I never had a problem with the Special Edition versions. I didn't like some of the minor changes, but not enough to constantly bitch and whine about them.

 

I bought the 2004 set on release day and I'll do the same for the upcoming DVDs. I'll probably watch the SE versions most of the time, but it will be nice to be able to watch the original versions if I want to, without resorting to my aging, pan-and-scan VHS copies.

 

How "limited" will this set be? Because if it truly is "limited" I WILL buy it... and then resell it on eBay.

The DVDs will be released in September and discontinued at the end of the year.

 

As of right now, the upcoming DVDs won't be available in a box set. Each movie will be sold separately. Each movie will be a 2-disc set - one disc for the original theatrical version and one disc for the existing 2004 Special Edition version.

 

The eBay thing probably isn't worth it in the long run. There is bound to be a ton of people with that same idea.

I have no problem with the SEs, and in many ways prefer them (a lot of the special effects in the battles have been cleaned up, I always hated how the Snowspeeders were transparent in the original). I'm likely going to pass on them, unless I get some sort of urge to go out and get them when they are released. Personally, I think those that despise the SEs and love the Originals have too much time on their hands as the changes are very minor and don't affect the story or plot at all.

The changes didn't ruin the movies, but many parts did decrease my enjoyment of them. For instance, I liked the fact that Biggs was added to ANH, but a couple of pretty neat model effects shots were taken out for no reason. There were also some pretty non-sensical changes made that, I feel, hurt the films. The SE were still solid movies, mind you, but did lack some of the charm of the original versions.

I'm still gonna hold out. I just know eventually he's going to bring out an "ultimate" edition with the orginal 3 unedited, the (new) original 3 edited, episodes 1-3 and about 10 bonus disks with special features and fan shit on them.

I have no trouble buying these again, since there are second-hand video stores I can trade my old ones into. I bought the special edition DVD 2 years ago, and I got to enjoy them for those 2 years. I don't mind trading these in and getting a different version, considering the set 2 years ago really wasn't that expensive.

Same here. And even if this never comes out, I can still go back and buy the two trilogies from somewhere in the universe.

 

Thank god I don't ever buy anything as soon as it comes out.

You're thinking of the VHS set that came out in 1995. The selling point there was that the entire trilogy had been THX-ified and the film restored. The prior video releases were the crap 80s VHS editions that didn't have the framing formatted for televisions. Shortly after that came out, it was announced that the trilogy would be back in theatres for the 20th anniversary, and those are the Special Editions.

You're thinking of the VHS set that came out in 1995. The selling point there was that the entire trilogy had been THX-ified and the film restored.

I think that's the set I have. It came in Widescreen (silver box) or Fullscreen (gold box), and I preordered a Widescreen set.

 

I've never opened it, and now since it's VHS i probably never will.

And for the record, that set does say on it that it is the LAST video release of Star Wars in it's original form. So it's not like Lucas didn't warn ya.

My sister had that set, and I copied it onto on VHS tape. That got passed onto my cousin when I got the Widescreen Special Edition that came out later, which got passed onto my best friend when I got the DVD's.

 

Damn. Never thought about how many times I've gotten the OT before now.

This cracks me up. For two years, all I hear is that people want the original trilogy in the pre special edition format released on DVD. Then he announces it and most of the responses fall into one of two categories:

 

1.) Greedy Lucas is out for more cash.

 

2.) I'm not buying them becuase I already bought the previous DVD set.

 

Poor guy can't win for losing. He finally does what fans have been begging him to do and, in general, the reaction is mosty "I don't want them and I don't care."

 

 

If the guy really wanted to make EVERYONE happy, he would have released both sets simultaneously.

He's right. Those were the last time the original trilogy was for sale in its original form and they were NOT released in widescreen.

There was a widescreen version of the '95 set. My best friend's brother had it. The box had Vader's face on it, and the tapes were packaged side-to-side. There were two versions of the box - a slide-out version and a flip-top version.

I have that set. My wife bought it for me when we started dating many moons ago, in a galaxy yadda yadda yadda. My 4-year-old son loves them.
