TWiB 8/21 - 8/27

Recommended Posts

That 8-0 comeback ties an Oakland club record for their biggest comeback. 12-10 the final.

Dan Haren becomes the 2nd pitcher in modern baseball history to win a game after giving up eight runs in the first two innings. Not really a record you want to be a part of.

It's a good thing I was raised a New Orleans Saints fan, and, thus, am used to dissapointment. Otherwise, I'd be crying in my Arizona Sweet Tea. I wish if the 'Stros were gonna bomb, they'd do it with reckless abandon and take the route of the Cubs and do dumb things like play Freddy Bynum at 2nd.

In case Rowand goes on the DL, Michael Bourn is committed to Team USA through September 5th. The only outfielder left on the 40 man roster is Josh Kroeger, and he is AWFUL. The Phils have two open slots on the 40 man though, so they could feasibly add Pedro Swann for a couple of weeks.

And they really need to DL Tom Gordon. At this point, they can arrange it retroactively so they'd only lose him for another six days.

Guest Felonies!
screw him, I hope he forgets where he's playing tonight when he tries to pull another drama-queen stunt in center and runs face-first into a brick wall.

Well, I guess I was kinda close.

Games like this emphasize the need for walks on the offensive side and solid defense. Cedeno doesn't blunder, the Cubs walk a little bit (maybe even ONCE) and the game could've swung the other way.

Well it's football season now, so at least the Astros got us through the summer before they pissed the season away totally.

Two bits of Mets news this morning...

This turned out about as well as it could have. Best case scenario is that Glavine starts next week, but I don't even mind if they put him on the 15 day DL retroactively and give Bannister or Perez a chance in the meantime.

Even though Green's having kind of a mediocre season, I think it would be a much better idea to start him and use Milledge as a fourth outfielder should the trade happen. I might be overly optimistic, but I think a change of scenery would do Green some good, especially when it says right in that story that he hasn't been too happy in Arizona recently. What I'm concerned about is what the Mets would have to give up for him; outside of a few pitchers and a couple position players low in the system, there aren't a whole heck of a lot of prospects for Minaya to barter with.

Hope the Yanks can refocus following the long weekend, but it was worth it as a fan. Notwithstanding its always fun when they win the rivalry games, but its more satisfying getting a good lead in the division. Keep it that way guys.

Whats up with the Lilly/Gibbons thing? crazy stuff

Rowand is out for 4-6 weeks.

I think he should demand a trade before he's killed playing the outfield for the Phils.

I wouldn't be too upset if he got traded. Granted, he's become a hard-working hero in the eyes of the fans, but he's really only a .260 hitter. I don't see the team trading him, as it would be a PR nightmare, but I'm not worried about Victorino playing CF for the remainder of the season. What does worry me is that the Phils desperately need some guys off the bench.

I was hoping to find Victorino's throw, but there's no video archive of it that I can find. It was a BETTER defensive play than Burrell's sliding catch, which made Sportscenter's top ten.

Joe Thurston gets the call to the bigs, and the club will likely make another call-up. Victorino's a fine replacement in center field, no worries there. The problem is that Thurston is now the best bench bat on the team. They're still very, very weak on the bench.

Caesar Izturis goes to the DL. I'd be interested to see if this means Ronny Cedeno is moved back to short for now. You'd imagine this would mean more at-bats for Theriot, but I suspect we could see Cedeno at short and Bynum at second for the most part.

Pretty excited about this Mets and Cardinals series. I'm also cautiously optimistic, since Jeff Weaver has been surprisingly pretty good his last few starts, Mulder is apparently coming back, and the Mets have some injuries/slumps going on right now.

Phillies acquire Jose Hernandez from the Pirates.

Wow. Rowand gets injured and the team gets better.

Only question now is who gets sent down. The Phils recalled Michael Bourn along with Joe Thurston today. Someone will need to go right back to make room.

A-Gon is heading to the DL and Dustin Pedroia's joining the big club for tonight's game. I've been waiting for this kid to come up all season.

Pujols just launched a 3 run missile to deep right. John Maine had retired 9 in a row before this inning. 5 pitches and 3 runs later the Mets trail 3-1. Bleh.

It amazes me Hernandez continues to stick around. He's always been the kind of hitter who'd give you maybe 15 homers, while striking out roughly 380 times a season.

And what better way to address a gap in the outfield by acquiring a career utility infielder.

Bruiser, your double-posting here and BTF gives me a strange feeling of deja vu.

Utley's out too, so we've got Sandoval in the lineup. Strange how many players from last year's sub .500 Red Barons squad are contributing this year. Sandoval, Victorino, Ryan Howard, Chris Coste.
