TWIB #5: 1 May - 7 May

Recommended Posts

Shut out again thanks to Hairston's poor placement on a stolen base attempt and Juan Pierre's lack of any sort of throwing arm.

I seriously laughed when Len said there was going to be a play at the plate. It was hit to center; no there wasn't.

Four shutouts in six games, three runs scored in those other two.

I am willing to go off on a limb and say that the Cubs are missing Derek Lee.

So I bumped the tuner on my radio from 720 to 700, and evidently I can pick up Reds games at night all the way from Cincinnati. Must've changed the contour of their signal; I couldn't get 700 when I was trying to pick up distant stations last summer.

WLW is a 50,000 watt monster of an AM station, so you can probably hear them over a good portion of the midwest and eastern states at night.

Here's their predicted signal path, which is probably rather conservative (at night at least):

While waiting for his flight, my dad called me up and told me he saw Jose Lima boarding a plane headed to New

York. That, combined with the news that John Maine is suffering from inflammation in his pitching hand, means that Lima is most likely starting for the Mets on Sunday.

This is somewhat disconcerting to say the least.

Zambrano's hurt now too, and is out of the game after 1.1 scoreless IP. This is not good.

I just read on my fantasy baseball site that Jose Lima is, in fact, being called up to start for the Mets tomorrow and "another roster move will be made to accomodate" Lima. That's just great...I hope he sings "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

Adam Larouche hits a homerun to left center to give the Braves the lead. The Mets bullpen has been much better than expected but they have been hurt by the long ball

Starting on Monday, and since....

Travis Hafner has 4 HR's, 13 RBI's and has an OPS of 1.349. He has had three 4 RBI games. Damn.

I'm aware that it's 50,000, being a bit of a radio geek myself. A lot of the big Chicago stations are clear channels as well, e.g. 670, 720, 890, 1000. I was just surprised that it came in, having tried before to no avail. I was also surprised because I live in a dorm, the walls of which seem to just eat radio waves, and my radio is a piece of crap that I bought for $9 at Wal-Mart. Damn thing barely picks up 720

D-Train vs. Mark Mulder. This should be a fun game to watch. Dontrelle is probably my favorite pitcher after Chris Carpenter and Barry Zito.

Those paths are definitely somewhat conservative, as the radius for 660 out of New York ends somewhere near Williamsport, PA according to that site. At night and in certain cars, it comes in pretty clear way out here in Central Ohio.

The D-Train hasn't looked too sharp the last couple starts. Granted he's faced some hot offenses, but he's losing games because of his own pitching, not because his team isn't scoring runs for him.

And the O's do suck. They should unload Tejada...to the Cubs.

He's got a nagging leg/knee/hamstring injury..still want him?

Very conservative indeed, as 1120 KMOX isn't even getting past the WI/IL state line on there. I wish the signals carried as well during the day. Damn ionosphere.

Kevin Millar might be worth it for his cheerleading. Apparently clubhouse morale has been in the doldrums for a while, which is creating a vicious cycle. Obviously.

Just watching a handful of games, I've seen several runners picked off already. Stolen bases are helpful in some cases, but it's still seems silly to risk giving up a runner, especially when he's picked off.

Izzy is still looking wild. Although the runs were charged to Looper, it's a one-run game thanks to Izzy.

It appears Zambrano's injury is pretty serious. Even with Bannister coming back soon, Victor's injury opens a big hole in the rotation, which, judging by the tone of that article, might be filled by Jose Lima for the forseeable future.

*slaps forehead*

On a more positive note, I went to the Clippers/Tides game tonight too, only to get thrown out after a couple innings when the usher discovered I used a ticket for last night's game to get in. Managed to get Jeff Keppinger's signature before that, though, which I'm pretty happy about.

Well, a 7-0 lead turns into a 7-6 lead, but it's a win nontheless. Mulder finally gets win number 100. I think the bullpen must secretly hate him or something, as it seems they do everything possible to blow the lead when he starts.

Smallball! Smartball! Manufacturing runs! Station to station! Antiquated thinking!
