Austin City Limits Festival 2006

Recommended Posts

Yeah, so I just bought tickets for the 2006 Austin City Limits festival taking place Sept. 15-17 in Austin. I went last year by unforseen hurricane circumstances and the lineup was friggin' stacked. It was easily the best musical experience of my life. A brief summary of performers I can recall off the top of my head include: The Arcade Fire (I actually saw them twice that weekend, once at ACL and once at Stubb's BBQ in Austin), The Black Keys (Saw them twice, too.), The Black Crowes, The Allman Brothers, Oasis, Wilco, Coldplay, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Decemberists, Blues Traveler, John Prine, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle, Drive-By Truckers, Built to Spill, The Walkmen, M83, The Fiery Furnaces, Tortoise, Bob Mould and more. It was wonderful, with cheaply priced for festivals merchandise and refreshments and a good cross-section of people. A few performers couldn't make it due to the hurricanes, but nobody I cared to see. Last year, I didn't get tickets until like..the day before the festival and had to pay $150 each for two tickets. This year, I got two tickets for $115 each, which, as the ACL website tells me translates to 88 cents a band. This year's festival looks to be ridiculously good as well. The lineup includes (but is not limited to):

Tom Petty

Willie freakin' Nelson

Van Morrison

Massive Attack

The Flaming Lips

The Shins

Gnarls Barkley

Cat Power

Damian Marley

Iron & Wine

Calexico

The New Pornographers

Son Volt

Deadboy and the Elephantmen

Stars

Wolf Parade

Sparklehorse

Nada Surf

The Raconteurs

The Secret Machines

Aimee Mann

Explosions in the Sky

and a buncha local bands and probably more to be added later.

I have no particular discussion to bring about with this topic, I just like to share.

Edit: Took the freakin' outta Van Morrison cuz he doesn't like "Brown-Eyed Girl" and added it to Willie Nelson, cuz he's Willie Nelson.

If he does "Domino", "Brown-Eyed Girl", and "Gloria" complete with audience participation, he deserves the " Freakin' ".

Damn. Now I'm gonna have to take the "freakin'" out, but I still get to see Willie Nelson. I saw him at the Houston Livestock Rodeo a couple years ago (cuz that's how we rednecks get down), and he was pretty awesomely good.

Yeah, I'm excited to see Damian Marley. I can only imagine how down he shall get. I saw Wolf Parade not too long ago and, although I really like their CD, I can't say I was that impressed with their live show, but they'll probably be better with 30,000 screaming Austinians.

Its definitly not as good a lineup as this year's Bonnaroo (though it is better than both Coachella & Lolla), which was probably the best lineup for any American festivale since Coachella '04. The fact that theres no camping will require hotel rooms for any non-locals, thus making it more expensive than Bonnaroo.

Really solid lineup though...especially with rarities like Massive Attack on the bill. One can also assume that Iron/Wine and Calexico will do a few songs together.

Have fun.

What was Bonaroo's lineup again?

For $115 bucks a ticket, Iron & Wine and Calexico better do some songs together. That CD is amazing.

Edit: Looking at Bonnaroo's lineup, they had a pretty damn good roster of artists. I wish Sonic Youth and Elvis Costello were gonna be in Austin.

Roo also had Petty with Stevie Nicks...Amadou & Miriam, Radiohead, Costello/Toussaint, and others that are somewhat rare treats for we Americans...

At 115$ and you living in Texas, ACL is a very good idea. I wish some of those bands had been in TN two weeks ago...I wont be able to make it to ACL.

Yeah, the $115 price tag is really cheap considering the number of bands and the going rate for other festival (Wasn't Bonnaroo close to $200 for a ticket?), but that's supplemented by the crazy ridiculous Austin traffic and hotel room cost. It's also cool because all during ACL weekend, most of the bands play at the clubs in and around Austin. I remember at last year's festival, my girlfriend and I met the guy from the Arcade Fire that looks like Napoleon Dynamite during The Walkmen's set. He was totally flirting with a large crowd of 15 year old girls.

Roo was 209$ including all the fees...that included camping for four nights too. I spent another few hundred on gas, food...and, uh, other items.

I suppose the prices would be about equal when you factor in a hotel...but you wont have to travel as far.

Its really cool that American festivals are getting so fucking good.

I'm reviving my previously dead topic to mention how much better ACL just got for me this past week. For one...Sufjan Stevens is playing in Austin (but not at ACL) on Sept. 15th, the first nite of the festival. Me and my lady are going to see him, and we only are going to miss John Mayer and Van "non-freakin'" Morrisson. Then, we find out today that TV on the Radio are now playing the second day of the festival. They're only playing for 45 minutes, but still...

So, anyway, now, I get to see Wolf Parade, Gnarls Barkley, Massive Attack, TV on the Radio, various members of Broken Social Scene in various incarnations, Sufjan Stevens, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Iron and Wine, and the Flaming Lips all in the span of a weekend. If only Arcade Fire were going to be there again...

Tom Petty rocks. His songs will live forever.

Explosions in the Sky did the musical score for Friday Night Lights. They are very good also.

Judging from the list though, looks like last year had bigger names.

Austin City Limits used to be a country show on PBS.

I like SoundStage better than ACL, but ACL still has produced occasional good material in recent years.

Yeah, I listened to Tom Petty's new CD today, and I like his newer stuff more than Neil Young's newer stuff.

I dig Explosions in the Sky, but they're playing at the same time as Iron & Wine, and I dig Iron & Wine more. "Friday Night Lights" was a great movie. Tim McGraw was a good asshole.

Austin City Limits last year did have some more big names, but some of the big names they had last year, I had no interest in, whereas this year, there's more uh...mid-name bands I wanna see.

Austin City Limits still comes on PBS, but I haven't seen it since M. Ward was on it last year.
