I think the Arcade Fire has a fairly unique sound. Not totally unique--nobody really is--but they've certainly cultivated a distinctive sound. The downfall with this is that sometimes it hampers your creativity because you need to maintain Your Sound. I sort of feel this way with Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I like what they're doing, but it all blends together after a while.

Anyway, I've really come to enjoy Elvis recently. His early work with Sun is fantastic, I was never aware that Elvis had that kind of vocal range in his day.

Early 90s-Mercury Rev and pre-2000 Modest Mouse. I don't feel like discussing the merits of this band, but c'mon, those are obvious reference points to anyone who's heard those bands.

Hmmm...I can see early Modest Mouse, but I hadn't considered Mercury Rev. I can also see influences of the Talking Heads, Roxy Music and others, but I wouldn't say they're exactly ripping off any of those influences any more than the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs are ripping off their numerous influences. At least when I listen to the Arcade Fire, my "poseur" alarm doesn't go off, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way, I still enjoy them and also see no point in discussing their merits. Musical discussion in this place is like walking across a minefield.

It's not really a minefield as long you just let the punches roll off you. The Arcade Fire hooked me on first listen, and they're extremely impressive live, even if a lot of their theatrics aren't at all spontaneous. I like 'em quite a bit.

Ah well, maybe I just need to get about 5500 more posts before I voice an opinion. Yeah, the Arcade Fire are great live. Supposedly their new album that they're recording now includes a church organ that induces tears upon listening. The producer of said forthcoming CD has already declared it a masterpiece. I can't wait.

the arcade fire were almost too perfect live. there was no spontanaity. no rawness. no fuck ups. it was like watching the cd live. wolf parade, who i saw with the arcade fire, were like a speeidng locomotive. carefree, fast, raw, and waiting to crash at any time. it maintained the orignal structures yet allowed for improvisation - which could ultimately be a success or a fuck up. but its the danger of it that made the live show exciting.

Yeah, the three times I've seen the Arcade Fire there seemed like there were certain parts of their stage show that were somewhat pre-planned out, but all three times I've seen them they seemed super-energetic and passionate without seeming fake or insincere.

 

Still TV on the Radio are the best live band I've ever seen. Those guys don't give out an ounce of rehearsed passion or exuberance.

I was at a party last weekend, maybe 35-40 people, and the host ran out of music, so he just put on the Wolf Parade album. It went over surprisingly well. This was right after listening to the entirety of Doggystyle.

there are a few dead periods in the album. like a song or two which prevents it from being nearly immaculate. but really, its phenomenal. it makes me want to punch a hole in the roof of my room when i dance.

ya i have. its quite downbeat. which in itself, is fine. but nowhere near as fun as apologies. i like everything that combo of frog eyes, destroyer, and wolf parade do. and all their subsidiaries.

Yeah. If you take the 7-8 songs I love on there and add them to the 3, maybe 4 tracks I really dig off the Clap Your Hands Say Yeah album, you'd get the ultimate 2005 mega-hyped indie album of all time.

Hmmm...I haven't listened to CYHSY since it first came out. I remember liking it mostly, but finding it to get annoying after awhile. It was kinda all over the place and spastic, which sometimes is good, but can get a little tiresome. In orther news, I'm excited to see Wolf Parade at Austin City Limits this Sept. I think they're going on right after Gnarls Barkley, so it should be a good 2 hours of exploding mayhem.
