2006 NFL Off-Season

Hood, I found what looks like the complete QB Wonderlic score list, is that what you wanted?

Only two people have scored a perfect 50: Ryan Fitzpatrick who was drafted by the Rams last year and Pat McInally. From what I see, the lowest was a 6, by Vince Young the first time (He did get a 6, retook and got a 16, so he counts)and Oscar Davenport, North Carolina QB in 1999.

The site for all the QB scores:

I figured he did really well considering he's from Harvard.

I don't necessarily think that a low Wonderlic immediately equates to a bad NFL career (hello, Dan Marino) or a good score equates to a good career. But I do think that I'd be extremely nervous about implementing an extensive or difficult playbook with a QB that got a 6 on his first Wonderlic.

I think that most of the passing plays for Young will be simple 'check your first read. if covered, check your second read. if covered, run with it' plays. Not the toughest thing for an NFL defense to defend against.

The problem is Vince Young's passing ability doesn't really make the Wonderlic score any better. With Marino, you knew he could still make the tough throws and everything. With Young, you potentially have another Michael Vick on your hands... only dumber.

I heard a thing about Kliff Klingsbury (who's name I'm probably fucking up somehow, it doesn't look or sound right) ... he was the shit at Texas Tech but couldn't last at Pats camp because he was unable to deal with being under center. He could ONLY deal if he was in the shotgun. Didn't Young take most of his snaps from the gun?

Just another reason to be concerned, IMHO.

Wasn't Young accurate as hell in Texas? I could care less about his arm motion, as long as he can get it to his recievers.

This just in, the NFL and NFLPA talks of an extension of a salary cap have broken down. The owners and the players who represent the team could not come to an agreement. From what I'm hearing is that it is over revenue sharing, and the collective bargining agreement which is due to expire. The deadline was tomorrow at 4, and the owners will have a meeting in New York to figure it out. The players want a good amount of the revenue. We will have a cap for 2006, but if there is no deal, no 2007 cap. Teams like the Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, and the Green Bay Packers which have near 20 million or more in the cap could strike hard and fast. No possible delay in free agency, and football could become baseball in 2007. For teams that don't have one real owner (Packers) this could mean that the team could be sold.

Very interesting stuff, alot of stuff I really don't understand, so the the stuff that I know.

Like I said, the problem isn't with Youngs throwing motion.

Rich Gannon had a very similar throwing motion as Young's, and he won MVP of the leauge in 2002. The main problem is releasing it fast enough. I think going to the Titans will help him greatly, because McNair would be an awesome mentor to him, as they were similar QB's.

As for not being able to read a playbook, quit smoking crack. These's tests have nothing to do with understanding football and understanding compilcated plays.

Look for example Steve McNair. He scored low on that test also, then the Houston GM gave him a test, in what would he do in football situations on the field and McNair impressed so much he ended up drafting him.

The fact that this isn't getting more press and discussion is frightening. I don't think a lot of people understand the implications of the fallout of talks. The lack of a cap in 2007, plus an impending lockout in 2008 are frightening considering the overall popularity and success of the NFL at this point.

I actually think Vince Young will be the same type of player as Daunte Culpepper rather than Michael Vick.

The argument comparing Vince Young to Rich Gannon's throwing motion isn't exactly helping the Young argument. Gannon was pretty much back-up fodder and he needed Tim Brown and Jerry Rice to get to the MVP. Gannon had two good years with his motion and it took two of the NFL's best receivers on his team to get him to that season.

Young has two major things on his side. His speed and his height and those are HUGE to scouts when picking a QB.

The major questions about Vince Young remain the same. His throwing motion (delivery and speed of release), his intellgience (will be be smart enough to get down in the NFL), and how he adjusts to different systems but that one goes to all quarterbacks. If he has a good workout and interview, he'll be ok. If he struggles in his workouts and does poorly on interviews, his stock will plummet. But even with a falling stock, teams need quarterbacks this year so he's safe. He might get passed by Cutler but that's not a big deal.

LOL Rice and Brown weren't even close to their primes, and at that time were GOOD wideouts at best. They were 40 year old WR's, for fuck sakes. It wasn't like Gannon had Marvin Harrison and Randy Moss on the same team.

I'm not saying Young will be a horrible player. I'm saying teams haven't liked the way he throws the ball for quite some time and they are the ones who are worried about his test score. I still think he'll make up for it with interviews and workouts.

I can just see Cutler jumping him because teams like the fact he was part of the combines instead of doing a speciality workout.

Young did bad on Wonderlic? check

Young getting criticism for his throwing motion? check

"With the second pick of the draft the New Orleans Saints select Vince Young, Quarterback, Texas."

As for not being able to read a playbook, quit smoking crack. These's tests have nothing to do with understanding football and understanding compilcated plays.

If they're not using the Wonderlic to test a player's ability to read, comprehend, react, etc, then why do they even bother giving them? For the fun of seeing who does well and who does poorly? They're obviously looking for SOMETHING by giving these tests.

And I never said that he'd be unable to read a playbook. I said that they'd have to limit the playbook that they presented to him. I wouldn't trust a QB that got a SIX on his Wonderlic to read & comprehend an NFL sized playbook with multiple reads & multiple audibles.

I should also admit that pretty much everything that I've posted in this thread is only regurgitated from what NFL writers were discussing on ESPN radio the other night (Monday). I agreed with them and believe what they're saying, but it's nothing that I've come up with on my own.

The Panthers released Stephen Davis, DT Buckner and KR Rod "He hate me" Smart. You can expect tons of releases coming over the next couple of weeks, lots of them high profile players.

There was an error with the scoring and he had to retake it. He got a 16, which is average, so really that 6 is irrevelant.

Plus add in the factor, Young's agent never told him about the test, and never had him prepare for it.

Like I said in the previous post, McNair scored like a 12 on that test, and then the Houston Oilers GM had him take a test strickly about football(If your in this situation who would you throw to, and the fact of understanding a playbook and all that jazz), and he passed it with flying colors.

Why the big cuts? Is it because of the labor talks breaking down?

Yep. The cap was supposed to go up, but now that the CBA hasn't been extended it is not, so it is wrecking havoc on some teams. The Washington Redskins in particular are going to be gutted over this.

The teams that will benefit from this include Minnesota, Green Bay, San Francisco, Cleveland & Arizona. All of them are well under the cap in a free agent market where half the teams won't be able to bid at all due to the cap situation.

Without the new CBA, they did not increase the cap as much as was projected (if it was increased at all). The cap is going to be around 95 mil, where some teams were projecting in the 110 mil range (see: Redskins). So instead of how it usually is, where a couple teams are over and have to cut a couple players, now you have a bunch of teams having to cut between 15-25 million in salaries. Most of the teams don't have that much in bad contracts, so they have to cut the pricier legitimate players as well.

I am loving the reports that they might have to run 20 rookies out there next year.

Christ, if that's true I doubt Gibbs will want to coach another season. He hates developing young players, preferring to stick with vets.
