EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 Let me state again that the Home Run Derby has gotten too long. I've been to many baseball games this season that didn't last as long.

Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 They really need to shorten this. 3 hours+ for a glorified batting pratice? It has lost all the luster it once had. Maybe cut down from 8 to 4.

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 Francisco Liriano's going to the All-Star Game after all, replacing Jose Contreras. Good for him, he certainly deserved it.

Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 The Yanks need to trade for a bat or a pitcher and they shouldn't give up Wang, Melky, Cano or Hughes to get it. And what sort of impact player are they going to get without giving up those players? I can tell you right now, any trade they try to make this year is going to start with Hughes + another player. tominator89 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 With the trade deadline approaching, the Phillies need to become sellers. I'm sure Gillick knows what he has and should start building for next year. We could trade Aaron Rowand, Cory Lidle and David Dellucci, and it might even make the team better in the short term as well. I'm not saying Rowand's bad, but there's little drop between him and Shane Victorino, and we can shore up another spot. I don't see Rowand getting traded. He's one of the few Phillies players that the fans actually respect for playing hard. Plus, it took Jim Thome to bring him here. Granted, Thome was on the way out anyway, but I still think it would be bad to move him. What about Burrell or Abreu? Also, who do you think is not returning next year? Bell? Lieberthal? the pinjockey 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 I agree with you in that I don't see Rowand getting traded, pretty much for the PR + "attitude" (every rumor seems to be that they want to bring in more Rowand type players). But if Gillick doesn't at least explore the option he is a fool. If Chicago wants him back badly, as rumored, and the Phils can get Josh Fields for him it needs to happen (even if they have to throw back a lesser prospect, of which the Phils have many). They are not a team that can afford to eliminate any option. Fans will respond to a winning team. A Rowand/Utley/Howard led team that goes nowhere for 5 years if they botch this transition season will end up treated no different than the Burrell/Abreu/Lieberthal core (losers, infecting next generation blah blah blah). Playing hard or not.
strummer 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 Rowand already has the "intangible" tag from the national media. Last week Chris Russo said he was better than Burrell and Abreu because "he knew how to win" There will be an outcry if he's traded.
Cheech Tremendous 0 Report post Posted July 11, 2006 Philadelphia needs to find a General Manager like Theo Epstein. Theo's stance has always been to generally ignore what the fans and media will think because in the end they will support a team that wins. Trading Abreu or Burrell for pennies on the dollar because they have some sort of perception as not being winners won't get them closer to a championship than they are right now. A foundation of Abreu, Utley, Howard, Rollins, Hamels, etc. should be enough to compete in the NL for the next couple of seasons. The goal of any deal from here on out should be to upgrade the pitching and finding a decent manager, not looking for "gritty" guys.

But, it all comes down to the ownership. If they wanted a GM who was a mover and shaker then they would have hired one.

Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2006 There's no reason for something dumb as a dorky kid swinging off a tee aiming for a target to take national airtime. Especially when rain is on the horizon. It'll take 12 minutes intro the teams, then 5 minutes for the anthem performed mildly by some random pop act and it'll be about 8:54 after some pointless banter before the first pitch is thrown. KingPK 0 Report post Posted July 12, 2006 I know. You'd think they'll be enthralled as these two teams of super athletes give 110% on the field, fighting for every run for the honor of their league and the fact that three or four of them will earn home field advantage for the World Series with a win. I'm guessing Rescue Me will be on by the time the 4th rolls around. Heh, FOX blew off the Canadian anthem, I'm assuming?
