.

Other ones:

A-Rod - Yankees.

Charlie Weis - Notre Dame.

Julius Jones - Cowboys & Notre Dame.

Chris Chambers - Dolphins.

Mookie Blaylock - Oklahoma.

Yeah but if that starting 5 were broken up I would care less about the Pistons. I like them now but if the Wallace's were to move on or something I wouldn't be saying I like the Pistons.

But the Celtics I'll like no matter who is putting on the green jersey(well as long as it's not Kobe).

I loved going to the Vet for games, the Linc is too corporate for my taste I feel...

This really applies to the NBA, I think. Allen Iverson is actually my favorite NBA player. I love watching him play, though I'm really apathetic toward the Sixers. I just like watching the highlights at the end of the night of a Sixers game, and watching him move at a completely different speed than the rest of the court most of the time. Great player. Also a big fan of Dwayne Wade (I'm getting the new black and white Heat jersey of his -> here), and I'd probably like the hometown Heat if only they didn't have two of the players in the NBA I like the least playing center.

I don't know about the stadium, but the field there made me cringe. I'm amazed there wasn't more Wendell Davis situations.

Mookie Blaylock - Oklahoma.

Billy Tubbs is on the radio during basketball season and he mentions Mookie like every other sentence.

That's somewhat surprsing since Mookie is a known druggie, now.

I just loved watching him play. And he was jobbed out of the national title in '88.

There were actually a lot less injuries due to the turf once the NexTurf surface got put in during the 2001 season. Of course that one preseason game got cancelled because of it, but that was the first one with the new turf...

Well he doesn't talk about Mookie now. He speaks fondly of Mookie from then.

Steve Yzerman. My favourite hockey player of all time. I desperately wanted him to go to Edmonton this year but I could dream. Nobody impresses me more than him, not even Gretz. When this guy is retiring (which is rumoured to be sometime this season) i'll cry.

I thought I was a Redsox fan but when Pedro left I just kinda stopped caring.

NFL: Adam Archuleta, Clinton Portis and Shaun Taylor (I do almost like the Redskins but probably because of them), Byron Leftwich

MLB: Pedro Martinez, Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr.

NBA: Allen Iverson, Dwayne Wade

It just so happens that some of my favorite players (Sheed, Rip, and Chauncey) ended up on the Detroit Pistons which is a team I gave a rats ass about before.

Is this really that uncommon? I can think of dozens of players that I like, even though I'm either apathetic about their teams or out-and-out dislike the teams. I'd say that there's a player on almost every NHL team that I like, even though I don't like their teams.

Conversely, there's players that play for teams that I really, passionately root for that I don't like.

The first one that springs to mind is Roberto Luongo of the Panthers. I'm apathetic towards the franchise since they've sucked hard for almost a decade now, but he's the lone bright spot for the team save flashes of brilliance from their really young guys. He's basically the only reason that I watch Panthers games on FSN, knowing that he's as good as gone already.

Also, I like Anson Carter on every team he plays for.

Seconded.

Also Matsui and Favre.

Whoa, whoa, back up. This needs more attention. You wouldn't cheer for the Celtics -- a team you supposedly love right now -- just because they signed Kobe Bryant?

We need someone to spell out the complete rules of sports fandom.

I would hope the team still scored and won but I'd hope that it wasn't because of Kobe. I hate Kobe so much that I just can't back anything that he's involved in. The Celtics would have turned their back on me if they had Kobe.
