spman 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 A friend of mine got hooked on this show via the Kevin Smith connection, and as a result got me to start watching. While overall, I really don't like the show for a veriety of reasons, I do find it oddly compelling in a car crash that you can't turn your eyes away from. The acting, especially on the early epsiodes, is wooden, with the kids being unable to convey any real emotion. While I do dig their attempt to try and run with storylines that teenagers might be able to relate to, most of the time they come off as being either dull, or ludicrous. Maybe I was totally out of the loop in High School (which I actually was), but I don't know personally too many of my friends or people that I was aware of who were dealing with pregnancy, sex, alcohol, hard drugs, etc. any earlier then maybe the age of 16, and even then only in the lower class urban neighborhoods, certainly not some middle class suburb in Canada. That being said, while the producers of this show seem to imply that the show is written for the 12-18 year old set in mind, I'm not too sure that if I had children of my own, I would even let them watch this, it's just not apropriate subject matter for the age group. Perhaps I'm just a bit behind, but this show seems to lump Teenagers with problems and situations that I didn't face until I was in College at least. Maybe I'm just a prude though. So anyways, despite my objections with the subject matter, I still can't seem to stop watching. What is it about this show that is so compelling>
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 the show went downhill once: the shooting episode occured, Sean left the show, the show focused too much on that stupid bitch Craig and all his lame problems...I've only seen maybe one or two episodes from this past "season". Placebo Effect 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 Sadly I don't have The N anymore and it doesn't seem they're all that intent on getting the season DVDs out there.
MDH257 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2006 I think it incredibly naive to think middle class kids don't deal with these issues. While it's streching things for all of it to be happening at this one school, the entire point of the show is to try and tackle every "issue" that teenages could face. Sort of like afterschool specials with a regular cast. BTW Placebo, they're coming out with Season 3 on DVD in March. It's going to have the abortion episode that The N banned. Epic Reine 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 They need to focus more episodes on Ellie since she is the most compelling character the have. My favorite episode was when she was cutting herself. When she's the focus of the show, it's gets real interesting. I'm pissed that Ashley left but couldn't care less about Sean or Terri.
... 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 You know, as soon as they revealed that the episode was about a school shooting, the first thing I thought was, "well, there's a good chance it'll thin out the opening credits."
Guest NYChris Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Yeah by one and the only one who was killed was Rick. Emma and Manny are by far the hottest girls on any of the Degrassi shows.
Ed Wood Caulfield 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Seriously, who would want to get Liberty pregnant? Yeah, I don't get why they had her become pregant either. Emma and Manny are by far the hottest girls on any of the Degrassi shows. I agree that they are hot, but I think Ellie is hotter than both of them.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 The show lost me when they did the "Rick didn't deserve abuse" episodes and tried to sell he was an ok guy. Actually no, he wasn't a good guy and if all he got was stuff dumped on him then he should have considered himself lucky. They push the character we have no reason to like (Craig, Spinner and Rick) and the ones we can start to like they completely destroy. And I was glad the Sean-Emma thing ended cause if Emma said "SEAN" one more time, I would have screamed. She was the Degrassi equal of Dora the Explorer. Then for no reason she gave a blowjob to the guy who helped steal a computer from her cancer attacked step-dad. I MEAN WHAT?!?!
MDH257 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Yeah, I also had a problem with the show trying to get the audience to feel bad for Rick after he had beaten Teri. Also thought the shooting storyline would have been more effective if they had killed off somebody. If they didn't want to get rid of one of the regulars, they could have killed off Ms. Kwan or someone else on that level.

If they didn't want to get rid of one of the regulars, they could have killed off Ms. Kwan or someone else on that level. they could have killed Jimmy off...he's always just kinda been there, never very integral to the story but his death would have been impactful enough...it would have made Spinner's character a little more interesting. nice how Teri just up and vanished off the show, by the way. They simply wrote her off as "being in a coma", even though the last time we saw her she was clearly conscious and coherent. and please, we've had enough Marco...okay we get it, he's a gay character, that's cool, stop making sure we all know that he's gay EVERY episode. let's focus on something else with him now. while I'm drawn to the show based on liking the original, it's just horribly written and has flaws and holes everywhere. Example: JT has hated Liberty for years, now suddenly he's her baby daddy? WTF? he couldn't pull down anything else?? Craig is probably the worst written character of any show I've ever watched: whiney, bi-polar, angsty, dad was killed, mom died when he was young, knocks a girl up while cheating on his girl, girl ditches him for a better life...christ, have him kill himself already. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 nice how Teri just up and vanished off the show, by the way. They simply wrote her off as "being in a coma", even though the last time we saw her she was clearly conscious and coherent. Teri transferred to another school. They mentioned it briefly in one of the episodes before Rick showed up. I always liked the Teri character but I knew she was on the way out the way they buried her the start of that season. Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Rick's character was another example of piss poor sloppy writing...the guy was abusive...okayyyy well WHY was he abusive? we'll never know because he's fucking dead now. Couldn't they have gotten a better actor to play him? Teri couldn't have taken his ass down if need be?

Couldn't they have gotten a better actor to play him? Teri couldn't have taken his ass down if need be? He was abusive cause he was misunderstood. That's all they ever gave us. Which is the same as saying, "he was abusive because Teri wouldn't listen. The stupid fat bitch! Poor Rick!" I never did figure out why Teri didn't kick his ass when she could have been a linebacker for the Lions. And stealing a scene from Carrie to get him over didn't work for me. I was surprised they didn't go the mommy molested him route in a last ditch effort to make someone sad for him.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 I mean, there's no excuse whatsoever for domestic abuse, don't get me wrong, but there's is an understanding as to why they are doing it and we just never really got that with him...okay, maybe "understanding" isn't the best word to use, but you get what I mean...I would guess that he probably had never had a girlfriend before and he just became so super controlling over her for fear of losing her and never having a girlfriend again. The Niggardly King 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 I tried watching one of the older ones a week back, but I just couldn't get into it. ... 0 Report post Posted January 20, 2006 And how many of the characters from the original series have made appearances? 45%? I guess if not enough angsty teens watch it now, CTV can cart out Wheels or whoever to pop a cheap nostalgia rating from the angsty teens of the 1980s.
