Recommended Posts

Since there was a post about the most underrated wrestlemania matches, I thought I would try summerslam. Here are a few that I think flew under the radar.

Buldogs vs Rougeous ss88

Big Bossman vs Mountie ss91

Savage vs Warrior ss92

Val Venis vs Dlo Brown ss98

I think Bossman vs Mountie just has to win on the delightful post match stipulations.

You mean situations. I still laugh whenever I think of the Mountie being thrown into a jail and the gay guy saying to him "Don't you like the way leather touches your body".

Val Venis vs D'Lo Brown is with out a doubt one of my favorite matches from Summerslam. That match is part of the reason why I am so disgusted with where Val Venis is on the card now.

I find quite a few of the tag matches from the early Summerslams, most notably Bulldogs/Rougeaus, Busters/Harts & Rougeaus&Martel/Rockers&Santana, to be a lot better than people give them credit for. The 6-Man from Summerslam 93 probably fits in here as well. It seems that Summerslam has a lot more underrated matches overall than Wrestlemania does.

Ultimate Warrior vs. Rick Rude for the IC Belt @ SummerSlam 1989 is one of my favorites. The match is a MILLION times better than their WrestleMania match and the crowd is hot for everything in it. Plus, who can ever forget Ventura's rant against Tony Schiavone after he justifies the Warrior hitting Rude with the IC title belt because its outside the ring. Paraphrased: "What do you mean Schiavone? You mean Warrior can SHOOT Rude outside of the ring and it would be legal? Your a bigger idiot than I thought!"

People forget SummerSlam 1989 a lot but it had some great wrestling. Two other great matches came out of that card:

*The Brain Busters vs. Hart Foundation opener

*The six man tag with Tito Santana & The Rockers vs. Rick Martel & The Rougeau Brothers

I also concur with a previous poster about the six man tag with Tatanka & The Smoking Gunns against Bam Bam Bigelow & The Headshrinkers at SummerSlam 1993. That triple flying headbutt spot was awesome even though it missed.

Hakushi vs 123 Kid is a great match not many people talk about.

It got bogarted in the middle of MableMania.

I'll give one that will probably get shunned (though I haven't seen it in a long while): Bushwhackers vs. Natural Disasters 1991 . . . IIRC, the Disasters were surprisingly stooging and bumping all over the place for the Bushwhackers and the match never dragged to a point where the crowd was disinterested.

I have a soft spot for Michaels vs Martel. Probably for Martel's facial expressions in the build-up, but still.

The main event in 1988 (Hogan/Savage vs Andre/Dibiase) is not bad at all.

I agree with this as well.

A very good exciting match. Hakushi was fantastic during his tenure with WWE. I loved his character

I totally agree. In my world I could see Val Venis as a main event player actually. He has or had that potential. Now he isnt even on tv anymore. Its really a shame. What he needs is to get out of WWE and do something else. I would love to see him as a gajin in NOAH for example.

Absolutely, This guy has always had the look, talent, and charisma to be a big time player. He has everything WWE looks for, but has never been given that big upper card push. I remember the push after he turned heel in 2000 I think where he wore those god awful plain white trunks with white boots. They screwed that up and put him in the RTC.

I actually though he could be a big time player in the "CHIEF MORELY" gimmick, but they screwed that up to.

I kinda like Razor/Diesel from SS 94, with Walter Payton in Ramon's corner. Fun match.

I also was amused by Bulldog/Shamrock from SS 97. Anyone else like this match?

As far as Val goes, he's always been somewhat of a bland in ring worker without many stand out spots. He's needed a new finisher for a long time, since the Money Shot is a frogsplash and there are other guys who do it better. But really, he's mostly a guy doomed forever by his Russo Era gimmick. The porn gimmick got him over initially but it also prevented him from being taken seriously as a main event threat.

I'll echo a few that were already mentioned before throwing some new ones out there.

Razor/Diesel is awesome. Shawn's interference makes that match.

Savage/Warrior. WM 7 deserves all the love it gets, but this match is almost as good from a technical standpoint. I love the storyline here... classic Flair, Perfect and Heenan. This is the best build to a face-face match I've ever seen. You just don't see storylines like this anymore.

Warrior/Rude. I agree with everything that was said about this earlier. Amazing pop for the Warrior. You could argue that this was the beginning of the height of his popularity (from here until WM 6).

Busters/Harts. One of my favorite tag matches ever. Totally non-formulaic and the whole non-title issue is great. Again, you don't see stuff like that anymore.

Kid/Hakushi. Solid match.

Others:

Steiners/Bodies. They cram a lot into 10 minutes. Really good match with some flashy double team stuff that wasn't exactly prevelant in the WWF at the time.

Bret/Doink and Bret/Lawler. This whole ordeal was amazing. Perfect storytelling.

Virgil/DiBiase. Virgil winning was really the only acceptable way to justify the feud but he was still viewed as a total jobber and the win was a shocker. Lots of dramatic stuff here with Piper on commentary, the false finish, Sherri's ejection, and the belt coming into play.

Honky/Warrior. Total squash obviously, but a classic moment.

Hogan/Quake. This is one of my favorite Hogan matches ever. Of course I don't like many, but still... The Hogan/big guy formula had been done to death by that point, but somehow Quake made it interesting. Cheap ending but better than the traditional Hogan leg drop finish.

X-Pac/Jarrett. Typical good *** wrestling.

Edge/Storm. Again, standard quality stuff.

Tajiri/Xpac 2001, not a classic, but some good stuff in a shortish match, with a cool turn around and misting of albert as he tried to interfere

I liked Goldust/Booker vs Storm/Christian from 2002 better than most other people I suppose. Would have been much better and more remembered perhaps if Bookdust had won the titles here.

Eddy/Edge was also very good with the cool moment of eddy frogsplashing the bad shoulder of edge (I know everyone complains Edge went on to separ him with th ebad shoulder, but at least he sold it afterward.

Austin/Mankind/HHH from 99 was a fun match IMO with a weird out of nowhere finish that really suprised everyone

Owen/Shamrock Lions Den from 98 was a solid match too IIRC
