Why would the Dodgers want Maddux? He's been terrible.

There's that whole "veteran presence" idea that some teams just lap up like no other. Then there's the case that he's pitching poorly because he's playing for a terrible team. Maddux isn't the kind to phone it in, so I'm not sure I buy into that theory.

Cubs haven't even scored 400 runs this season. Not as if it's a surprise the way they get shut out every day, but worth noting nonetheless.

Derrek Lee is back on the DL.

Pitchers park. Not just that, but they need to do SOMETHING to get Billingsley out of the rotation.

Yeah, Billingsly has been a bust thus far in the majors.

His fastball is good, but he throws it down the middle every few batters. That's about it.

Although Atlanta leads 2-1 at the moment, which probably won't last anyway, Cole Hamels has struck out 10 Braves through 4 innings, including the last 6 he's faced and he's struck out the side every inning except the 2nd. I know facing Atlanta automatically enhances your strikeout rate, but damn he's a beast.

Trachsel's line on the evening...

4.2 IP, 10 H, 8 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3 HR

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this doesn't strengthen Minaya's position at the ol' trading block.

Lee going back on the DL probably secures Dusty's job for the rest of the season and could solidify Hendry's case to extend him.

I used to think Bowa was the problem with the Phillies. Then he got canned, Charlie Manuel took over and nothing changed. Dusty Baker is a problem, but he's not the reason the Cubs are bad. Quite simply, they have not constructed a Major League caliber lineup. Ronny Cedeno's batting average fueled career year fooled everyone into thinking he was a real prospect. The hitting's undisciplined, and there's no impact hitter besides Derrek Lee, who's been injured. A manager can only take you so far. Earl Weaver couldn't make decent hitters of this bunch.

I've never thought Baker was the sole problem. But things have not worked out with him. Even when they had a good lineup, the team still underachieved. Hendry is to blame for constructing the team, but Baker is to blame for making Neifi Perez a regular. Baker and his crew are also to blame for not stressing the importance of quality at-bats. We know hitters develop their plate discipline early in their careers, but we also know Dusty's stance on walks.

To me, Cedeno was probably the most overrated member of the team. He's never had plate discipline, which means a few bad breaks are going to 180 his offensive numbers. He has no business batting second and if there were any better options, he'd have no business being the starting shortstop.

I'd love Maddux in Toronto(eventhough it won't happen). He's been bad but our rotation is in shambles after Halladay with Burnett, Lilly and Janssen being inconsistent and the #5 spot having a different guy every week. Probably wouldn't take too much to get him either.

Lilly's been pitching well for quite a while, and Burnett is looking pretty good. Maddux would be a good #4 starter, though, since I don't trust Chacin all that much, even before he got injured.

Failing that, Marcum looks like he has enough to be a #5 starter for the rest of the year.

I've heard that Derrek Lee may have some sort of post-traumatic arthritis and will never be the same again. Splendid.

It looks like Berkman might be injured. After straining his groin on Sunday, it was said that he would probably be ok to play 1st base tonite, but he's not in the lineup. If he's injured and the rumors about the Astros nixing the proposed Tejada deal, the Astros might only win the Wildcard by two games...

Dear Lord, this game won't fucking END already. I think Orscillo and Remy have finally snapped.

Oh, and I saw this linked on Fark. I've listened to a couple of Yankee radio games this year and I can understand why Charley Steiner ran screaming to the West Coast.

Anyone see DHL's Hometown Heroes contest? Tim Raines isn't even on the Washington Nationals ballot. He's their franchise player, and it's not close.

I noted that as soon as the list was released. Raines, Andre Dawson and Tim Wallach (plus Gary Carter, who made the list) were the faces of the franchise in the early-mid 80s. As an Expos fan, I was insulted.
