treble 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 Yeah, trying to be optimistic and all that jazz, but being realistic, the only way the Jays make it this year is to go on an amazing hot streak and hope that both the Yankees and Red Sox go into a huge funk.
Guest Smues Report post Posted July 8, 2006 Watching last years home run derby on ESPN right now reminds me that I need to mute this years if Berman is announcing again. His awfulness is beyond words.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 The Derby has become more stale with each passing year. We've pretty much seen it all and there's a real sense of burnout by time everything's said and done.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 The way that Buck, Timmay and Ken Rosenthal are ripping Manny for not going to the All-Star game, you'd think he pissed on Bud Selig's desk and wiped his ass with the "Sanctity of Baseball" cloth that hangs on the wall of his office. It's obvious that he may not need to go on the DL for his sore knee, but he has missed a game or two. And call me crazy, but I'd rather see my team's 30+ homer 120+ rbi machine playing down the stretch rather than expending energy on a fucking exhibition game. Buck even went as far to use the apparent "respect issue" that Manny has with baseball because he's been elected to the All-Star team and hasn't gone three times. And if he's the top vote-getter, he owes it to the fans. Does he, Joe? Does he really? Or maybe since most of the votes came from the fucking Red Sox fans that are fans of the team, maybe he owes it to THEM to rest up, not get hurt and be a contributor down the stretch in the season? Rosenthal said (I'm paraphrasing here) that "the top vote-getter needs to be in the 'most important showcase' in major league baseball." Hey Ken. Pull your head out of your ass. Last time I checked the fucking CHAMPIONSHIP is more important than a game in the middle of the week that nobody watches. Idiot. Go make up another trade rumor. I'd listen to the game on XM, but it's the White Sox feed. Not much better.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted July 8, 2006 The Derby has become more stale with each passing year. We've pretty much seen it all and there's a real sense of burnout by time everything's said and done. With most of the upper echelon guys dropping out, it's getting very close to slam dunk competition stale. As for me, I'd much prefer bringing back the old Home Run Derby show where you'd win $500 for winning.
Mik 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 I still enjoy the homerun derby. I thought last years was great w/ Abreu and I'm really looking to see what Cabrera can do this year.

"Why should Manny be playing? Such a meaningless, meaningless game. Woody, why are people criticizing him?". "Skip, you know why you're saying that? Because you're a Red Sox fan". He doesn't have to play. The point is, he's collecting the All-Star bonus and not even showing up. The media decides that it's more an issue of him "disrespecting" the fans, so the bonus thing gets overlooked.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 The fact that he's not even appearing at the game is a sign that it's more about him not wanting to be there than his injured knee. If people are going to waste their votes on him and he's getting a bonus specifically for making the All-Star team, he should at least be there. And with the way the rosters are managed in the game, he'd be in there for what, three or four innings?
Cartman 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 1. He's hurting 2. He couldn't care less about the fans. 3. He couldn't care less about the league. 4. He couldn't care less about the media. 5. He likes playing baseball and he likes his money. The All Star game is a garbage waste of time and is a miserable 3 day span with no meaningful sports being played. Get rid of it please. Along with the Pro Bowl, and the NBA/NHL AS games too.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 He gets the bonus because he made the All-Star team. Whether he goes or not, he gets it. BFD. Athletes get performance clauses all the time. A certain number of AB's, certain innings pitched gets them a certain dollar amount. Whether they're playing for their team or whether they're pitching for the bonus, we don't care. Manny's played well enough to warrant a selection to the All-Star game. Great. Congratulations to him. But if he doesn't want to go, he doesn't have to go. He'd rather take the time off and be able to help his real team win real games instead of screwing around in fucking Pittsburgh on a tuesday night in a game that nobody's going to watch. Who cares how long he'll be in the game for? All it takes is one step, one swing, one throw to injure himself. If he and Tito think it's serious enough to keep him from an All-Star game, so be it. There doesn't need to be a disabled list stint for him. The same thing happens in the NFL every year. Players get selected to the pro bowl and one by one, they back out of it for different reasons (family, injury risk, exhaustion, etc.etc.) They're given a free pass because they don't want to go play a full contact practice, but Manny's dogged for doing the same thing. It's bullshit.

jwest27 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 So they bring in....Roy Oswalt as relief? And he immediatley gives up a home run to Pujols. That was an awesome sequence of events.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 Oswalt just pitched nine innings on Wednesday. Garner must be looking at the Dusty Baker playbook. Not confirmed yet, but I heard through the grapevines that Kerry Wood as a torn rotator cuff. If this is true, it makes the MRI a couple weeks back look shady. vivalaultra 0 Report post Posted July 8, 2006 That was...very bizzare to say the least. I thought it was neat that Roy was throwing 97 mph after pitching a damn complete game 3 days ago. I thought it wasn't neat that Pujols did it again. If we were gonna give up a homer to Pujols, why couldn't Russ Springer do it?

Guest Felonies! Report post Posted July 9, 2006 I'd listen to the game on XM, but it's the White Sox feed. Not much better. Ed Farmer sounds like he's grumpy because you just woke him up from a nap. A USA Today article from last year had him as part of the best radio team in the AL. Give me a fucking break.

Did the All-Star Game suddenly become more hazardous than the other 162 games? Is the warning track replaced with lava? He can at least show up for one stinkin' at-bat, especially since he's getting paid to. You probably voted for him 25 times, too.

Guest Felonies! Report post Posted July 9, 2006 The idea of Manny Ramirez hurting himself in the All-Star Game is just funny to me, since it's not like he's putting his body on the line out there in games that matter during the season. Has there even been a serious injury in an All-Star Game since Pete Rose railroaded that one catcher?

Has there even been a serious injury in an All-Star Game since Pete Rose railroaded that one catcher? Consider how many players get hurt doing everyday actions like -Putting on cowboy boots. -Frost-bite in august via falling asleep on ice-pack -Crashing through a glass table after a nightmare -Sneezing. -Ironing a t-shirt that was still being worn -Unwrapping a DVD -Attempting to tear a phone book in half -Flipping channels on the remote control -Punching a trash-can -Undoing a bra strap -Rubbing chili juice into eyes -Tanning -Vomiting -E-Mailing -Infected tattoo What can Manny do on the field that he couldn't do off the field? He's safer playing then giving him 3 days to himself.
