Will/Should Rey Mysterio Make It To WrestleMania 22?

I know there's another Rey thread about if he could be a credible world champion, but this one is focusing exclusively on whether or not he will actually make it to the main event of WrestleMania 22. Dave Meltzer said this in his Sunday, pre-Rumble update:

-- The winner of tonight's Royal Rumble is not scheduled for a main event at Wrestlemania this year.

Of course, the winner of the Royal Rumble turned out to be Rey Mysterio, who entered at #2 and broke the record for longest time in the Rumble. Ever since this update, speculation has been rampant everywhere about whether or not Mysterio will actually find himself going for the World Heavyweight Title in the main event of WrestleMania 22 against either Kurt Angle or The Undertaker. Meltzer does have a history of being wrong about the WM main event, such as when he said the main event of WM20 would be a ladder match up until about 2 weeks before the show.

 

One probable scenario is that Randy Orton will start to taunt Rey to the point where Rey gets so fed up that he will put his title shot on the line against Orton at No Way Out or Saturday Night's Main Event in Detroit on 3/18, where Orton will defeat Rey for the title shot and go on to face Angle at WrestleMania 22. Meltzer said last night on The LAW that the plan for the Smackdown title match is still Angle vs. Orton.

 

So, will Rey Mysterio make it through all of this to main event WrestleMania 22? And should he even be there to begin with?

 

EDIT: Right after I posted this, I read the Smackdown spoilers and something very significant happens about this subject.

At the beginning of the show while Rey Mysterio is in the ring talking about winning the Rumble, Randy Orton comes out and challenges Rey to put his title shot on the line at No Way Out. After the main event of the night with Orton & Mark Henry vs. Mysterio & Kurt Angle, Mysterio accepts Orton's challenge at No Way Out. Looks like Da Meltz was right.

I wouldn't have a problem with Mysterio winning, just as long as he still gets to go to Wrestlemania and get his title shot. Whether it turns out to be: Mysterio Vs. Cena, Mysterio Vs. Angle, Mysterio Vs. Undertaker, Mysterio Vs. HHH Vs. Cena, or Mysterio Vs. Angle Vs. Orton.

 

I don't care how it goes down, I don't even care if Mysterio does or does not win either world title, but don't fuck him out of getting his hard earned spot especially when it was clean, instead of the done to death "both guys going over and hitting the floor at the same time" spot! Like somebody else said in another thread, it takes away the entire point of the Royal Rumble.

Speaking of done-to-death, Rey Mysterio Jr. shouldn't have the record for longest Rumble time. They just played that card TWO YEARS AGO with Benoit, a guy who, you know, actually deserves it. They're just gonna do this every single year and cheapen the whole thing to the point where everybody knows that whoever draws 1-4 is gonna win so they can OVERCOME THE ODDS AND MAKE HISTORY AND WOW THEY REALLY DID IT. Part of me wanted it to always be Ric Flair who was The Guy That Lasted A Really Long Time, because '92 is the best Rumble ever, and Ric Flair is great, but I liked Benoit a lot too, so I was cool with that, save for that lame-ass "we made you get #1" conspiracy angle. But to have fuckin' Rey Mysterio Jr. do it? That's stupid. He's still just the little masked guy from WCW to me, in fact, he's been significantly marred since then by the Filthy Animals, that stupid jack-in-the-box entrance, his shitty Mexican rap music, a lame-ass finishing move called the "West Coast Pop," and that angle where Eddie Guerrero was his son's biological father. I don't care how many Mexicans watch Smackdown. Rey Mysterio Jr doesn't belong in the world title picture.

They devalued the WWE title when they put it back on Cena...despite the ratings increase for taking the belt OFF OF CENA.

 

They devalued the World title when a Raw guy (who lost to a top RAW guy WHILE HOLDING THE TITLE) jumped to the B Brand and won...after failing to win the RAW title for months.

 

They'll devalue the Rumble by screwing Rey.

In WWE logic, it makes total sense to screw with Rey. Orton blew up Eddie's car, remember? If you don't, WWE will remind you numerous times as the build for the match. Orton is a legend killer, and the way WWE will tell it, he's killing off both Eddie and Rey once and for all, then he's getting Angle. Orton is the next big heel (another reason to make sure Edge doesn't get over). The heat on Orton when he "steals" Mysterio's title shot will likely the most he's had his entire career.

Mention that Rey's first PPV match was against Angle who made him tap, and bring up that in most of their matches Angle always wins.

Orton goaded Mysterio into it by saying some really crazy stuff about Eddie, such as, "Eddie's in hell" and "You would have as much a chance of beating me as Eddie does of coming back to life." But yeah, either way it still makes Rey look incredibly stupid.

Honestly, if they really want Orton to go to Wrestlemania instead of Mysterio there are reasonable ways to do it. They should have just got Orton to goad Mysterio into a stipulation match like Last Man Standing or something, and then when they get there, he and his dad could use the match as an excuse to really assault Rey, maybe hit him with a truck or drop him from a forkilft or just beat the shit out of him with gimmicked baseball bats until he has "broken ribs".

 

Then, using the clause that if the RR winner's unable to go to Mania, the second to last survivor goes, Orton can get the title shot that way without making Rey look like a jackass. Also, that allows more heat on the WM match because Angle's avenging the despicable thing that Orton did to Rey, and trying to stop him from winning the title that way. Down the line, this would also leave the door open to continue the Orton/Mysterio feud with even more heat.

 

Honestly though, this "hapless innocent babyface gets outsmarted by the mean conniving heel" shit doesn't help anyone. At least if the heel's going to outsmart the face, don't make it something that an eight year old could see through.

 

It's kinda funny that the two people that could draw huge against Hogan, (Orton and Cena), are both getting put into title matches where they won't draw for shit.

I absolutely cannot believe that they would go through with this. Talk about a fucking retarded idea. It would do the following:

 

1. Kill Rey's heat and credibility to be a moron and put his shot on the line and then lose.

2. It would kill the Rumble's credibility as a major event.

 

In the name of what exactly? Pushing Randy FUCKING Orton?! I mean who exactly is going to be the heel and face with him and Angle? Angle has never shown any ability to be an over face and after his heelish antics to beat Mark Henry as well as him likely playing heel vs. UT I can't see this match at all. Angle could much easier go heel vs. Rey than he could be a half ass face against Orton.

 

Here's what I'm thinking will occur and should occur: Orton goes to Booker and tries to cash in his favor, Booker fucks up the run in and costs Orton the match. Then Orton can dick around with Booker and the US title and Rey can go to WM and get his well earned title shot.

If they wanted Randy to have heat, they could've tried putting him over Taker at Armageddon, then have him eliminate Rey from the Rumble, cheating or something. Randy is then cocky about winning the Rumble, claiming the greatest win in the history of the Rumble (even though he only entered at #30) then Rey challenges for his title shot(he lasted the longest in the Rumble) at NWO, Randy calls the favour from Booker, leading to Booker/Rey fued for US Title. That way Rey gets a championship win at WM that he can dedicate to Eddie (using history of US title being Eddies comeback win)

 

All this is a poor substitute in my mind for Rey keeping his title shot and winning at WM.

Rey Misterio absolutely deserves that title shot.

 

I don't think there's been anyone else in WWE in the past year that has stomped on their dignity more than Misterio. Writing a storyline with Eddie Guerrero in which he exploited his own son in an angle that said Guerrero is actually his real father. Agreeing to go along with the exploitation of Guerrero's death, from screaming to the heavens for Eddie's help to standing idly by while Orton says Eddie's looking at him from hell right now. Misterio has gone along with more disgusting angles in the past year than anybody else in WWE.

 

But come on. Why would Misterio even agree to go along with that Orton comment? It's not like he's getting the WrestleMania title shot anyway. He's being shunted back to the midcard obviously, and it's not like they would ever fire him over that. The company's using him as a tool. The token wrestler there, used so heels like Triple H and Orton can take potshots against Guerrero to put themselves over.

 

So yes, Misterio should get that title shot. He deserves it. He pissed away any semblence of his dignity in the past year, so why not at least give Misterio something that might possibly justify whoring himself out to WWE.

Uh no. Rey brought his actual son into an angle that confused him, cried like a baby because Eddie meant so much to him and has basically made his character solely about a dead man for the last 2-3 months. I guess if Rey wasn't 5'3 and the lifelong underdog people wouldn't feel sorry for him, but the fact is the shit he's been doing for the last year makes HHH look like a saint. Chavo is his actual nephew and Benoit would deserve a beatdown too if he was calling upon the power of Eddie in his matches months after he died. A one match tribute is adequate. Incorporating a move into your moveset is fine, but becoming Rey Mysterio Guerrero the vessel for Eddie's soul is bullshit.

I agree that Rey shouldn't be doing the "calling upon Eddie" thing. But it's not his idea, he's just doing what he is told. So he should be punished for just doing his job? Same goes for the Dominic angle. And to say he "ruined his son's life" is moronic. If Dominic was legit upset and confused, the angle would not have taken place. Please don't be so gullible.

 

I think it's kinda messed up for Rey to be doing this from a personal standpoint. But from a business standpoint, he's just doing his job, so he deserves to be rewarded.

 

I think Benoit, Malenko, Chavo & Rey should take a stand against management for this BS, but if they don't, I won't despise them for that decision. I can't pretend to know all the factors that are weighing on their minds, so it's not my place to judge them.
