WWE will finally return to Madison Square Garden on 8/26/07 for the 2007 edition of Summerslam. If the company doesn't return to MSG prior to that date, it will be a 27 month span between live events for the original home of Wrestlemania.

 

*The Hammerstein Ballroom is already booked for 6/10/07, with the date listed as a third ECW One Night Stand PPV, so that annual event will continue

 

The Royal Rumble will return to San Antonio, Texas in January 2007. The city hosted the 1997 edition of the event, headlined by Shawn Michaels regaining the WWF championship from Sycho Sid in the main event

 

WWE will return to the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec for the 2007 Survivor Series PPV, which also happens to be the ten year anniversary of the Bret Hart screwjob.

I don't think MSG has the same allure it once did, but it was - in the days before weekly nationwide shows & monthly PPV's - the biggest show of the month for the WWF. It's tradition.

To simply put why the WWE and MSG go hand in hand: Almost every major angle and title change to happen in the WW(WF)E from the late 50s to the early 80s has happend in MSG. Its their ECW Arena.

Yes, but MSG generally has the BEST crowds and while it may not always play into what the WWE wants they're still guaranteed solid reactions for almost every match.

It's just WWE has always seen NYC as a very big deal and in many ways they are. The last couple Raw/SD supershow tapings haven't been all that in MSG.

I'll grant you that Chicago, Toronto, Charlotte (if Flair is in the building) and Boston & Philly (which you didn't mention) are definitely usually good places for the atmosphere, but Seattle, San Jose, San Diego or the other Canadian cities I don't think are anywhere near the best crowds. I honestly can't recall any show from one of those places ever being memorable because of anything the fans added to the show. However, Montreal is bar none consistently the worst crowd on the WWE circuit so maybe they should get a cheap plug here as well. Stop hatin'

Wasn't Montreal the crowd that came up with "TWOOOOO!" after every two count.

And Calgary is a super hot crowd as well, maybe better than Toronto at times. All the Canadian cities are hot, except maybe Vancouver.

Yes, that's one of the many reasons Montreal's fans suck. The night they turned La Res into Hoganesque faces was another I can remember.

 

I forgot about Calgary as a good crowd. They're probably # 2 in Canada, but just to be clear to the person who asked if I've been to SD (no, but why would anyone want to go all the way to California from NYC to visit a small city?), I was talking about good crowds, not necessarily hot ones. It's a subtle difference. Some of those cities DA listed are full of marks who cheer for even the completely worthless types like Eugene, and while they may have been really "hot", they were certainly not a "good" crowd. I kind of view it like the ECW mutant crowd vs an RoH, or TNA in Orlando one. Anyone can be loud, but it takes really good fans to add to the experience in a positive way. Shouting TWOOOOOOOO at the top of your lungs doesn't add anything to the show for example.

Does doing the wave during a JBL match add anything to the show? Certainly added to it being there. I love going up to Toronto for WWE, it always beats the hell out of Rochester and Buffalo crowds.

I just look it at based on where I'd like to go to watch wrestling given that 3 of the bigger arenas (MSG, Nassau & Continental) are a train ride/short car ride away for me, and that list basically begins and ends with Boston, Calgary, Charlotte, Chicago, Philly & Toronto (listed alphabetically). Anywhere else would probably annoy me just because the fans either go nuts for everything thus diluting their excitement, or they sit on their hands for 2 hours, thus wasting the money they paid to go see the show. I guess I'd rather be surrounded by cynical (objective? non brainwashed?) wrestling fans since I am one, and the last time I went to a show with too many rabid marks (RoH event) I wanted to punch people in the throat because they would not shut the fuck up and let a match breathe.

Yeah, watching that Joe/Kobashi match it struck me that them like chanting "MATCH OF THE YEAR" two minutes in after a bunch of slaps was pretty lame.

MSG is played out as far as getting over soley based on being MSG. It is still a great venue for live events, but it's not like it makes a crappy event any better.

I do, I think the place a show is held can make a huge difference. The shows in Canada always have something a bit different in terms of crowd reaction. MSG always brings with it a lot of tradition. The Chicago crowd for Mania this year brought their own minds and personalities. I think where a show is held can make a big difference.

Hearing you and your pals drunkely harrassing the ref during the Smackdown show was pretty awesome. In fact, one of the only good things about the show.

 

I think the crowd at the ACC chanting "Go Leafs Go" during Taker vs Test from RAW in 2001 was pretty awesome and a good indicator for those in the ring as to how much we actually cared about the match.
