Oh.

Stupid Canadian. Now no one's ever gonna erase that loser Bobby Thigpen's name from the record books.

I give that record 5 more years at the most.

I don't think Thigpen's record is in serious danger. Managers have backed off from the strict "save only" usage of the reliever, and they are more flexible. It's an odd record in that you can not really dictate the chase like you can with a home run race. Sometimes you go a week or two without a save opportunity.

This A's are very, very close to blowing a 7-0 lead and Phil Nevin just missed tying it by inches as Steve Karsay is out there throwing batting practice.

Heilman the starter might be a false hope. People forget that as a starter (25 career starts), he's 5-13 with a 5.93 ERA.

Kinda late replying to this, but anyway...

It's worth mentioning that the majority of those starts came in his first two years, where all but one of the 19 games he played in were starts. He posted a 6.75 and a 5.46 ERA in 2003 and 2004, respectively. Unfortunately, I can't find his game by game logs for 2005, but I can say with some certainty that his 2005 starts were significantly better than his career line.

2-3, 4.71 ERA last season as a starter.

Just watched Matt Lecroy's performance on Baseball Tonight. Just awful. Matt Lecroy was clearly overmatched behind the plate. Frank Robinson cried at the postgame press conference. Lecroy is really a terrific person, and it was a shame to see him pushed into a spot like that. He's just an emergency catcher really.

Thanks, that's helpful. Maybe his 2005 starts weren't that much better than the rest of his career, but I'm pretty sure he'd still definitely be a step above a Jeremi Gonzalez or a Dave Williams or a Jose Lima.

Did he really cry? I can't tell with you sometimes, Al.

I'm serious. He teared up because he embarassed one of his players.

And to fill in for everyone, Brian Schneider is on the DL and Wiki Gonzalez went down as well. That's why Lecroy was catching in the first place. Robert Fick isn't a full time catcher either.

Holy shit. He cried???!?!?!? Good Lord, Frank Robinson is not a heartless old man. Seriously, I love my Astros and wanted to see em win, but I really did feel sorry for Matt LeCroy. And then when he left, the whole damn stadium stood up and gave him that "mock" applause. I hate when crowds do that, especially when you're the home team.

Did they pull him DURING an inning or in between? All the highlights I've seen completely side-stepped the issue.

They pulled him during the seventh inning. Uh...John Rauch was in and he walked Ensberg, who stole second. LeCroy tried to make a throw but threw it into centerfield for the second time in the game, so right after that, the pitching coach comes out to talk to Rauch to stall for time so Robert Fick can get his gear on and then Frank Robinson came over and pulled LeCroy from the crouch and took him out. It was really embarrassing.

Man, now THAT'S a Chicago Cubs loss. Sorry, Bored.

Oh ya, but I'd resigned myself to the fact that the only way that game could end is a walkoff homerun by the Rangers and it happened.

Two knee jerk reactions to a soul crushing defeat.

1) Huston Street is a one-year wonder.

2) Bobby Crosby is a bust.

If the Rox lose, they will contribute their money to the YMCA of Greater Kansas City to assist in the creation of the Kansas City YMCA Challenger Division Baseball Park, a field designed for children with mental and physical disabilities.

I thought they were already playing in Kauffman Stadium...

I'm not understanding why Frank Robinson cried...

I think LeCroy wildly throwing the ball into CF, and allowing 7 steals is a lot more embarassing than you pulling the guy because he's a dreadful catcher.

Because Robinson was forced to place Lecroy in a position to do that. Robinson felt miserable about placing a player in a spot where he was clearly unsuited. Lecroy's performance was not due to lack of effort or lack of knowledge. He just couldn't do it.

Ten games is a little excessive. Can't he appeal it, and based on the fact that it was Pierzynski, get it knocked down to six?
