While this isn't nearly as egregious as last summers Honeymooners film, it's still pretty bad. Imagine the uproar in the African American community if a movie producer decided he was going to make a Sanford and Son film starring Ben and Jerry Stiller, or The Jeffersons with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn? "They" make a remake of a URBAN COMDEY into another URBAN COMEDY.

 

Honeymooners was also a URBAN COMEDY about a broke ass busdriver and his brokeass friends living in the broke ass side of town.

Black 70's sitcoms were completely built upon the race of the characters because they had to be. Other sitcoms were not. A "white" remake of the Jeffersons or Goodtimes makes no fucking sense. The struggles of the white man trying to make it out the ghetto is fucking stupid.

 

And last but not least, white people have been remaking the Cosby show every since that fucker premiered and you don't hear anyone bitching about that.

There's nothing racist about it. The shows were about white characters just as the Jeffersons was about black characters. They're remaking it into a movie with black characters now b/c of one of the several 1,000 idiotic hollywood reasons such as:

-People pay more to see black people b/c they're hip

-They were oppressed so we have to kiss their ass now or else they'll go all black panther on us

-Black people are cooler than white people b/c of their skin color

And remaking the Jeffersons with a family of white rednecks is about as faithful to the original as remaking The Honeymooners with Cedric the Entertainer, who I do think is funny (though I haven't seen the movie). Ralph Kramden has pretty much become a white working class 50's stereotype. The character and the actor are comic classics.

What sums up my feelings on this remake was a clip of "Ed" and "Ralph" hanging on a fire escape, and "Ed" said something about how he's had "thoughts" of "Ralph's wife." (Can't remember if they used these names in the shitty remake.)

 

Coming from a longtime fan and someone who has the Honeymooners series on DVD, that scene tells me all I need to know about how horrible this abortion of a remake is.

 

And when are we going to have a whites-only remake of "Homeboys in Outer Space"?

I never said I like the idea of the movie. I have no intrest in ever seeing the Honeymooners remake or this (despite thinking Cedric and Mike Epps are hilarious that movie looks like trash). My point is instead of bitching about the dozens of remakes made every couple of years, the best thing that could be come up with for the topic of this thread was the race of the people making this particular movie. Blacks didn't have sitcoms way back in the day so if black actors are going to rip off old sitcoms, they are going to star white people.
