2005-06 MLB Offseason Thread

Considering a recent message board hoax (Manny for Abreu) threw everyone into a panic for four days, I doubt the rumor mill has any plans of slowing down.

At this point I wish Tejada, Ramirez, and/or Abreu would get traded just to end all the speculation. Rumors are fun to debate early in the offseason, but enough is enough.

It's all that fucking Boston rush and it'll get even worse with New England eliminated since the Pats in would distract some of them. Comcast Sports Net stopped covering it after interviewing Miggy and the GM. If he's dealt, they'll report it then. Cause soon we are going to hear like Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina to the Orioles for Tejada with Miggy moving to second or some shit. It's gotta stop before the Yankee rumors get involved.

WEEI said Manny will go to Milwaukee for Bill Hall and prospects and then they'll be sent to the Angels for Dallas McPherson and then he'll be traded to the Nationals for John Patterson and then they'll be traded back to Boston for Trot Nixon. I think.

30-TEAM TRADE LET'S DO THIS SHIT

WEEI has reported the following rumor:

Boston will trade Manny to the Cubs for Mark Prior, Boston trades Prior to the White Sox for Contreras, Contreras will be traded to Tampa Bay for Aubrey Huff; Contreras will be dealt from Tampa to the Marlins for prospects. The Marlins subsequently send Contreras to the Braves for more prospects, which doesn't make sense. The Braves will trade Chipper Jones to the Mariners for Felix Rodriguez, who will be traded to the Mets for some white guy. The Mets will trade Cliff Floyd to the Dodgers for Nomar, Dodgers send Bill Mueller to the Angels for the Molina they didn't get rid of. Molina goes to the Padres for Giles, Giles is dealt to the A's for a so-called "hot prospect" that it will turn out has never even played baseball...looks like Beane got the better of the deal again. Giles is traded to the Yankees for cash to build a park that Al Davis can't fuck up. Yankees trade Damon to the Orioles for Kevin Millar, Orioles send Tejada to the Brewers for everyone they picked up so far this offseason. Brewers trade Sheets to the Giants; the Giants trade Sheets to the Cardinals for Ponson.

okay someone else can do this, I'm going fucking nuts. Long story short I don't want to hear about the Red Sox until March.

Devil Rays may change their name in 2007.

http://www.sptimes.com/2006/01/15/Rays/Nam...e_big_cha.shtml

At the least, it seems likely the word "Devil" will be dropped, as it already is in some official team references. Then a decision has to be made whether to continue associating Rays with the sea creatures or to connect with the sun. Or there could be a new name, such as the Tampa Bay Tarpons.

Yes I read that as Tampons the first time too.

Most expansion teams use nicknames used previously in the minor leagues. The Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, Dallas/Ft. Worth Rangers, and Milwaukee Brewers were all minor league clubs before they were awarded MLB franchises. The Tarpons was the name of Tampa's entry in the Florida State League from 1957-87. They were a Phillies' affiliate until 1960, and a Reds' affiliate the rest of the way. The White Sox acquired the affiliate in 1988 and changed the team's name to the White Sox. The Tarpons was also used by the Ft. Lauderdale team from 1940-42. The Miami Sun Sox were a Dodgers' farm club from 1949-54. Several teams have also used the "Saints," including teams in St. Augustine and St. Petersburg.

The Sun Sox has a nice ring to it.

Which is what they'll be called in jokes which is why they should really not use it. Just call them the Tampa Bay Rays. You don't have to change anything and you can have a Salute to Ray Charles night once a year.

Tampa Bay Tarpons? Why not issue a press release that just says "PLEASE PEJORATIVELY REFER TO US AS THE TAMPONS, C'MON IT'LL BE FUNNY" in size 48 font?

No Sun Sox; that's three pairs of stockings in the AL.

I think it'd be a nice gesture to rename the city portion to St. Petersburg, since they were they ones that built the park for the White Sox, and then when they finally got their team, had to compromise with Tampa. I just don't like teams going by region or a state they share. (Tampa Bay, Carolina, New England, Texas, Florida, the proposed "Gulf Coast Saints.")

1. They only chose it because all the good names were hijacked by one of those "I register a million domain names and make you buy them from me" motherfuckers

2. Four words. It's cumbersome. I mean, there's a cadence to it, but it's long.

3. The name is now inextricably tied with futility.

4. Devil ray?

What exactly was wrong with the "Devil Rays"?

The word "Devil". They won't say it, but that's the problem. People don't like the word "devil", they think it's bad for the children and unholy.

Jeff Nelson signs a MLC with St. Louis:

Veteran reliever Jeff Nelson has agreed to terms with the St. Louis Cardinals on a minor-league contract that will pay him $800,000 if he makes the big-league club out of spring training, a baseball source told ESPN.com. Incentives could push the deal to more than $1 million.

It's an MLC, so no real harm done, though rolling the dice on two headcases in the pen (with Ponson) is a little unsettling. Nelson still strikes out almost a batter an inning, but he's going to have to cut down his walks before he becomes the next Al Reyes.
