slabinskia 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2006 I put this off for the longest time since I consider ecw matches to be a pretty big downgrade in quality. However, they did have some very good stuff mixed in.Keep in mind that I can only include what I have seen.I figured with the relaunch of ecw this would be the perfect time to post this.I will start tomorrow. slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 Yes,I am late. This will be a top 40 since I couldn't come up with 50.sorry.Anyway,here we go. 40. CACTUS JACK VS TERRY FUNK HARDCORE HEAVEN 94 An image that would last on the ecw video package for a long time.A decent brawl between two pros who know how to have a good street fight. Both were perfectly suited for ecw and were very important in giving it some credibility.Funk yells out for someone to throw him a chair during the match. Not only does someone throw him a chair, but, everyone throws him chairs. The match is stopped as a result. It showed just how different the philly crowd was. 39. ROB VAN DAM VS BALLS MAHONEY ANARCHY RULZ 99 1999 was the year rvd broke out as the top guy.It was the year he consistently had the best matches on the card.Yes he had good matches before but he was at his best that year.A perfect example is when he had a good match against an inferior opponent in balls mahoney. An underrated match imo.Unlike the series with lynn,Van Dam carried this one. 38. BALLS MAHONEY VS MASATO TANAKA HARDCORE HEAVEN 2000 Another underrated match where both guys work very stiff and it makes for a cool match.Tanaka was always fun to watch and this was no exception.Of course there are better things to come in this thread regarding tanaka.Still, this one was good. 37. DUDLEY BOYS VS SPIKE DUDLEY/BALLS MAHONEY 7/5/99 This is on the bloodsport dvd.I wasn't expecting much from this but it was a fun brawl.I liked it more than the early years of public enemy and the gangstas. The usual ecw brawl with lots of blood and various weapons. If you like garbage wrestling then you should like this one. 36. SABU VS THE SANDMAN STAIRWAY TO HELL MATCH HOUSE PARTY 98 This is on an old ecw dvd but I forget which one.Well, you got sabu who is known for his cool spots, many of which he misses. And you have the sandman, who misses just as many spots in a match.Throw in a ladder and you should have a real mess.Surprise, this turned out to be a good ladder match which any ecw fan would get into. The blown spots are kept to a minimum and sabu always makes it interesting.Hopefully it will be released on the next ecw dvd because I think it is one of their better matches. Ok,more to come later.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted June 1, 2006 I would have put Tanaka/Ballz in my top 10, maybe even top 5. I didn't like Ballz/RVD the first time I saw it, but the second time I enjoyed the heck out of it - it gets a lot of unwarranted flack, IMO.
cabbageboy 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2006 Damn, I need to check out that Hardcore Heaven 2000 show again. I mostly remember Tanaka and Balls beating the shit out of each other with chairs. RVD and Balls had loads of fun matches. The Anarchy Rulz match in my view gets flack because it simply wasn't the advertised match, but instead a match that had been on plenty of ECW TV shows over the past year before it. I kinda wanted to see RVD vs. Johnny Smith, since I'd long heard of Smith but had not seen him in action. To me, 1998 was RVD's breakout year. With Shane Douglas injured for most of it Van Dam was really the guy who kept the company credible as TV champion. He and Sabu were also PWI's runner up for tag team of the year (to the New Age Outlaws....I ask you guys, who would YOU take in a fight?).
slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 2, 2006 35. TOMMY DREAMER VS C.W. ANDERSON GUILTY AS CHARGED 01 This was the last ppv for ecw before they folded up shop. While the ppv didn't mean anything, this match delivered. The usual solid effort from tommy and anderson was better than usual. This was the only match where I bought into c.w. anderson as a serious heel. 34. REY MYSTERIO JR VS JUVENTUD GUERRERA BIG ASS EXTREME BASH While they didn't stay long, rey, juvy, and psychosis torn the house down whenever they met. This was great for the time. While it doesn't have the same impact now,it is still a good match.More importantly,it led to the lucha stars going to wcw where they had even better matches. 33. JERRY LYNN VS JUSTIN CREDIBLE HEATWAVE 98 This one is interesting. It was the opening match on ppv between two new guys. They put on a very good opener.A good match to get the crowd in it.The problem would come two years later when they were positioned in the main event.I agree with what raven said in one of his shoot interviews. Both guys were great when they were positioned in the middle of the card but didn't have what it took to be the main event guys.Anyway, this is one that I think gets overlooked.Worth a look if you haven't seen it. 32. ROB VAN DAM VS SABU DOCTOR IS IN 96 This is the stretcher match. These two had great chemestry. Both know how to put on a spotfest. That is what all of their matches were.Great spotfests. This was the best of the bunch imo.RVD's moves seemed so different at the time.Too bad he hasn't changed them up much in 10 years. 31. ROB VAN DAM/SABU VS ELIMINATORS CROSSING THE LINE AGAIN 97 Speaking of guys with cool offense. The eliminators were a great team in 97.Their total elimination finisher was a favorite of mine. They were perfect opponents for rvd/sabu.Throw ladders into the mix and you have a pretty cool stunt show. This is on the bloodsport dvd and was better than I expected.Bischoff should have taken cronus to wcw with saturn as I didn't think one was very good without the other. slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2006 30. SABU VS TERRY FUNK VS SHANE DOUGLAS NIGHT THE LINE WAS CROSSED 94 You can point to this as ecw's first big match. They hype around this was that the match went an hour. While it's no flair/steamboat,it is pretty good.I liked all of the post match stuff with shane throwing the belt at funk. 29. SABU VS TERRY FUNK BORN TO BE WIRED I think this is one where you either like it or you don't.The ending of this match with both guys completely wrapped in barb wire is pretty amazing. It's also the only good barb wire match ecw has had.If you like blood and gore, this one is for you. 28. MIKE AWESOME VS SPIKE DUDLEY GUILTY AS CHARGED 2000 I can see 95% of you seeing this match listed and declaring the list a joke.Hopefully the other 5 % can back me on this match. It should have been over in the first 30 seconds.Awesome treats spike like such a jobber here. This is an extended squash match and it's done in style. 27. CHRIS JERICHO VS PITBUL 2 HARDCORE HEAVEN 96 This is the first ecw match I saw when they first started airing it in my area.Jericho didn't last long in ecw but he put on some good matches while he was there. He carries pitbul 2 to a good match here.Funny how when I first saw this I thought the pitbul was playing the heel champ.I didn't know the pitbuls were faces at the time.Jericho wins the tv belt here. 26. SUPER CRAZY VS TAJIRI LIVING DANGEROUSLY 99 A very cool 10 minute spotfest here. This would be heymans second attempt with the cruiserweights after rey/psychosis left.Tajiri and super crazy put on a good match every time they were in the ring together. This is no exception.
slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 3, 2006 25. TAZ VS SABU LIVING DANGEROUSLY 99 For all the matches these two had together, this is the only one I liked. It is tons better than the barely legal match imo.I haven't seen this one get much positive feedback. It's unfortunate because it's a good one. 24. CACTUS JACK VS MIKEY WHIPWRECK BIG ASS EXTREME BASH Mick Foley's sendoff match. He had a number of good ecw matches and this one was one of his better ones.Mikey was always underrated as I think he could hold his own against a good opponent.I liked cactus farewell speech following the match too. 23. REY MYSTERIO JR VS PSYCHOSIS NOVEMBER 2 REMEMBER 95 I enjoyed all of the rey/psychosis matches in ecw.The problem is when you compare them to their wcw matches. If you just watch the match without making comparisons,it is pretty good and was one of the highlights for ecw in 1995. 22. EDDY GUERRERRO VS 2 COLD SCORPIO 3 WAY DANCE Talk about bringing some workrate to a company known for garbage matches. That is what eddy did.He and malenko almost always had the match of the night regardless of who they were facing. When you put eddy in there against a quality opponent like scorpio, good things happen. This was very good by ecw standards. If you haven't seen it before, check it out. 21. STEVIE RICHARDS VS SANDMAN VS TERRY FUNK BARELY LEGAL Sorry but I liked it.It was so much better than anyone could have expected.I was shocked to see it get 20 minutes but it played out perfectly.By far the best match the sandman has ever been in.While it may be a seperate match,I have to include that raven entered right after funk won the match and funk winning the title is an extra bonus for this one. Ok,half way there. What are everyones thoughts and or complaints. Also, any ideas for the next list after ecw is completed ?

The setup was good to with Mike Awesome knocking out the front teeth of Spike's girlfriend. I am surprised that Spike could walk after this match considering all of the tables he went through. slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2006 20. TAZ VS SHANE DOUGLAS GUILTY AS CHARGED 99 A very underrated match imo.Taz wins the belt here.I think most wrote this off as another garbage match but I think it was well done.I have no problem putting it in the top 20. 19. REY MYSTERIO JR VS PSYCHOSIS 10/7/95 This is on either the rey dvd or the rise and fall dvd.I would say this is a little better than the n2r match. This was considered great stuff for the time.Like I said with their other match, you will like it as long as you don't compare it to the wcw match. 18. SHANE DOUGLAS VS 2 COLD SCORPIO MATTER OF RESPECT 96 One of the first ecw matches I saw so this one remains a favorite of mine.Scorpio was still pretty good in 96 and this was one of shane's better matches.Shane wins the tv belt here.I like the post match stuff where shane wants scorpio to put the belt around his waist.Good stuff. 17. TAZ VS MIKE AWESOME VS MASATO TANAKA ANARCHY RULZ 99 A pretty famous match as it was taz' unofficial exit out of ecw.Once he is eliminated,awesome/tanaka go into their usual great match.Every time those two went against each other,it was a good match. This was no exception. 16. CHRIS BENOIT VS AL SNOW DOUBLE TABLES 95 Benoit was the man for the short time he was in ecw.Snow was pretty green at the time and benoit destroys him for 15 minutes. It is really fun to watch al snow take such a beating. This has become a very popular match among ecw fans. While I don't consider it to be THAT great,it is one of ecw's better matches and a must have for any benoit fan. Guest Coffey Report post Posted June 6, 2006 I would have put Tanaka/Ballz in my top 10, maybe even top 5. I didn't like Ballz/RVD the first time I saw it, but the second time I enjoyed the heck out of it - it gets a lot of unwarranted flack, IMO. Balls & RVD had a really sick match on TNN too. I can't remember which match is which anymore but in one of them, RVD took a top rope TAKA Driver, or whatever Balls called it, and then sold it like he does every piledriver. It was gross. slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2006 15. ROB VAN DAM/JERRY LYNN VS THE IMPACT PLAYERS HEAT WAVE 99 After the van dam/lynn series, rvd could do no wrong in the eyes of ecw fans.Also,storm/credible got over as the impact players. This was a good one with 2 good wrestlers in lynn/storm,rvd with his highspots, and aldo montoya. While rvd was the tv champ,he was the real main eventer for the company.Any combination of these four usually produced a good match and this was one of the best ones. 14. JERRY LYNN VS LANCE STORM ANARCHY RULZ 99 Anarchy Rulz was a very underrated ppv with 3 very good matches and a solid ppv throughout. This was the opener and showed who carried who in the rvd/lynn matches.I'm surprised this didn't get more votes in the top matches of the 90s poll.It deserved to be top 20 for sure. 13. SABU VS 2 COLD SCORPIO CYBERSLAM 96 The best sabu match I can remember. They go 30 minutes and the blown spots are kept to a minimum.Scorpio had a pretty good streak of good matches in ecw and this was one of his best. This is on one of the dvds but I forget which one. 12. RAVEN VS TOMMY DREAMER WRESTLEPALOOZA 97 A pretty famous match with an even more famous post match angle. The best feud in ecw history with this being the last match.Raven was on his way out and dreamer finally got his win.Of course the best part was when lawler showed up after the match for the best angle ecw ran imo. 11. ROB VAN DAM VS JERRY LYNN LIVING DANGEROUSLY 99 I think this was the first match.Even if it wasn't,it was the match to start the feud and the game of can you top this. This match got jerry lynn more over and elevated rvd to main event status. The match goes to a draw and van dam wins in overtime.Great stuff. Enigma 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2006 Why the hell do you mash together a period with the first letter of the next sentence with no space in between? That annoys the fucking shit out of me.
slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2006 10. MIKE AWESOME VS MASATO TANAKA HEATWAVE 98 I liked every match between these two but I think this was the best. What a ppv heatwave 98 was btw. More awesome/tanaka matches would be on here if I saw tnn. I always found mike awesome to be overrated and felt that tanaka carried their matches. Anyone agree ? 9. THE PITBULLS VS RAVEN/STEVIE RICHARDS GANGSTAS PARADISE Many think this is the best ecw match ever. I don't think it's as good as the 8 I listed ahead of it but it's still great regardless. So many storylines were thrown into this match. Raven decides to make it the best of 3 falls and that would be a mistake. While I find most ecw brawls to be sloppy and sometimes boring, this was done with style. You have to love alfonzo trying to enforce rules here. It was a nice touch. 8. RAVEN/CACTUS JACK VS TOMMY DREAMER/TERRY FUNK NOVEMBER 2 REMEMBER 95 The highlight of cactus jack in ecw. Foley cut one of the best promos of all time on dreamer. This was the match to end the feud. You still had dreamer feuding with raven so you had that storyline too. Throw terry funk in there and you have a great street fight. Any surprise that my favorite ecw streetfight includes cactus jack ? 7. STEINERS/EDDY GUERRERRO VS DEAN MALENKO, 2 COLD SCORPIO, CACTUS JACK WRESTLEPALOOZA 95 How can you go wrong with the talent in this match. I'm not sure how many people have seen this one but it deserves its place in the top 10. I didn't even know the steiners were in ecw until I saw this. Of course anything involving dean and eddy was gold that year. 6. ROB VAN DAM VS JERRY LYNN HARDCORE HEAVEN 99 One of the better feuds in ecw, this turned into the game of can you top this. These matches elevated jerry lynn and made rvd the top guy in the company. By this point they knew the counter move to each others counter moves. Stalling does hurt this a bit but otherwise this is a great match.
BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2006 Good list so far...but it will be for naught if they don't have the Fatal Four Way with Jericho/Pitbull 2/Scorpio/Douglas when "The Franchise" was born that night in the top 5.

MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2006 It's too bad ya didn't see ECW on TNN because there was also a great ECW Championship Match between Justin Credible and Tajiri. slabinskia 0 Report post Posted June 11, 2006 5. TAKA MICHINOKU,DICK TOGO,TERRY BOY VS GREAT SASUKE,GRAN HAMADA,MASATO YAKUSHIJI BARELY LEGAL I'm sure many will question why this isn't number one. I am not a huge fan of michinoku pro so I would sooner watch the 4 matches I have ahead of this. Having said that, this is an awesome match and you knew going into the ppv this would be the match of the night. They completely outclassed the ecw roster. This also led to taka and sasuke getting their match in wwf and taka getting a wwf contract. 4. ROB VAN DAM VS BAM BAM BIGELOW 4/4/98 I would call this the unofficial start of rvd's monster babyface push and the longest tv title reign in ecw history. I never really considered bigelow an ecw guy since he spent so much time in wwf. This was his best match in ecw and he and rvd had great chemistry together. 3. SHANE DOUGLAS VS PITBUL 2 VS 2 COLD SCORPIO VS CHRIS JERICHO HEATWAVE 96 Several storylines combined in this match. Douglas feuded with scorpio for the tv belt. Douglas then lost the belt to pitbul 2. Then pitbul 2 lost to jericho. This match was the result of all of that. I think douglas was the second best heel for ecw behind raven. Shane may not have hit it big in the wwf but he was awesome on the mic and pretty good in the ring in ecw. Francine turns on the pitbulls at the end which turns into a long feud between shane and the pitbulls. Great stuff here. This has always been a favorite of mine. 2. DEAN MALENKO VS EDDY GUERRERRO 8/26/95 I'm guessing everyone saw this by now. They went out of their way to make this match feel special. The final ecw match for both guys. Joey gives the intros which is a nice touch. This feud proved that actual wrestling could get over with the ecw crowd.I think having the match go a draw was the right move as it didn't matter who won or lossed. The post match speech by malenko really adds to the greatness of this one. One of the best ecw moments imo. 1. DEAN MALENKO VS EDDY GUERRERRO HOSTILE CITY SHOWDOWN 95 That's right. I have them back to back at # 1 and #2. The reason why that final match was given special treatment and the fans showed so much respect for both guys was because they continued to give matches like this one. The argument can be made that this match was just as good if not better than anything the wwf or wcw gave that year. No brawling. No chairs. No tables. Just great mat wrestling that got over huge with the crowd because it was done so well. I didn't even have to think about this one. It is hands down the best ecw match ever imho. OK, thoughts on the list and any ideas for my next list ?
