NHL 2006 Off-Season...

Recommended Posts

Well tonight is the end of hockey season, so let's ship our focus to the off-season.

How is your team going fair in the free agent market?

The Calgary Flames have a really good cap-situation which will allow us to land some much needed offensive help for Jarome Iginla.

Big name free agent's include

Joe Sakic

Rob Blake

Patrick Elias

Anson Carter

Joffrey Lupul

Andy MacDonald

Martin Gerber

Brendan Shanahan

And there are more, those were names just off the top of my head.

The Kings are supposed to be going after either Luongo or Elias.

Their cap situation is very good, with a few top-flight prospects in the pipeline. They're likely to be trading their first round pick. Avery and Belanger are RFAs and they can fucking leave. I don't know much about the Kings RFA situation, but they'll likely be keeping all but those 2.

I have a free agent list, there's tons more. Gaborik is likely to leave the Wild as an RFA.

Hold on, I'll post the free agent list.

Unrestricted Free Agents, and I'll add important RFAs that I can think of on my own.

Lupul and McDonald are both RFA's. Anaheim has the rights to match any deal they get and I expect Burke to do so. McDonald excelled last season and Lupul is only 22 with a year under his belt.

Restricted free agents: Andrew Alberts, D, 25; Patrice Bergeron, C, 20; Brad Boyes, RW, 24; Nick Boynton, D, 27; Milan Jurcina, D, 23; Josh Langfeld, RW, 28; Pat Leahy, RW, 26; Andrew Raycroft, G, 26; Nathan Robinson, LW, 24; David Tanabe, D, 25.

Unrestricted free agents: Mariusz Czerkawski, RW, 34; Tom Fitzgerald, RW, 37; Hal Gill, D, 31; Eric Healey, LW, 31; Brad Isbister, LW, 29; Dan LaCouture, LW, 29; Brian Leetch, D, 38; Ian Moran, D, 33; Eric Nickulas, RW, 31; Marty Reasoner, C, 29; Jiri Slegr, D, 35.

Those are the Bruins guys (from thn). I helpfully bolded the guys that will hopefully be kept around.

edit- I don't know why Czerkawski is on here. He (thankfully) signed somewhere in Europe. May he be hit by BMW.

There is, but only to teams that are eligible. I'll be damned if I'm reading the CBA to figure it out.

Important free agents/trade bait that everyone thinks are gone from their team or are likely to be...

Datsyuk, Luongo, Giguere, Glen Murray, Savard, Redden or Chara, Havlat, Bulis, McKee, Allison, Belfour, Desjardins, Gerber, Recchi, Weight, Kubina, Daze, Shanahan, Legace, Witt, Blake, Peca, Gaborik, Jovanovski, Jarkko Ruutu, Salei, Arnott, Parrish, Roenick, Kvasha, Raycroft, Boynton, Bertuzzi, Frolov.

That's all I can think of now.

Minnesota and Phoenix have a TON of cap space.

That's why I don't know.

And, in unrelated news, Lance Armstrong wrote an 8 page letter to the IOC insisting they get rid of Dick Pound. Bettman should do the same.

Copied and pasted, because I don't understand it all that well.

There's an informative article in the 8/1/2005 issue of Sports Business Journal [http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/ ]that tackles the whole "midpoint" issue with regards to NHL revenue sharing, escrow, and payrolls. Obviously the confusion about this goes beyond this message board; the article states, "even some of the people who negotiated the deal confess they don't fully understand it all." To summarize the article:

Each year the league sets a payroll midpoint, equaling 54% of the avg. club's revenue

Teams can spend up to $8 mill. above or below the midpoint (the range is slightly higher for the 2005-06 season)

Since teams can spend anywhere in this $16 mill. range, there's a high probability that total compensation of players will be greater than 54%

To protect against such overpayment, the league requires a portion of each player's salary to be set in escrow; that money will be used as one of several sources to fund revenue sharing, which is designed to allow representative and competitive payrolls

Clubs start with 54% of their own revenues for payroll, and revenue sharing makes up the difference.

There are two batches of revenue sharing:

First batch - equal to 4.5% of league revenues (estimated to be $78 mill. this season); this batch aims to allow clubs to afford payrolls of $4 mill. below the midpoint; it is funded by league media revenue, playoff gate receipts, escrow funds, and top-grossing clubs

Second batch - designed to help clubs get to the midpoint but not over it; funded by excess escrow funds, if available

Any leftover escrow funds are to be distributed evenly between all 30 NHL clubs.

An example: a club has revenue of $50 mill. in a season when the midpoint is set at $32 mill. They would be able to afford a payroll of only $27 mill. (54% of their revenue) "in the league's eyes." They would receive, as the first batch of revenue sharing, $1 mill. from the league to get to within $4 mill. of the $32 mill. midpoint. The second batch (if they are eligible--see below), would provide up to an additional $4 mill., bringing them to the $32 mill. midpoint.

Rules:

Any club in the bottom half of revenues is eligible for the first batch (regardless of payroll amount)

Any club spending over the midpoint on player salaries is not eligible for the second batch

Clubs in markets with more than 2.5 mill. TV households are ineligible for revenue sharing

By the third year of the deal, clubs will have to grow revenues faster than the league avg. and have attendance of 75% of capacity to be eligible for their full revenue-sharing allotment

By the fourth year, the required attendace capacity increases to 80%

That's essentially the article. It doesn't answer every question but hopefully is a start at understanding this complex agreement.

The midpoint during this past season was 28.6 million dollars.\

The attached file is the NHL draft guide. It's useful.

They did, but he reneged on the condition that his wife didn't want to stay in Toronto.

So, they don't know what's going to happen.

MANCHESTER, NH – The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have hired Mike O’Connell as a Pro Scout and Player Development Consultant, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today.

Thank God it wasn't capologist like people were thinking. He'll still be living in Boston.

I heard that the Detroit Red Wings are interested in Martin Gerber. I don't know if this was before his collapse in the playoffs or not. I still think he is a talented goalie.

Maybe Detroit will have an interest in Raycroft to satiate the fans' bloodlust to dump Andrew after one lackluster season.

They're interested in Luongo too. I've heard the Kings want to talk to Gerber, Belfour and Luongo.

NHL Awards ceremony takes place this Thursday, and Hockey Hall of Fame selections will be made on June 28. I don't know if there'll be a separate thread for the awards or not... however, I'll post a big list of leading players eligible for the HHOF in here later on.

I read somewhere that the Leafs want to sign Legace.

I've heard that too. But that seems like a gamble, doesn't it? Especially with all the potential goalies on the market this summer.

Is he ready to be a full-time starter yet?(In Hogtown, no less) I mean, yeah, Detroit did have a great year, but look who was in front of him.

Sens got a tough choice to make. One option rumored around here is copying last year and signing both Redden and Chara then trading one for someone who fits the cap like we did with Hossa. I don't see it working as well a second time though.

I'd love to go after Shanahan as his type of grit and winning pedigree is just what the Sens need as guidance, especially ocne the playoffs come around.

#1 priority though: Spezza and one of the big 2 D guys.

TSN.ca reports Sakic has re-upped for a year, as has Manny Maholtra with Columbus.

Vigneault will be named the coach of Vancouver this afternoon, and Kirk Muller will be joining the Habs as an assistant bench boss.

I don't know if Darryl Sutter will be Calgary's coach next season. Alot of people are saying he will step down and remain GM, and hire his brother Brett. But who knows.

Any NHL draftniks out there?

Yes.

Keenan has officially put Luongo on the trading block.

Rumored destinations are Ottawa, Detroit, LA and Vancouver. I like that the Kings are seemingly becoming players in trade talks.

So, draft questions:

Is Erik Johnson REALLY the best d-man in the past 15 years, or is this standard draft hype? He's come out of nowhere in the past six months to become the top prospect, but he's facing a lower level of competition in the US NTDP.

What did Kessel do to deserve dropping so far in the CSS and ISS reports? All he did was win the Freshman of the Year award for Minnesota last year, and he drops from "The American Crosby" to "huge bust risk". Honestly, I can see the Pens picking him at 2, and I think he will be huge on either Crosby or Malkin's wing a year or two down the line.

Is Jordan Staal the most hugely overrated prospect in recent memory? The guy has a brother who just led his team to the Cup and another brother who was picked in the first round last year. However, so much of Jordan's production seems like it's projected. He's got some skills, no doubt, but would he be a mid-late 1st rounder if not for his name? On his scouting reports, I'm hearing things like "he's ahead of where his brother was physically", but his game isn't nearly as dominant for the Petes as Eric's was. Is he really worth the top pick?

Could Backstrom, Brassard, or Toews sneak into the top 3?

Anyone think there's any truth to the rumor that the Canes are trying to trade into the Penguins' #2 spot to pick Jordan -- with Jack Johnson as the bait?

Draft weekend is awesome.

No, but he is a future star.

Honestly, I can see the Pens picking him at 2, and I think he will be huge on either Crosby or Malkin's wing a year or two down the line.

I see him dropping to the Blackhawks personally, but it's very unwarranted. Some teams have terrible draft picks for what they need, like the Islanders and Wild.

Staal's very overrated and I think Backstrom is the best forward in the draft. Staal's overrated because so many people think of the Staal's as hardworkers and winners. Most overrated guy in the entire draft is Nigel Williams.

If the Kings stay at 11, I want them to draft Okposo or Frolik, if either one are there.

Another odd offseason rumor floating around is that Elias wants to be wherever Havlat will be.

I actually kind of hope that the Hurricanes target either Chara or Redden. Either one would provide a major upgrade on our defense.

I don't know what to make of the trade rumor. Two Staal brothers would be great, but I have heard ALOT of great things about Jack Johnson's potential.

TSN has a list of every team's players that are under contract next season, gives you an idea of what type of money they have available to spend this offseason.

Rod Brind'Amour -- $3.99 million

Oleg Tverdovsky -- $2.5 million

Bret Hedican -- $2.432 million

Mark Recchi -- $1.995 million

Cory Stillman -- $1.75 million

Ray Whitney -- $1.5 million

Josef Vasicek -- $1.15 million

Kevyn Adams -- $725,000

Andrew Ladd -- $688,940

Cam Ward -- $684,000

Anton Babchuk -- $675,500

That totals $18 million, so the 'Canes have about $26 million in cap room. Re-signing Eric Staal and Erik Cole will be top priority. I have heard that Frantisek Kaberle and Justin Williams, along with Martin Gerber, could sign elsewhere.

I totally forgot the Florida Panthers even existed.

LOL! THANKS FOR KEEPING US UPDATED!!!

More importantly,

Another rumor floating around with some credibility: are the B's really thinking of trading out of the #5 spot for a 2nd line C and a top 4 d-man?

While I don't think they're actively trying to make this trade, I think Gorton is listening to offers. If the right offer came along, I'm sure they'd look at it. But it HAS to get them a guaranteed top six forward AND at least a top pairing defenseman. If not the defenseman, I'd say another good pick. But I think they're more than happy with staying at #5 and taking whichever player is left (I think they're hoping Backstrom falls to #5).
