C Dubya 04 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2005 That's like saying that all of that terrible fucking techno shit sounds the same. Phish is labeled a jam band, as are the Allman Brothers, Gov't Mule, Disco Biscuits, MMW, Soulive, the Dead, Leftover Salmon etc. None of these bands sound even remotely the same. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2005 re: "jam bands" I agree that it is a horrible name, especially considering how different a lot of the groups lumped in are. No. This is an excuse by them. It's a perfectly accurate name that is recognized as so bad that even their listeners avoid using it at all costs, by disguising it using other, more amicable terms. Then the music starts and it's THE SAME SHIT. Yep...and Kylie Minogue and dieselboy are the same too...

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2005 There's something very funny about someone that borderline stalks Kylie Minogue say that 'jam bands' songs all sound the same. I don't know what the other jam band bashers listen to, so can't make comparable comments about your music. But, and just using Phish, if you're going to say "Carini", "Fast Enough For You", "Punch You In the Eye" and "Rift" all sound the same ... you're not really listening. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 22, 2005 nl5xsk1...its pretty obvious that the 'jam band' haters here have absolutely no idea what theyre talking about. The differences between bands in this 'genre' has already been addressed. The only thing that I can think of to explain it is that theyve never listened to any of the bands they hate and have based this weak opinion solely on what the friends they look upto have told them. Or maybe its just downs syndrome... Allman Bros are the original emo jam band...
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Haven't you realized that they're not grouped together based on style, they all sound bad. That's why I say they sound the same, because they all share the same intolerable nature. I understand why those who like them do (although sometimes it's a surprise from different people), but I sure as heckfire don't.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 'All sound bad' doesnt equal a genre...thats like people who dont like beats saying all 'techno' is the same because it all sounds bad...

snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 I dont like many of the bands in that 'genre' either...Grateful Dead, Allmans, and Govt Mule is about it... Im guessing the reason why I 'like jam bands' is because Ive been to the Bonnaroo fest the last 2 years...where Ive seen such great 'jam bands' as De La Soul, Matisyahu, Lake Trout, Primus, J5, X-ecutioners, Saul Williams, etc... Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 (edited) I'm personally a big fan of the Grateful Dead, and I think I can fairly say the Dead don't sound much like Dave Matthews. The Dead have a old school rock/country basis to their music I've never noticed in Matthews. Keep in mind, genres are funny things, though. Especially now, where people are more likely to cross over even the more defined genres I suppose I should correct myself, I'm hardly a Deadhead, but I have listened to a bunch of the better Dead shows and since Archive.org took the soundboards off for downloading I've been getting into Phil Lesh's band. I should also say that I respect that people don't like the Dead, but I can't see why you'd want to lose your hearing rather than listen to them. The Dead at least aren't THAT bad. Go check out archive.org or gdlive.com if you want to give them a little more time. Edited December 23, 2005 by Masked Man of Mystery

Mole 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Snuff. Jam bands aren't all the same, but the reason they call them "jam bands" is because they "jam-out." Stop hating and think about it for a second.
Art Sandusky 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 I know. It's the formula that kills it. Most of it would be pretty good if it were trimmed down.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Again...my previous band 'jammed out'...but to think we were a 'jam band' would be pretty stupid. Dur...they jam out so they is a jamband... I'll just continue to roll eyes at folks who cant listen to music without lumping into some ridiculous genre.

Just want to point out that Gov't Mule is the best thing going right now, and they are definitely not a "jam band". Fuck, they cover Black Sabbath, Temple of the Dog and have played with everyone. They're much more of a power trio (ala Cream, Hendrix Trio, etc.) then anything else, but due to Warren's affiliation with the Dead and Allman Brothers they are lumped in as a "jam band". Fuck that. nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Haven't you realized that they're not grouped together based on style, they all sound bad. That's why I say they sound the same, because they all share the same intolerable nature. I understand why those who like them do (although sometimes it's a surprise from different people), but I sure as heckfire don't. ^ Could be said for techno, metal, rap, R&B, boy bands, classic rock, etc. (and I include the "they all sound bad" and "intolerable nature" part of your post. 95% of the bands that fit into the genres I listed sound like utter shit to me, and to a lot of people.) Bands that sound the same (whether you like the type of music or not) are grouped together into a genre ... isn't that pretty much the definition of a musical genre? Kotz isn't going about it the right way, but he's basically right, some jam bands are unpleasant to listen to. Modified for accuracy. Not all jam bands are unpleasant to listen to. Some are, some aren't. RE: patchouli oil ... even a lot of fans of the genre hate the smell of that crap. It covers up the smell of pot well, and BO well, so a lot of girls that tour wear it. But it's not like all of us that dig the music or see the shows wear it, or even like it. RE: jamming out ... I even like it when bands that aren't jam bands 'jam out'. I have some awesome AC/DC bootlegs in which they jam out, and it sounds noticably better than the studio version. Even I'll admit that taking a 3 minute song and stretching it to 30 minutes can sound like shit ... but I also note that it doesn't ALWAYS sound like shit, and more often than not does NOT sound like shit. And for the few of us that actaully like the music: http://stash.nugs.net/stash.asp ... you can listen to individual songs, entire shows, or D/L entire shows, for a shit load of <gasp> jam bands. I don't care for a lot of them, but some are really good.
Masked Man of Mystery 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 What IS patchouli oil? Also, interesting to note, I've never heard the Dead or Phil Lesh(their bassist) with his band jam on certain songs, Dire Wolf in particular. I dunno if other jam bands have songs like that
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Patchouli is a scent/oil, that was worn by hippies back when hippies were really hippies. I think it was Indian/Eastern in origin. It's since become a largely inaccurate stereotype that everyone that goes to 'jam bands' shows reeks of it. Deadheads were pretty into pathouli back in the day, but I don't think the folks that goes to Phil & Friends shows do, and I know for a fact that Phish fans stopped wearing it in like '92. And I do think that certain bands have songs that they play 'straightforward' instead of jamming or improvising. Phish had a few of those (Mound, Sparkle). Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 The Stooges had some great jams, especially on "Fun House" but they aren't exactly in the same universe as the Grateful Dead "hippe" examples being used.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 23, 2005 Metallica jams out live as well...and Slipknot too, so they must be 'rap metal' and a 'jamband'...
Coffin Surfer 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2005 If that's a response to my post I don't know what the hell your talking about. "Fun House" is a studio album in which every song was pretty much a jam. I just brought them up to counter balance all the "hippie" examples but whatever.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2005 I was ading to the examples of bands that 'jam out' that, for various reasons, don't get lumped into the 'jamband' thing but according to the definitions here apparently should. How you took that as a negative response to you is pretty weird.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2005 Coheed & Cambria are an emo band. A good emo band with excellent music that has a nice dash of complexity with their catchy hooks, but a good part of their sound is derived from emo. ...and tell the fucking singer to remember that he has testicles. Special K 0 Report post Posted December 24, 2005 You could even call Sonic Youth a 'jam band' if your only cirteria is that they jam. No one's going to say they sound even remotely like the Dead or Phish.

Guest RadioBurning Report post Posted December 25, 2005 What's an Emo chord? E minor diminished? Three people will get that, and none of them will be emo listeners. Pretty accurate. I'm not much of an emo listener. I would say the "emo" chords are the 1 and b6 power chords, like every Hawthorne Heights song I've heard. And unlike some emo bands, they don't even bother to have one of their three guitarists play a melodic line.
