I can admit he's very good, but he's one Toby Clark bounce from not winning a WS for the Sox, and being a failure. It would be reall short-sighted to consider him a failure for not winning a World Series. In the three years under his watch, he made the playoffs each time (something that they had never done before, ever) in a division with a team that sports a $200 million payroll. He also built up a farm system that was decimated into one of the best in baseball. He's easily one of the 5 best GMS in the game and the best overall option for the Sox organization. Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 I think it's interesting that the mindset of the Boston fan switches so drastically between Patriots and Red Sox as it pertains to player acquisition. With the Pats it's like "oh we don't need your big names! it's better to win with our system! anyone can be a winner with the Pats!" and then football season winds down and it's "I want Tejada! I want Lee! I want Unit! I want Gagne! I want Blalock!" I don't think that actual Sox fans think like this. This is more the media linking every big name to the Sox, because A. they have holes to fill (CF, SS), B. they have many tradeable parts (Ramirez, Wells, Arroyo, Clement, Mota), C. they have the payroll flexibility to take on a big name/contract and D. the FO is willing to gamble on a big deal Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2006 This one's probably a better move for the Red Sox than it is for Willie Harris, who could have parlayed his potential deal with the Rockies into inflated offensive numbers and extended his career by a year or two. If Harris could figure out a way to hit the ball out of the infield and boost his OBP just a little bit, he could be a very productive utility guy for the SAWX. The Coors effect doesn't work for everyone. Juan Pierre hit 3 home runs in two and a half seasons in Colorado, for example (and all three were on the road). Willie Harris is one of the least powerful hitters in the major leagues. Coors Field won't give him enough of a boost to reach the wall. Theo's newsworthy, but outside of that, what else have they actually done in the last two or three weeks? Willie Harris? It'd be different if they were making news that was, well, news. These mega-trades have never seemed at all possible and yet, we've had snaps where there'd be new ones or new twists to old ones. After a while, you'd just prefer them to be honest and say there's no news to report. I'd stop worrying about Manny, a player you guys still have, and focus on filling gaps at short and in center. The problem is that Willie Harris makes Juan Pierre look like Andruw Jones when it comes to the power department. Even if he wouldn't project to hit three home runs all year, there's a good chance that he could actually hit the ball into the outfield a few more times. And really, given his walk rate (assuming he keeps that up), that's all he would need to be a valuable player in Colorado - actually hit the ball, get on base, and then steal a few bags. As it is in Boston, he may be part of an interesting center field solution. Ultimately, the differences between him and Dave Roberts may not be as wide as people would think - platooning him with Adam Stern may be all that the SAWX can do, until they work out that mega-trade that lands them Carlos Beltran and Jim Edmonds. Anna Benson sounded off on the Mets for attempting to trade the right-hander in part because of her negotiations to pose nude for Playboy, according to a report on the New York Daily News' Web site in December. "We would never, ever have signed with New York if they had said they were going to trade us," Anna Benson told the paper at the time. "I was Miss [Politically Correct] for the Mets the entire time I was there. "I have no deal with Playboy," she added. Before the 2005 season began, the Mets signed Kris Benson to a three-year, $22.5 million deal after acquiring him from the Pirates in July 2004. Last season, Benson was 10-8 with a 4.13 earned-run average in 174 1/3 innings pitched. Julio made 67 appearances in 2005 for Baltimore, with a 5.90 ERA in 71 2/3 innings. And not a moment too soon. According to baseball sources, the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians have agreed in principle on a deal that will bring outfielder Crisp to the Sox in a multi-player trade. The deal was agreed upon several days ago under the condition that Cleveland be able to acquire another outfielder to replace Crisp, presumably Jason Michaels from the Philadelphia Phillies. There was some indication that the Phillies and Indians were hoping to complete the deal for Michaels as soon as last night. Cleveland was believed to be sending one of two relievers - left-hander Arthur Rhodes or right-hander Rafael Betancourt - to the Phillies in exchange for Michaels. This guy was a potential diamond in the rough during his days in LA, but he's really looked like a dud since the trade to Florida. I think that he crumbled under pressure in Florida to be "the guy".
