Boxing Thread

Looks like I'll finally be seeing a live boxing card later this summer.

Erik Morales vs. David Diaz will headline an Aug 4th ppv card in Chicago with Ricardo Torres-Kendall Holt, JCC Jr, Donovan George, and Michael Walker on the undercard so far. I will already be in town for Lollapalooza and I'll gladly leave Saturday's music early to attend this. Erik is one of my favorite fighters ever & this is probably as good a chance as he can possibly get for one more world title.

Morales is going to win that belt. I don't think he's done, persay, but he needed to stay away from Pacquiao. That's a good card too, I'm going to order it.

I think it bears mentioning (and this is my opinion, no facts or anything) that Jermain Taylor is totally going to duck Kelly Pavlik.

And considering that he's said before that all he cares about is the money, I'm sure that he won't fight Pavlik.

Arum will get the money by putting the fight in a big arena in Ohio. Of course, he could come up with 10 million for Taylor and Jermain would in turn price himself out at 15.

I'm expecting Taylor to go up in weight just to avoid fighting Pavlik.

If he fights Pavlik like he fought Spinks last night, the fight won't go past three rounds.

My god was Taylor/Spinks awful........I hope Pavlik either beats Taylor or brings this "beast" out of him we keep hearing about....!?!

Taylor will probably try to take the Calzaghe fight this time( because: a bitch smacking>getting completely crushed), assuming Joe still wants it which is highly doubtful at this point. I knew Pavlik was dangerous but I didn't expect him to dominate Miranda that brutally. Truth be told, Miranda probably would have knocked out Taylor if they fought and it would be scary to see what would happen if he faced Pavlik like that.

Quote of the night:

"This is the boxing equivalent of flag football."

Damn....I know Cotto is a rising star and all, but does Zab Judah still even have enough in the tank to warrant being the Main Event on PPV?

Since I feel the need to state this, since I was utterly shocked at reading this news...

Mickey Ward is Arturo Gatti's new trainer. Yeah, and he's fighting on July 14th on HBO.

And it's a fight Gatti can win as well, vs. Alphonso Gomez. Should be fun.

Cotto-Judah will be good. Of course Judah has something left. His fight with PBF wasn't exactly a blowout or anything. I think they could even trade knockdowns but Cotto should win by late stoppage or clear decision.

Because the Boxing thread needs a bump:

Kessler and Calzaghe look to be coming close to a deal for the fall. This should be a really interesting fight with Kessler possibly having the youth, power, and skill to cause Joe some serious problems though I'm not certain he's quick enough.

And Briggs has apparently been bested in another shit fight where he lurched around and ate punches. Why was that fight a PPV? Horrible. Sultan will at least make a better Champion with more options for interesting fights and possible unification.

Anyone else see the fight tonight?

Judah vs Cotto.

Cotto hit him twice below the belt and head butted Judah. Judah also head butted Cotto. Overall, the fight was amazing. Cotto was fuckin up Judah late. Judah was gettin beaten so badly, he had to take a knee for a standing 8 count. In the 11th round he was knocked down after a succession of a uppercut a left and a right. After he got up he kept getting hit and the ref had to stop the fight. Cotto wins by TKO in the 11th.

I missed it because I went to two soccer games today and spent too much money. I heard it was a classic, but I need to catch the replay.

Ya, you definitely need to catch the replay. I'll see if i can find it anywhere online.

I will hopefully catch Zab/Cotto on the cable replay. By most accounts, it was an exciting fight.

In other news, a sluggish Tarver was essentially outworked by much smaller hand picked opposition during a bland fight, got a gift majority decision and spent the entire post fight crying and whining while he was booed out of the building. Yeah, this makes me want to see Dawson/Tarver.....The nuthugging showtime announcers kept trying to play it off like it was Robinson/LaMotta or something with Tarver dominating a relentless tough guy, please. Tarver ate some nasty body shots, got backed up repeatedly, ran for most of the fight, and his "exciting" flurries rarely landed anything of note. The slow motion replay of Tarver's "power shots" was hiliarious with most of the punches clearly zipping over the guy's head or being blocked.

Hatton v. Castillo tonight. I made a friendly wager with a friend and took Castillo. I don't think he's going to win though, it was one of those "get bragging rights for making a crazy pick" things.

Hatton may well be my favorite fighter right now. I'd love to see him win that.

George Foreman vs. Ron Lyle-Las Vegas, 1976.

One of the greatest fights that's completely forgotten. This is everything that is great and wonderful about heavyweight boxing, back when heavyweight boxing was the best thing ever. Both guys give and take shots that would kill lesser men. They actually start boxing, but simultaneously say "Fuck this shit!" and destroy each other. Absolutely brutal.

Good to see Hatton win, I don't think anyone saw that body shot coming. Hopefully, it will finally set up a Hatton/Mayweather meeting.

Yeah, Foreman/Lye is my favorite heavyweight fight ever; and it's a shame it doesn't get more attention. Simply unreal with both guys clubbing away while being out on their feet. Frazier/Quarry I is another great forgotten brawl from the 70s.

" back when heavyweight boxing was the best thing ever."

Eh, I think heavyweight boxing is better now than it's been in some time.

So Holyfield's tomato can diet continues with talks of a title shot now. Did anyone see the fight? People are saying he was looking sharp, but I wander if he's even ready for Larry Donald or burned out Byrd again. He'll probably get a title shot because of his name vaule but I can't see him beating any of the current champs. He has a slim tough vet's chance against Sultan, White Tyson and Oleg but I cringe at the thought of him stepping in the ring with someone like Wlad or even Peter.

I think a smarter, better conditioned Wlad doesn't drink from strange water bottles and crushes Brewster in the middle rounds. Hopefully it's quick and painless without Brewster absording yet another monster beating that will threaten his career.

For what it's worth, the Holyfield fight is airing Saturday on ESPN Classic for some reason.

Is Butterbean still fighting? Sadly, I bet Holyfield-Butterbean would be the most bought heavyweight boxing pay per view since Tyson-Lewis. Would certainly be more of a draw than Holyfield Vs any of the current champs.

Which would set up the money fight the world has been waiting for Holyfield/Tyson III.

There is some serious buzz over this Holyfield fight for some reason, though it sounds to me like it was just a case of him struggling to put away a burn out that never was and a ton of bullshit hype. Other boards have clowns talking about Holyfield reuniting the titles but the man seriously hasn't beat anyone noteworthy since he headbutted Rahman years ago, and the current champs and challengers are actually quite good with Valuev and Briggs out of the picture(who I'm not even sure Holyfield could beat at this point which is just plain sad).

...Oh, Jesus tittyfuckin' Christ.

That being said, Brewster looks to be beyond done, so Wlad should take this easily.

Do please grow a sense of humor, the irony of setting up that statement with "smarter, better conditioned" couldn't be more apparent. My actual thoughts on the fight and the drug theory are stated earlier in the thread, but I know you just couldn't resist putting another ignorant "Wlad nuthugger" in his place, so please continue jumping the gun and chasing phantoms for my amusement at the very least. Glad to see it was tiresome Wlad hate and not love for boxing that got you to finally post in the boxing thread. Bravo.

BTW, Wlad was visibly fatigued and lethargic before he started eating shots and Brewster made a go at it. The question is whether it was from teeing off on Brewster so much in the early rounds, being poorly prepared or yes, possibly drugged or having an ill advised rub down that caused Wlad to get so gassed not if it was phantom punches. As I said before, the simplest explanation is the best; he was poorly prepared and shot his load too soon, burned out, Brewster survived and made a run. This isn't exactly a new problem for some Emanuel trained fighters, Thomas Hearns says hello.

Considering you've actually mentioned this fight as being interesting and/or competitive has thrown any proper context for your comments out of the window. Besides, you still offer drugging as a possible reason for Wladimir's complete meltdown, which is ridiculous as aside from low blood sugar levels, no evidence or motive for a possible drugging was never found.

"Considering you've actually mentioned this fight as being interesting and/or competitive has thrown any proper context for your comments out of the window."

So your intentionally misquoting me to prove a point nobody is arguing? And when you think you've read it all....

Well that explains this gem or why I shouldn't ask why crushing=competitive in your vocab or why your wasting your time struggling to argue about a fight you don't find interesting. Well, thanks for wasting my time and anybody else who's had the dumb luck of reading this pointless shit, and thank god for the ignore function.

If you have to turn on the ignore function for someone that you admittedly run into once every few months, then you should probably stop watching boxing and start participating in order to grow some balls. Considering that you edited your posts multiple times in order to rebut what he said, I'd say you do care about what he thinks, contrary to your desire to ignore him. Anyway, it's only the internet. Please don't get into some lengthy diatribe with me, I don't want to hear it. I don't need to turn on the ignore function to either, I will just scroll down, unless you have something relevant to say about:

Jack Dempsey. Does anyone here knowledgable enough about old school, like reallllly old school boxing have much info on him? I have been reading this book he wrote called Championship Fighting, and it's fairly interesting as I've been working on improving my power and footwork, but would anyone know if it's a worthy guide? Is his opinion worth hearing? A lot of pro fighters have turned out to be pretty bad teachers, but this book seems pretty legitimate. If you have nothing to say about the book, what about the man himself? I always respect guys with lots of heart which he had, and considering the size difference he gave up in some of his fights, I must say the fact that he was as dominant as he was is fairly impressive.
