It's Ash Wednesday/Lent Season

Recommended Posts

Got some Captain D's/Long John Silver's coupons cause it's the start of Lent, not sure which one to go to, both are nearby, I like both fish and shrimp.

What is everyone's preference? Long John's or Captain D's?

Well I live in South Louisiana so there is an abundance of seafood everywhere, outside of standard cans of tuna. In fact we don't even have a Long John Silver anywhere in my area.

Sadly I don't even go for the seafood too much, I just got hit up the sushi bars.

I should also note I love fried clams, but I don't know if you can eat them under the Lent rules. Also, while I'm on the subject, do only Catholics do the Lent with no meat on Fridays or do other denominations do it as well?

I don't even think Catholics do it anymore, because I don't think it's an accepted practice anymore (the Pope made some kind of declaration about Lent years back).

Thats....news to me, it's one of the few things I still do as a Catholic....do you happen to know where I could look that up?

I honestly don't understand the concept of Lent/eating fish instead of beef and chicken, etc. I honestly admit I'm not Catholic, nor do I understand the signifigance of the ash on the forehead.

As for eating fish for Lent; I can't stand seafood, so I'd be one miserable guy during Lent.

I think it's the Catholic/Christian way of sorta fasting. It's very strange and never made much sense to me either. Lent is supposed to represent the 40 days the Son spent in the desert, I think. My whatever you want to call it is very rusty

The whole No Red Meat on Friday deal has nothing on Ramadan, and, yes, I've done both. (Raised Catholic, though I don't really practice, since I know it's going to come up).

Catholics still do no meat on Fridays during Lent. Although our Bishop said we would be pardoned to get our corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day.

A lot of the instructors at the college I go to are observing Lent out of respect for another instructor who is also a Priest. I can't stand the smell or taste of fish, so Lent is out of the question for me.

Catholics can be pretty unbearable this time of year. I remember once on a band trip, we went to a Chinese place, and this girl was like "well I know what I'm NOT getting" and I said "why's that?" and she gets really indignant and goes "Okay, look. FIRST of all, it's Friday. SECOND of all, it's Lent. What do YOU think?" Should've said "I think you're a bitch" or something, but I didn't want to cause a scene.

Back in '97, me and some friends took a trip to the Bay Area. We'd go every few weeks or so. Anyways, it was around this time of year and we all went to Subway. My ex and her friend were halfway through their meat-laden sandwiches when one of them realized that it was Friday and that it was...Lent. They were acting all guilty. I asked my ex why eating meat on Friday during Lent was something to feel guilty about, while having premarital sex with me the night before wasn't.

Oh, they gave me the rest of their sandwiches, too. They didn't go so far as to induce vomiting, though.

I've forgotten once or twice. I felt really dumb and probably said a little prayer for forgiveness. The Friday before Spring Break they had General Gao's Chicken at school and I put it on my plate but I caught myself in time and put it back right afterward

You don't have to eat fish if your a catholic. I'm a catholic and don't like fish, and the important thing is not eating meat on Fridays.

Same here. With pizza, pasta, vegetarian chili, etc, I have no problems being meat-free on Fridays without having to eat fish or other seafood.

I concur. That shit was annoying during grammar/high school for me. Like the first thought in my head should be DON'T EAT MEAT ON FRIDAYS. Fuck off. I hate religion.
