The OAO 8/18 Smackdown! Thread

Last Man Standing

August 18, 2006

Last week on SmackDown, The Great Khali and Daivari tried their best to avoid Undertaker. Instead, Khali received a thunderous chokeslam and was ordered to face Undertaker in the Last Man Standing Match not at SummerSlam, but at SmackDown instead. This week, the monsters will meet in perhaps the most brutal match in SmackDown history.

As first reported on WWE.com, Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guererro will face off at SummerSlam. The bitter family feud escalated to another level last week, and Eddie Guerrero’s widow Vickie was involved again. The emotionally distraught Vickie found herself on the arena floor after being inadvertently knocked off her feet. What will Rey and Chavo have to say for themselves just two days from their big showdown?

Last week, we learned that King Booker will be defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Batista at SummerSlam. The Animal warmed up by teaming with Lashley and taking out Finlay and Regal in tag team action. Meanwhile, King Booker scouted from the announce position. Batista will be making a return to his hometown of Washington D.C. on Friday, what will he and King Booker do to prepare for their huge match just two days away from SummerSlam?

The United States Championship will be on the line when the rivalry between current Champ Finlay and the hard-hitting Lashley continues this Friday on SmackDown. Finlay has managed to hold on to the gold so far, but will his luck continue this Friday?

Just more than a week away from the biggest party of the summer, there are still many issues to be sorted out. What will happen as the road to SummerSlam comes to a close? Tune in for yourself, Friday night at 8/7 CT and only on UPN.

It just occured to me that Summerslam was in DC last year on the 21st, with Batista playing hometown hero and viciously destroying JBL in what amounted to a world championship squash on pay television.

Is it just a coincidence, or have they always spent mid-/late August around the DC area?

I'm looking forward to this show. I'm diggin' everything on SD right now, except for Booker most likely loosing the title soon.

If they could spend at least 15 minutes each week to establish some sort of tag division, then the show would be the best all around wrestling show in a long time.

A tag division with half a dozen teams would be great. Booker is probably going to lose the title but at least he held it in the first place.

I'm looking forward to the trainwreck that will be the LMS match.

More Finlay/Lashley is always good, though I expect a screwy finish. SD only has 2 SS matches, so I see the US title being defended. They'll probably go with the Finlay/Lashley/Regal 3-way that was supposed to happen last month.

L/K vs. Idol/Stevens looks like another likely matchup.

If Booker does loose the Championship this sunday, I'd say he's had a good one month reign as Champion. I didn't think they made him out to be a weak Champion at any point during his reign and it looked like he was having fun out there. It would be probably be a forgetable reign, but a good one nonetheless.

And if Batista does win, I wouldn't mind him as Champion again. I really like the guy, hes real over with the fans, his promos are decent and straight to the point at times, and hes not to over the top like Cena or Orton. and he might not be a great wrestler by I always enjoy his matches.

I can't see Booker losing the belt to Batista at SS. It seems like he just won it, and let's be honest about Batista....the guy hasn't been all that over since his return. It's kind of like once Mark Henry got hurt it deflated the crowd for Batista, and he struggled somewhat in a feud with a guy who has also lost momentum in Ken Kennedy. Then there's the whole embarrassing outing on ECW. In short there's really no good reason to put the belt on Batista at the moment. If so, where do they go with it? Aside from Booker getting a rematch there's really nothing much in the way of challengers for Batista.

Batista was over as hell when he first came back. Especially his excellent beatdown on Mark Henry, which featured some of the best step shots I've seen.

Like you said, after Henry got injured, people felt let down that they didn't get to see Batista get his revenge.

Which makes me think he'll be getting the belt at SS even more, so he can get his heat back. That's the two things in his program when he came back: Take out Henry, and win back the title he never lost.

Now they'll rush the title change, which I hate because Booker is fucking awesome right now.

As far as challengers, Taker will be open since Khali is gone. Benoit is returning soon, I'm sure they can squeeze a one month fued for the belt out of Kennedy. Maybe give Lashley a shot, put him over big, but at the end he's just not ready yet. And if Batista keeps it for a long reign, then maybe somebody who isn't even on SD right now.

I think this short build up doesn't lend itself to a Batista win. Yeah, Booker-Rey had a short build, but hell Rey had the title for 3 and half months at that point and the writing was on the wall especially with the Chavo turn more than obvious.

Plus with Cena looking more and more likely to win (in his hometown no less) a Booker win, maybe via Kennedy, is hardly out of the question. If anything I can see them holding off hotshotting the title till the CW premiere if just to build up immediate new interest.

There were no plans as of yesterday (Sunday) to have any of these matches on SummerSlam: Highlanders .VS. Spirit Squad, London & Kendrick .VS. James & Stevens, Finlay .VS. Lashley .VS. Regal (or any U.S. Title match) or Nitro .VS. Kane.

Tatanka has been pinned two weeks in a row because of refs not seeing his opponent pulling his tights and has been pissed off after both matches. Maybe a heel turn is on the cards?

don't forget cabbage, just this year, Edge went PPV to next PPV only as the champ and that was just a span of 3 weeks...we've seen what this company is capable of.

Yeah but I think they even know that the whole Edge deal was a dumbshit move. Besides there were other factors like HHH and WM to consider there....where is there to go on SD?

I'm not too excited about the idea of a Tatanka heel turn. Maybe it's because I recall his SS 1994 heel turn on Lex Luger. It pretty much killed his career.

Another good Smackdown. Tatanka/Kennedy was decent. Finlay/Lashley had another good match. Taker/Khali was ok. The only downer was the Vito crap.

a good show overall.

Last week he lost when the ref didn't see his foot under the ropes, not because of pulled tights.

You're right, my bad.

Is it wrong that I hate how WWE plays it so safe with certain moves like that finisher?

-MVP - If that guy doesn't have a damn good match his first time out, it could flat out kill his push. From what I hear he's not that great of a worker anyway.
