Syndication of HBO Shoes

Recommended Posts

First Sex in the City, and now the Sopranos will be headed to A&E in 2007 and Six Feet Under to Bravo. Obviously, the shows will go through a lot of editing to be aired on the other stations but I have only really watched the Sopranos on HBO and I cannot even imagine it edited down to what it would be to air on A&E.

Personally, I'm dissapointed that HBO would do this, as the quality of the shows edited so much(Sopranos anyway) will be a whole lot less than they were originally. Plus, they're already charging absurd prices for the DVDs so why don't they just stop there.

Any comments or thoughts from anyone else about it??

Are you fuckin kidding me? You know how much money A&E put down for the Sopranos?

$2.5 million dollars for each episode. If they turned it down, they would be stupid. Hell, it is one of the ways networks make money. HBO doesn't give two shits if it is censored or not.

I'm thinking it wouldn't be necessarily difficult to edit out the nudity used in the show, and just use some other shots for the scenes that weren't used instead and keep the audio. The language though, that's REALLY difficult. Maybe A&E could still air it with the nasty language and slap a "viewer discretion is advised" label on it. After all, they are a cable network and can do what they please.

I know that after the large Sopranos deal was made they agreed to film all future episodes with alternative, non-offensive scenes. So while the first few seasons will have to be edited, the later ones will just be run as alternate versions.

I feel that some profanity might sneak by, but don't get the idea that the censors are loafing. You don't want to clog the dialogue with lots of bleeps, or else they'll just boot the show from the lineup. I don't think this will be a heavily enforced censorship policy; they'll probably just flip-flop as they see fit, since the FCC can't nip at their heels.

I'll watch The Sopranos and Six Feet Under in syndication. I've never seen either show, since I don't have HBO, but I'd like to.

Fuck Sex and the City. I've watched that with the girlfriend. Awful.

Sex and the City isn't awful at all, well except for Season 1.

I've watched some SATC in sydnication, and I really don't know the difference. The plots that are usually the most explicit are Samantha's and those are the ones I never cared for to begin with.

Sorry but SITC is awful. There is only one attractive woman on the show (Kristen Davis) and the rest look like they have taken shovels to the face. That and I thought the episodes were just plain attrocious.

I agree that Kristin Davis is the most attractive, even though SJP looks good in a lot of the episodes.

The show got off to a slow start, but once they hit Season 3, most of the episodes are great stuff.

By the way, The Larry Sanders Show and Mr. Show have also been on basic cable. Larry Sanders wasn't too hacked up; I didn't see Mr. Show on TBS to see how they handled that one. I have no idea how they could've done it any justice, unless they used "mother father Chinese dentist" for EVERY obscenity. I think it's off the schedule.

Who would've guessed that the redneck Atlanta station, probably a bane of David Cross's existence, would dump Andy Griffith and Mama's Family reruns for Mr. Show?

Mr Show was hacked to hell. It's really bad as some of the jokes end up making no sense or just die a horrible death because huge scenes are missing.

Sex and the City is everything I hate about women wrapped up in a nice, neat, little package.

Obligatory second post from Bob to counter-act the inherent gayness of the first post.

If this show appeals to any man beyond the obvious facination with listening to women talking about how much they like to have sex/watch women having sex, it might be time to question your lifestyle choices.

Agreed. I may be a liberal, pinko, greenie etc....but to describe SITC as anything but annoying is crazy to me.

Eh, it's a good show. It's well written, features 3 compelling characters, and has topics and discussions you don't usually see on TV.

I didn't even like anyone other then Charlotte until I started getting into Miranda when she got less bitchy when she got pregnant. I've always hated Carrie but except for the Berger story, her storylines are usually interesting. Until the last season, Samantha was just there to make sure they earned their TV-MA rating.

I can't see why they can't do like FX does and keep most of the language except the f-bombs, blur the boobs and slap a TVMA rating on it.

I wish some of these cable networks had the balls to allow the shows to say fuck. They are allowed to, they just are afraid of the advertisers. I am sure there are plenty of companies that would sponsor shows that swear.

Atleast Comedy Central does it at 1:00.

I'm still sick of the FCC trying to get to cable channels.

I didn't know how much the deal was worth, so clearly, HBO would have been stupid not to make it, I was more concerned with the show changing so much. And airing it later or TV-MA and editing only a bit of it would work, I just don't see A&E doing it really. I'll prob watch some of Six Feet Under when it's syndicated and I wasn't aware that they're also filming "less offensive" Sopranos scenes as well now a days. I guess its worth it for 2.5 an episode.

Doesn't the average Sopranos episode run about 55 minutes? They'll have to cut 12 minutes to fit the average U.S. running time.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of the Comedy Central edit of Mr. Show?

The few times I caught Mr. Show on TBS, they did quite well in terms of handling it; they ran the entire episode (normally 35-40 minutes with commercials) and left a lot of the major language intact (such as shit and such). They gave it the TV-MA label and aired it at 3:00 AM, which probably let them get away with it mind you.

The Comedy Central version was hacked to bits. Compressed for a 30 minute slot and filled with massive bleeps, it was horrific to watch in terms of the show being butchered.....

I've seen Tenacious D and Mr. Show not only on Comedy Central, but on Comedy Central in the middle of the day. Tenacious D was on recently at some ridiculous time, like 3 PM. About half the episode is edited out then. I mean, it makes it golden for HBO. They get big money out of it, probably moves more DVDs... but I can't watch it. It all reminds me of the MAD TV skit with the PAX friendly version of the Sopranos.

I've also seen "Dream On" outside of HBO, and wasn't "Tales From The Crypt" a first-run HBO show?

And even though the shows will be edited, it's smart of HBO to do this. Not only do these shows get more exposure, but also it might tempt people who haven't seen these programs unedited to either buy the DVDs or subscribe to HBO.
