Who came up with that gimmick/angle?

I was thinking about gimmicks/angles that I grew up with in the 80's and early 90's and sometimes I just wonder....who came up with that and why? Why did this guy get that gimmick?

I was wondering if anyone else wondered that about certain gimmicks or angles and wanted to wonder aloud and see if anyone had any ideas?

 

Like who came up with the Million Dollar Man for Ted Dibiase and why?

 

I have others but I just have to gather my thoughts but I thought I'd throw that one out there. It was always an interesting character but I never had any idea who came up with it and why.

Great topic. Sadly I dont really know alot of stories except that the Stone Cold gimmick was proposed by Steve Austins wife when his "ringmaster" thing failed. Dunno if his wife at that time was Debra though.

I think Austin's wife at that time was still Lady Blossom (forget her real name), but she was his manager when he first debuted in WCW in the early '90s.

To add on to this thread, I always thought it was hillarious how many people took credit for the nWo angle (from when it originally started). I mean, I've heard it credited to, or the following people take credit for it:

 

- Eric Bischoff

- Paul Orndorff

- DDP

- Kevin Nash and Scott Hall

- Dusty Rhodes

 

Probably forgetting a few as well.

The IWC came up with the JBL character a long time before it was introduced. Even down to such details as changing his hometown to New York.

 

Of course, Vince is a huge Dallas mark and probably wanted to create a JR Ewing gimmick for a long time.

I don't think I really want to know what goes on in Vince's dreams, although Goldust being in them seems about right.

I read somewhere that part of the reason that the "million dollar man" gimmick was created was because Donald Trump was very heavily featured in the media at the time (87/88), and this gave vince the idea for the character.

Another one I was thinking of, after Edge mentioning him on RAW Monday night, Terry Gordy. In '96 he came in to feud with the Undertaker as the Executioner. Wouldn't it have been ok if he had just come in as Terry Gordy (it's not like he was an obscure name in wrestling at that point)? Or was it his idea to put on a mask, since he was going to end up jobbing a decent amount? Did Vince just think it would be a good idea for him to have that gimmick, or what?

Maybe they didn't want to tarnish Gordy's name by having him put on stinker matches. Stick him under the mask and protect his name while he collects a few last major paychecks.

I think that was sort of the idea. If he somehow regained form and started putting on good matches, you could always unmask him.

Jeannie Clark is her name, she was Chris Adams ex-wife (and was introd to wrestling after Austin turned on Adams, who was his trainer and mentor down in Texas)

 

as for the stone cold name, Austin saw a HBO special on a killer called The Iceman and that made him think of a new gimmick of being a cold-blooded heel with no mercy. thats when his wife suppposably said that. Though for some reason I swear I can remember one announcer (maybe Vince) saying that he was a stone cold person (this was during the time when he was still the ringmaster), Hell they made no big deal just one week on RAW they called him Stone Cold Steve Austin (the first time they mentioned his actual name in WWF since before he was just "The Ringmaster")

Actually, they mentioned his name as Steve Austin while he was still The Ringmaster at the 1996 Royal Rumble.

Well if he went to "The U" the self absorbed athlete probably was an extension of him somewhat.
