2006 MLB Trade Deadline Thread

Recommended Posts

Nice spin on the Cormier trade by the Phillies site...

Germano was ranked by Baseball America as San Diego's seventh-best prospect prior to the 2005 season. He was dealt to the Reds later that season.

...where he was ranked 21st in the Cincinnati organization prior to the 2006 season, also by Baseball America.

Just to add to this, my local AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons are up a game in their division. In the last 48 hours we have lost SS Danny Sandoval, OF Michael Bourn, SP Scott Mathieson and RP Brian Sanches. That's our shortstop, center fielder, ace and closer.

That's going to be a depressing place tomorrow night.

I'd be really interested in learning about the Phillies trades that did not happen thus far. I mean, the "prospects" offered must have been Little Leaguers for Gillick to have turned them down.

Cardinals traded Hector Luna to Cleveland for Ronnie Belliard. Good deal, especially if they can re-sign him.

This was mentioned here.

I don't really understand this trade by Cleveland, unless it's nothing but a cost-cutting measure. Luna is basically a utility guy, with the same average and OBP as Belliard... but much less power.

If St. Louis gets Belliard without giving up Luna, then I would probably have liked this deal. As it is, it's not really a good move for the Cardinals. Luna's not an All-Star in the making or anything, but he does have value as a utility player that the club had control over for the next few years. Belliard is probably an upgrade over Luna at the position (perhaps for no other reason than the fact that he pushes Miles out of the lineup forever), but he's not an upgrade in value, as he's due over $3 million this year with a $4 million club option for next year. It will be interesting to see if Belliard's patience at the plate improves (only 3.4 pitches per plate appearance), as the Cardinals typically put a lot of focus on stretching out at-bats.

My mental picture of Drayton McLane is a guy in a white suit and a bolo tie with a cowboy hat, who likes to shoot guns in the air when he gets excited. This is pretty much my mental picture of any Texan who makes more than $200,000 a year, though, so whatever.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the owner of the Astros has ordered Lidge to be traded. I've never seen a guy fall out of favor so quickly.

The rumour is Lidge for Blalock and then Ensberg and Everett to San Diego for Khalil Greene and Scott Linebrink

That's not bad for Houston, but I don't see how it really improves their team

man all the espn people are so praising the yanks for the abreu trade. I dont want to jinx it.

Getting a possible 4th starter in the deal has more appeal than a lf personally. But Ill wait to see before I make judgment.

actually those crack staffers at espn think sheff will move to 1b, thats rather out there.

But you cant even count on matsui or sheff cuz even if they come back theyll be way behind.

Surprised to see Chris Shelton demoted to make room for Sean Casey. Remember how well he started the season?

Is that for real? Wow, that's dumb.

Oh yeah, Lidge isn't going to get them much. By much, I mean Lidge won't get them much by himself.

Drayton's alot less rootin' and tootin' than you imagine, so just picture him as the crazy Texan from the Simpsons:

But yeah, according to Richard Justice, Mclane's ordered Lidge to be traded. The suggested deal that lands us Blalock, Greene, and Linebrink would work for me. I think in the long run, Lidge'll be fine. He just needs an offseason to work on his pitches and he's so deep in a funk right now that he needs something to help get him out of it. I wasn't at the game yesterday, but I heard that after he gave up the go ahed homerun in the 9th, they had some fans in the stands with a Lidge jersey that actually set fire to it while Lidge was walking towards the dugout. Things are getting bad.

I wouldn't be surprised to see that trade happen. I'm just happy that apparently the Oswalt for Brian Bannister/Victor Diaz/Heath Bell/various other Mets shlubs is false. I can't see the Astros trading Oswalt for anybody, even if we are sellers. I'm gonna cry if Oswalt ever leaves. I love Roy.

The Casey trade baffles me as well... that's not much of an upgrade at 1B, even with Shelton coming back to earth. The only plus is that he's a lefty bat, which Detroit has few of.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the possibility that Roger Clemens may have had a hand in the order to trade Lidge, since he did blow yet another Clemens lead in the ninth last night. Sure, it's speculation, but it seems all too plausible, especially when you consider all of the concessions that the Astros give to Clemens anyway.

They're going to get rid of their young closer because a guy who's only pitching for them for three months told them to? Not likely.

Atlanta and Boston are talking about Andruw Jones for Coco Crisp, Craig Hansen and another prospect.

I don't think that Scheurholz is that stupid

i don't know if i understand the importance of getting another 1st baseman.

I'm not sure I would consider Sean Casey to be a first baseman anyway.

the detoit folk are saying casey is an offensive upgrade, so i am sure thats where they're going to put him. him and dimitri young are interchangable at 1b & dh. luckily they didn't give much away for him. another trade in tigerland that has been discussed is roman colon for ray king. i understand the need for another lefty in the bullpen, but i always thought colon is valuable for the tigers as a spot starter. granted with maroth coming back, they'll have 6 proven starters on the staff.

also, the tigers are still not out of the soriano talks. i hope the tigers don't trade cameron maybin. that would be a huge mistake. maybe shelton is trade bait for another deal in the next two hours. you never know. but i think i think the tigers could be unstoppable if the got soriano & pout him at second base. they'd have the deepest batting line-up in the league. on top fo arguably the most consistant & strongest 5 man rotation. i know people think the yanks have the best line-up, but there are too many variables including injuries, age, and streakiness that comes in to play.

Yeah, I was really disappointed to find out that Lastings Milledge was just a black kid. I wanted a young Rollie Fingers.

Lidge is 29

I don't know what Houston should do with him. A year ago he was considered one of the top 3 or 4 closers in the game, and now he's just a mess. His strikeout rate is still excellent, but walks are up, longballs are up, so it seems to be just a confidence/control issue rather than a loss of stuff. Getting owned by the Cardinals last year seems to have really messed him up. Maybe he just needs a change of scenery and the 'Stros should trade him while he still has value, I don't know. Replacing him with Linebrink wouldn't be horrible. He's not as good as peak Lidge but he's the same age and has been very consistent the last couple years, and he doesn't have all this baggage that Lidge is bringing with him.

It was supposedly Crisp, Hansen and Lester for Jones, Boston shot it down. Do you really think that's a bad deal for Atlanta?

Fuck yeah that's a bad deal for Atlanta.

Oh, and since I'm lurking the ESPN chat...the A's aren't getting Soriano. There's only a 5% chance that Tejada gets moved at all.

Two of Boston's top pitching prospects and a solid young OF is a bad deal? People think Lester is a future ace and Hansen will be a top of the line closer. Atlanta's biggest problem is pitching and they're not winning anything until they fix that. I would take the deal if I was Boston because Manny-Ortiz-Jones would be SICK, but I'm not surprised that they didn't, Lester and Hansen are basically untouchable.
