NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 When I was in school I remember every class having a phone in it that the teacher had access to, and in a time of emergency they could use it, if need be.

Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Yeah, most schools have telephone systems, wonder of wonders.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Cellphones don't bother anyone, unless you hate them. Honestly, that shit where phones go off happens like once in a blue moon. The only reason it seems that the people that want the banning want the banning is because you just don't like the idea of kids having cellphones. Well sorry grandpa, but it's not a crucial problem, and it isn't bothering anyone. You're exaggerating how much of a problem it is.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 It is bothersome when they go off in classes, and it happens way more then "once in a blue moon." Kids don't need cell phones in school, and I support this ban.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 It happens like once a month, not even. And five seconds of your life in school shouldn't be that bothersome anyway. It's not like your so into the lesson that it's going to throw you off completely. I mean honestly, lets not make it sound like you or anyone else is this student that needs all the lesson time it can get.
Dobbs 3K 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Again, I'll go back to the story of my wife, who is in university grad school, and she had this night class where literally someone's phone would go off almost every class period. This is in college...I gotta imagine it's pretty bad with high school kids.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 I'm in my last year of high school and no, it's no where near like that. That's like a different case. Just like in one school, theres fights all the time. That doesn't mean theres fights all the time everywhere.
SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 It happens like once a month, not even. Made-up statistics are my favorite kind. I've already given all kinds of reason to ban cell phones that have nothing to do with them ringing in class, although that does happen quite frequently in my grad school classes. It never happens at my day job, though. You know why? BECAUSE WE BANNED CELL PHONES.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Made-up? I'm in the environment where this supposedly takes place. I'm not taking stories from my girlfriend, or talking about other schools and what I think happens. I'm in school right now, and hell, it hasn't happened in months. I say for a kid who has to take like twenty trains to school, compared to some kid who cheated on some test, keep the cells. That kid who needs the cellphone for whatever reason afterschool has a good enough case to keep the cell over a kid cheating (which really never happens much either) on a test no one will give a crap about after they take it. I'm not taking stories from my girlfriend, or talking about other schools and what I think happens. I'm in school right now, and hell, it hasn't happened in months. Unless you visited a random sampling of schools and kept a record of every time a cell phone rang, then did the necessary mathematical calculations to convert those findings into a statistical average, its a made-up statistic. SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Nothing, from the sound of it. NYC schools might be a special circumstance given the transportation issues involved, but the rest of the country doesn't have those kinds of problems.
Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted May 22, 2006 Go to school, where it takes place. Man we're going around in circles here. You're right about the transportation stuff.
lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 I mean at what point are students technically still "kids". If a student is 18 and for most purposes an adult, shouldn't that change the way many rules at schools apply to students. The argument that the teachers at my school always made was that when you are in school, "the adminstration and the staff acts as your parents to an extent". At age 18, I was able to vote for school board members and pay taxes and do all these other adult things, but for some reason people think that I can't go through a day of classes without being disruptive with my cell phone. It is an overblown argument, and people who are saying things like kids don't need cell phones, are misguided. Kids don't need television, video games, or countless other technological devices, but the school in some cases endorses the usage of these things on school time
SuperJerk 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 Go to school, where it takes place. Man we're going around in circles here. You're right about the transportation stuff. Because it rarely happens at your school, that's hardly indicative of the rest of the nation. But most kids don't need to take 20 trains to school.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted May 23, 2006 When you're 18, you're only in school for a few more months anyway so who gives a fuck. Well except for me, I graduated when I was 17. A long time ago too apparently, since I don't remember the banning of cell phones to be even a remote problem. You don't need your cell phone, that's what the phones at school are for. Cell phones are a convenience item which were first popularized so you could call for help if your car broke down or (ironically) if you were in an accident while driving. Guest Report post Posted May 23, 2006 students taking picture of others without their knowledge. OH FUCK YES. Someone actually had the nerve to make me a MySpace using my pictures and send messages that could be termed as sexual harrassment. I don't know who did it. Scroby 0 Report post Posted May 24, 2006 Kids shouldn't have cell phones ON while in school. If cell phones are that much a problem then yes a school should ban them. Honestly I look at todays kids and I don't think a handful of them are even smart enough to keep their cell phones off or on vibe. Hell no kid even needs to have their cell phone turned on during school and for anyone whose making an argument that kids NEED to have their cell phones at school, shut up. Did any of us need a cell phone during our school years? Hell no, what did we do if we had to call home? We used the phone either in the classroom or in the office and Dialed 9 first! Your telling me that teachers and people in the office won't let kids use the phone to contact a parent or someone else in case their sick or there's a emerancy? Thats a crock of shit and each of us "elders" know it. Kids do NOT need a cell phone in school.

Thats also a load of crap. Kids don't need their cell phones after school. You can not tell me kids can't find a phone after school. There are a ton of buissness that have no problem letting kids use their phones and there are still pay phones out there. If they don't have any money to use a pay phone, dial 1-800-collect and make a collect call or be cheap and do what I did and leave a message when the collect call asked you to record your name. There isn't a valid excuse on why kids MUST have a cell phone before, during, or after school.
