Misery allows him to blame his condition for his horrible life. If he finds a girl and she doesn't care about his condition, then it proves his misery is a self inflicted wound and his whole life has been his own fault. Which is true but if he can keep the delusion of the other thing, it allows him to avoid the despair of reality.
