Joe Lieberman voted out of party, running as an Independent

Recommended Posts

This is making much bigger headlines here in CT, but it's also a huge story nationally. Joe Lieberman lost the primary election yesterday to Ned Lamont, and is going to instead run as an independent. This is insanity if you ask me. With Republican approval dwindling all over the place, the Dems response to capitalize is to just move even further to the left, and cut off anyone in their party that might have a dissenting opinion? I may not agree with everything Lieberman has ever done, but he's a good man, and he's one of the few senators left that doesn't always stick to the party line. The big winner here could very well be the GOP, if Alan Schlesinger, the Republican running for the Senate in CT, can run a strong campaign, and the Dems get too bogged down squabbling with Lieberman and cause their vote to get split, our second Senate seat in CT could very well have an R next to it come November.

I don't think backing candidates that a growing number of Americans agree with is going to lose them any votes. That's not the "far left". That's people who don't like Bush's policies (i.e. the majority of Americans).

Yeah, well look how well the "I'm not George Bush" platform worked for Al Gore and John Kerry.

I would say that Ned Lamont isn't running an 'Im not George Bush' campaign, nor did Al Gore...and that Lamont is with the majority of Americans...and etc...but spman is a braindead twit so I wont even bother.

Ned Lamont is the end of civilization as we know it! I see him fucking children and playing Daddy Yankee cds!

"Alf, you ate the cat again, didn't you?"

Come on, Lieberman looks just like the dad from Alf.

Lamonts campaign against Lieberman wasn't even about the issues, it was just a smear campaign claiming that he wasn't liberal enough. Maybe I'll eat my words, maybe come November the American People will decide what they want is change and will vote the Dems in, we'll see, but the GOP hasn't lost in 12 years, and I don't think they're going to start now.

You're right, because I just saw on TV that the President's job approval rating is 51%. Now I'm going down to the movie theater and see "Shrek 2," and then when I get home I'm going to watch the newest episode of "Arrested Development" on Fox.

Oh, that's right! I forgot its not 2004 anymore!

Lieberman had to know going into the midterm elections, that the War was going to be the biggest issue out there. We are what, four years into this war, and it seems like things are getting worse, if not more secretive with every passing day. There still doesn't seem to be a clear plan on how to get the troops out of there, or a clear objective as to what "Victory" means.

Knowing all of this, Lieberman still chooses to support the GOP's majority view on this war and THAT is what cost him the primary.

Facts and reason are no substitute for calling people "far-left Defeat-ocrats", though.

Nothing is funnier than seeing the Ultra Socialist Whack Jobs take over the Democratic party.

Lieberman is actually one of the most liberal senators in the US. He's gottan a higher "liberal" score than Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer according to most think tanks.

Its a mistake to kick a guy that is actually likeable out of the party. It'd be hilarious if Lieberman/Lamont split the Dem vote, and the GOP candidate ends up winning the election.

Talk about stupid political moves.

Howard Dean is the best thing to happen to the GOP since Bill Clinton.

Kicking Lieberman out would be like the GOP kicking John McCain to the curb, bc McCain doesnt agree with everything that the conservative base does.

Dumb move dems.

Wait, so Lieberman being as liberal as he is by your own account is "actually a likeable guy out of the party" and he happens to be one of the most liberal of the party, yet the guy who beats him who in his ownright is probably just as liberal, with the simple difference coming down to the War in Iraq(Not to mention siding with Frist on Terry Schiavo) is now suddenly a "Ultra Socialist Whackjob"

Riiiiiight.

Face reality, people want the war to end and end fast, and people who support that notion are going to get voted in.

Calling "Lieberman" likable by anyone is a joke. He's a national loser as a VP and presidential hopeful, enjoys the censorship of harmless media, and has devolved into a parrot for the executive branch, which shouldn't be the role of any senator, democrat or republican. He might still win the senate race, but I doubt it. He's going to be the BUTT of every talkshow comedian's jokes for the next 3 months and if he doesn't roll with it, he's toast. Good riddance, doofus.

This is the wrong thinking.

Lieberman may be just as liberal as most of the far left, but the "perception" is that he's a moderate. Plus he's likeable, just like McCain is.

Winning a democratic primary, is different than winning an open election. To win a popular election, you need mainstream moderate support. Lieberman could get that. I dont think the ultra left moveon.org kooks will. In fact, I know they wont.

You may be able to win primaries, but you wont win the popular election. Popular elections are generally won by mainstream candidates with crossover appeal, not won by only the far left/right base.

Jerry Falwell isnt going to win any elections.

Neither are the MoveOn.org people.

Maybe you believe that MoveOn.org and Howard Dean represent mainstream America?

Well you can believe that.

It's not true of course.

In Lieberman's 'concession' speech after getting beat by Ned Lamont he babbled about how he would keep running because we 'need to send someone down to Washington to change things!' or something to that effect. The guy's been just another tool for 18 years, but NOW, hes ready to shake things up...and the first thing to go, is that misogynist Al Snow from the Sci-Fi channel!

Um, yeah...

John McCain's probably not the best example to use considering what the conservatives did to him in 2000. Also, saying the nomination of a successful telecommunication entrepenuer is a sign that the Democratic Party has been taken over by "Ultra Socialist Whack Jobs" probably isn't a good way to convince people you have the slightest idea of what you're talking about, either.

So what does this reply have to do with Ned Lamont? Was he personally handpicked by moveon.org? It honestly feels like conservatives have made moveon.org ten times as big as it ever was before they started mentioning it every night. Seriously, do THAT many people even care about moveon.org ?

Ned Lamont lactates in restaurants.

And he fingerfucks preteens while saying Timbaland was the best Beatle.

Oh that's just a diversion so that he can steal Yu-Gi-Oh cards.

Ribbing about that thread will never get old. I'm not being sarcastic.

You could make one of those refridgerator magnet sets of that initial post and always come up with something great.

Disclaimer: I'm a bit biased because I met Lieberman when the 2000 VP debate was at Centre College in my hometown. He's a nice guy and while I disagree with him on a lot of stuff I feel really bad for what happened to him yesterday.

I already commented on this race over in the election 2008 section so I won't go about repeating a lot of what I said here. However, this is DEFINITELY a two man race because the GOP candidate Schlesinger is only polling about 8-13% and had a ton of problems relating to a gambling debt. To suggest that the GOP has a chance in hell of winning this seat is crazy.

Dick Morris totally shitted all over Lamont today on the talk radio circuit. He said that Lamont was a client of his about a decade ago when he was running for the state senate in CT and the guy is a total flake and Lieberman will kick the crap out of him in a general election. He offered a decent rationale too: we all know now that Ned Lamont is against the war in Iraq BUT how does he feel about:

-domestic survelliance

-the Patriot Act

-the war in Afghanistan

-illegal immigration

-numerous social issues

Morris said these issues will define the race moreso now than the anti-war stance taken over by Lamont. Also, Lamont is basically a creature of the liberal blogs right now BECAUSE without them this race would not have turned out the way it did. I'm not saying that he did this by choice but face it without them we wouldn't even know who Ned Lamont is. What pisses me off in this case is why did MoveOn have to target Lieberman and not Hillary Clinton who also voted for the war? This "Clinton gets a free pass" thing really ticks me off.

I'll concede that Lamont's position on the war is supported by a majority of the public but I find a bit of hypocrisy in the Moveon.Org argument: we rushed into Iraq without a plan for the post-war country, right? So why in the hell should we leave the country being just as careless as we were when we rushed in? I agree that Iraq is terrible and we should find a way to go because it seems the people don't appreciate or presence or want us there. However, just because MoveOn.org's position on the war is supported by the public doesn't mean its other social/political agendas relate to the public too. Just keep that in mind.

I think it would be really funny if Lieberman won this race because how would his Democratic "friends" talk to him on Capitol Hill in the next session? Are Hillary, Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy, etc. going to come up and say "I was rooting for you all along Joe but you know I had to support that Lamont guy for the good of the party blah, blah, blah." I guess the old saying is right: when you get into a tight spot you really find out who your true friends are.

Also, for anyone to suggest here or somewhere else that the Lamont camp is not scared of Lieberman in a general election is insane. In fact, the Lamont camp is making a PR push to force Lieberman out of the race to "respect the opinion of the Democratic majority." However, Lieberman isn't giving this one up without a fight (and rightfully so since he lost 52-48) and I hope he pounds Lamont, wins the seat, and tells all of his Democratic colleagues and the MoveOn.org crowd to kiss his ass.
