TWiB #6: May 8 - May 14

I'm not liking the fact the Nationals are a problem for Cincy right now. Good thing they have offense to counter the pitching woes. The big issue is fans and radio talk wants Junior to play left field, keeping Freel in center and moving Dunn at 1st (a david ortiz caliber player at 1st, btw).

I'm not sure how I feel. Jr./Freel/Kearns is a solid defensive outfield but Hatteberg has been solid at 1st and he has a healthy bat. I still think there has to be a team willing to trade for Griffey Jr. He can still swing the bat and he might still have name value. The Reds have nothing to gain from Junior, as they are winning without him. Yes, he improves the line-up around him but when he's constantly on the DL and potentially taking other good players off the field, he is just a problem. That's the problem for that team...too many good offensive players and very little pitching.

Damn, Matt Murton gets no love. He's batting EIGHTH today. That's correct, the guy with the .369 OBP has the pitcher for protection. Some how, John Mabry's batting fifth, despite not showing much at all in limited play this season.

Frank Thomas finally got hurt, left today's game with a "leg injury" according to Yahoo but I'd assume it's the foot. Biggest issue with this team coming into the year was they had several players with injury historys and the usual suspects (Harden, Bradley) have now all been hurt. Thankfully the A.L. West looks really, really bad this year or the A's would be in big trouble.

I love how Dusty always removes any hope of a comeback. Down 9-0, you know it's not going to happen, but it seems like everytime he yanks a pitcher, he's making a double-switch. So naturally, he lifts Jones, who's been one of the few guys hitting on this trip and replaces him with the black hole of suck that is Freddie Bynum. And it's only the fourth inning. Way to encourage your team/fans, Johnnie.

"You gotta make double switches in the National League, dude."

Oh well. At least he knows how to.

The rumor right now is Jeff Conine for Will Ohman. Ohman's been crap, so it wouldn't be terrible, but I don't think Conine's going to really do much for the Cubs' offense.

Speaking of their offense, they actually score in the first inning for the first time in what seems like ages. Cedeno's leading off tonight and singled and stole a base. Pierre bunted him over to third, which I thought was a bit silly, since a single would probably score him anyway. Oh well, play for one run and that's what you get.

The Os arent going to trade Conine, he just is starting to hit the ball well (ooh..I think his avg is like .230 now) and I think they secretly want his option for next year to kick in by giving him tons of playing time so they can be stuck with an aging veteran that can't play for another year.

And I thought it was funny that right after I posted that they should bring Loewen and Penn up, the Os announcers went on a rant about them, and I think they said that if they do that its conceding the season..WTF? Letting Lopez and Chen go out there and get blasted off of isn't conceding the season as it is? Maybe I over reacted about just releasing them though, they could probably pitch well out of the bullpen and as crappy as the bullpen is, that would be good.

What was the point of calling up Theriot? I know he's not gonna help, but in a wash like this, he's nowhere to be found. And who pinch-hits for the pitcher? Our backup catcher. Smart thinking, Dusty.

Never mind. I didn't realize he came in for Walker. The Cubs may be sporting one of the worst lineups I've ever seen right now. It looks like this:

Neifi Perez

Juan Pierre

Ryan Theriot

Aramis Ramirez

John Mabry

Henry Blanco

Jerry Hairston

Freddie Bynum

Ouch.

My sympathies.

I don't think we'll ever see Dusty in the American League. It's like he has a compulsion for making substitutions.

Ok I haven't been participating in these threads this season but seriously....is anyone else annoyed with this Bonds HR coverage? They keep cutting away so we can see Bonds get walked!

For those who watch ESPN a decent amount: Do they cut away for EVERY at-bat? I mean, if they were showing an NBA playoff game, would they cut away from the fourth quarter to show a five-minute Bonds at-bat?

It's an historic moment in baseball whether you like Bonds or not. I would much prefer to see Bonds tie and break the Babe's record than Skip Bayless screaming about how Vince Young will win three Super Bowls.

They wouldn't cut away from an NBA playoff game for the Bonds thing. They'd just tell you that they're showing it on ESPN2. It's harmless, and possible history. No reason not to want to see it just because you hate the guy.

Junior is off the DL and playing tonight. I have May 21st on my "when does Junior get hurt again" pool. Bucky Dent is the acting manager tonight as well.

They pre-empted Around the Horn and Pardon the Interruption with coverage of his final two plate appearances.

I checked all the ESPN affiliate channels and didn't catch any of the at-bats.

I am praying that Hideki only sprained his wrists and was taken out for a precautionary measure. We should find out later what exactly is the damage.

Yes, Hideki probably will see DL time/miss a game for the first time since 1994. That did not look good at all.

The Yankees are bound for injuries this year. Sheffield has already gone down, and now possibly Matsui. Randy Johnson hasn't looked right either. That's the problem with building around aging veterans... you never know when they are going to start breaking down.

You can make that same comment for every team in baseball except for the Marlins.

Aaron Rowand is a cocksucker, he just took away a 3 run double for Nady. I think he probably broke his nose on the wall when he smashed into it. The catch of the year so far, but still he could have saved his face and taken the 3-0 deficit just the same.

The Yankees have built their team around guys who are at the back ends of the career now for the past few years and it has yet to come back and bite them. I was merely stating that the injury bug is likely to hit them eventually, as they've just been postpoing the inevitable with the construction of their team the past few years. It's not so much a knock as it is an observation.
