I've been thinking about this topic for a while now, but until now it's never bothered me enough to want to ask other people. I root for Georgia Tech, for example, because I went to school there; my best friend roots for Maryland because it was the closest major university to where he grew up.

Why do you root for the college that you root for?

I root for Penn State, I grew up watching the Tony Sacca(from South Jersey)/Kerry Collins teams in the 90s. No one in South Jersey cares about Rutgers except for alumni. My family is split between PSU fans and ND fans, so the arguments are always fun. There's also a good chance that I will be going to PSU next year too.

USC's the nearest to where I grew up, and when I was little I went to the Coliseum many times in the dark days.

My mom is a UCLA alumni, and thus grew up in L.A. with a natural hatred for USC. This was pushed even further when 1.) I learned of their rivalry, and 2.) I knew people who went to USC who were just total snobbish pricks.

Although of course, in the future, I may be a Noles fan simply because I'll be pursuing my master's there. I like FSU anyways, so it's not a big deal, but I didn't grow up cheering for them... or UCLA for that matter, since I only just recently got into NCAA football. I just picked one and wanted to cheer for them. I'll probably develop my fandom more sometime in the future.

Stanford, although I guess I have to go with "other" as technically I grew up closer to Berkeley than Palo Alto but rooting for them definently had to do with geographic reasons. Not sure why I ended up rooting for them as a kid instead of Cal but just worked out that way and I've been a fan ever since.

I am definently now a USC football fan as well, not just because of their success but because my step grandfather went to USC and played one year on the football team.

Campbell. Because they're the Fighting Camels. And are usually amongst the worst team in college bball games.

Buffalo. Because I sorta went there. And they're also noted for sucking. Until their bball team got good the last 2 years.

You guys might not know this, but I graduated from Virginia. I don't think I've ever let on about that.

Until I got to college, I pretty much didn't give a damn about college football. Now it's the only sport I really follow.

Next thing you know, we'll find an Oklahoma fan here.

Nicholls State University- Received two degrees there.

The nearest "major" university to me is LSU and Tulane. Tulane is actually closer. I am very Anti-LSU for personal reasons and I wouldn't call myself a Tulane fan as I'll never go there. This leaves a host of Sun Belt, Wac, Swac, and rival Southland schools.

When I evacuated for Katrina, to Texas, I bought a Longhorns shirt so I wouldn't look like a tourist. Next thing you know they win a National Championship. I'm not really a fan eitherway of them either though.

All in all I think I'm just a fan of College football for the sport and no particular team.

Here's a good question- Do you pursue a Masters degree at your Alma Mater's rival?

There's a few Southland Conference schools I'm looking at for my M.A. in either Political Science or History (my two fields).

Syracuse, because I grew up (mostly) just across the border from upstate New York and we used to get the radio station that carried SU sports. This was back in the days of Derrick Coleman and Sherman Douglas.

I root for Colorado State University because I went there.

But since CSU doesn't have an D1 hockey team, I root for Harvard because I lived in Cambridge for a few years.

I don't really have a favorite college team as I don't follow college as much as the pros in any sport...I pay attention to the Huskers but I'm apathetic whether they win or lose...I follow local teams like Creighton in basketball and Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in hockey just to show local, hometown support, plus both teams can be fun to watch.

Miami (FL) - when I just started getting into college football, I didn't have a favorite team. I already liked the Dolphins in the NFL, so I jumped on the college team in the same city. That was back in the late 80's, so I guess you could call it sorta front-running, too.

Penn State - that's where I went to school.

If they're facing off, I'll root for whomever I feel has the chance to have a better year. Luckily, they don't face each other much these days.

I chose other. The first college game I ever watched was an Alabama game. I can't remember who they played, but they beat the hell out of them and I noticed that the school had the same name as the state() and I became a fan from thereon.

I'm definitely not a frontrunner. Cheering for good teams is boring. I only cheered USC here because I'm envious of all southern California, and I like being a troll.

Why would you be envious of Southern California? I hate celebrities and our countries obsession with them which is one of the reasons I hate the teams from LA.

I root for Penn State

Ah, man. I used to like you, too.

Even though I loathe college athletics, I root for any team playing Penn State because I lived in that shithole for 1 1/2 years after I graduated from college while the better half finished up her degree from there.

Because the weather is perfect, and all the houses are big and pretty. And there's lots of successful people. I wanted to move there... but cost of living is too high. :(

Delaware (home state) and the FreeShoesU.

Good ole Florida State, where players getting kicked off for getting free stuff isn't even a surprise anymore.
